if you google somac linen you may find an American stockist, fishing shops may sell the stuff, also upholstery suppliers may have some the right size they use it to hold buttons on,

Good quality, 100% pure linen thread (without wax) is probably not available at your local craft store.  I have to buy mine online.....but I can't remember where I bought it last time.

Here's a link to thread that I know is NOT waxed:

If you don't mind using a thick, rustic looking linen thread or cord, you can get it locally.  Here's a link to a thread here on PA (excuse the pun ;D):

thanks you hepled me a lot! Though now I don'y know whether I should buy waxed linen or unwaxed. What is better? because if I coose waxed I can get the natural color unwaxed not :-\ So what should I use? ;D

If you use thread with wax on it, you won't be able to glue the thread down easily.  And the only arrow finish that works over wax is wax.

Both waxed and unwaxed threads will work for the fletching.  You should be able to get natural color for both types....but it might take a little more searching.

remember you can make good bow strings out of linen you may want to take that into consideration

Yeah Im not gonna glue em anyways. I use that method that Richard uses in one of his videos. I just finished a set of arrows using silk but that was not so authentic. Another question :-\(why cant I aks em all at once? :P) what is the most traditional color? Btw i think i'll stick with the Hollanders site.

Aye' they do  ;D
The thread in the link will work for whipping, personally i prefer a smaller gauge for my arrows but to each his own eh!?
If you take a look on Steve's website you'll see the silk i'm talking about,it's not expensive.
I allso use Gutterman's thread but not very traditional :)

Youngbowyer, I use silk thread to wrap fletching. I get it from 3Rivers(an advertiser) and it comes in 4 or 5 different colors. Silk is thin and strong.     Pat

There is evidense of silk thread being used as on the MR arrows and the westminster arrow.
However I have never seen any actual artifacts that show linen thread being used, if there is and I'm wrong then i apologise but would like to know where the artifacts can be seen

Cheers

Steve

I am not the smartest guy on that suff i would actually say I know nothing about evidence and stuff( that's why im buying secrets of the englishwarbow soon!:P) But Richard head uses it and Nick Birmingham uses it and I really like the look of it. and btw With linen you can get the nice natural color. I found a new site that sells it cheaper here's the link, http//www.wmboothdraper.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3_25&products_id=757 i will buy unbleached. So the last one in the pic. What do you use on your arrows Steve?

Some good thread on that site!
I'd go for the 35/2 size.

It's a sewing thread,100% Polyester i believe. It's strong enough for arrows and it fall's between the feather vane's very neatly i find,i hate gaps in fletching's!

I use pure silk thread on my "Livery Arrows" and nothing on my general shooting arrows.

Lol my last decision im gonna buy somac thread from richard head ;D :o :P shipping will only cost me $8

I also bought somac from Richard (being in canada it seemed extravagant) but the problem is it separates the feathers too much.

How long did it take for the thread to come. On richard's arrows and Nick Birmingham's arrows you don't seem to notice a lot. If you have any pictures left of those arrows, I would appreciate it if you could pm me and give me the pic.

Tom.

Give me a day and i'll send you some pictures of my arrows. I mean the thread doesn't seperate the feathers TOO much but it is nicer with silk thread. It took three weeks to arrive but thats only because i ordered numerous other things along with the thred so i'm guessing two weeks tops you would wait.

I just use a cotton thread for sewing.  Some of them are quite thin and strong and you can get any color you want
