Title: Is this locust?
Post by: Red Dwarf on December 30, 2008, 04:36:19 pm
A friend dropped round this small log the other day, he thought it might be black locust..what do you think?
Can I get a couple of belly slats out of it?
As you can see, there is very little heartwood.

Dunno what it is....but if it's black locust it might not be the best material for belly slats.  If it's long enough you might have a couple self bows there.

Yeah, that's locust. It's pretty young without much heartwood, but it'll probably make a bow. How long are the pieces? Locust makes a good selfbow, or a thin hickory backing is good if you're cutting belly slats.

The pieces are only 40" so would have to splice.
If I go for slats can I incorporate some of the sapwood?
