would hickory be better? WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND?

Ipe and osage would be good choices. I haven't done boo backed bows but I'm sure someone will be along to offer more insights :)

Thin hickory works well with red oak.

If you want contrast on the bow, I'd use Boo. If you want the backing strip to fade into your core use the Hickory, and try to find a matching piece. I have one I'm just finishing, RedOak with a Hickory backing, that in some places you can't tell the backing from the core.
