Title: NEw Erc bow
Post by: whitewoodshunter on January 07, 2009, 10:14:08 pm
This is my latest bow creation. Its a hickory backed Erc R/D. It has 2 inches of reflex that I glued in and it kept all of it, even after shooting about 100 times. It is 68 tip to tip and draw 52 at 26. It only weighs 22 ounces. It is 1.5 at the fades and 1/2 at the tips . The tip overlays are red oak. No hand shock and shoots very well. The bow was stained with walnut stain and 6 coats of wipe on poly. The grip is leather and I tried a fancy lacing job that turned out half way decent.I am really pleased with the way this bow turned out. I am now convinced that you could make a bow out of almost any wood as long as you keep it long and back it with hickory.Hope you like it and enjoy. WWH

Good looking bow, bet it's a good smooth shooter. I've been wanting to try a hickory-backed ERC myself.

PS-judging from your pics, that's an awful steep hill you built your house on, bet you have to nail your furniture to the floor to keep it from all piling up against the wall....;D

great bow. it does look like a real smooth shooter. I really like the color also. hickory backed erc might have to try that.

I like it!! I have a couple of ERC billets and a stave just waiting patiently for me to make bows out of them. A hickory backing sounds like a good idea. ;)

Mike, it's Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana.) I doubt if you have it out there- it's similar to some of the western junipers, but can eventually grow into a 50'-60' tall tree. It's really common in the Southeast. It's used a lot for fence posts, closet lining, and such.

That is an awesome tiller. Interesting angle though. If I could tiller like that I'd live in Australia or New Zealand too. Great job! Jawge

Good job, primitive, and well-styled. Excellent candidate for January Self Bow of the Month.

Hawk:    Easter red Cedar has a very aromic smell as well. It has a low spg. but works well with a good backing. It makes a fast accurate and physically  lightweight bow.
