Is there anyone out there who would like to donate the expertise for a heat treating demo at the Classic in Tennessee?Ron
-
sure, I will.
-
sure, I will.
What do we need besides rock?
-
LoL i try last year... you can ask Pappy how that went! of maybe someone elce will have something to say ;D
-
Let me see if I remember how that went!!!
"Bang" .."Bang"....Explosion!!!
Pappy - "Jesse!"
Pappy - "JESSSEEEEE!!!!"
Me - "Uhm ... He's right behind ya Pappy!" ;D ;D ;D
I will always remember that moment! Thought we were being shot at for a minute there!!!
-
sure, I will.
Your on Eddie!
-
I was standing next to the fire when the fireworks went off Jesse, as I recall all
Pappy said was one word... Jeeeeesssssssssseee! :D

I would love to try again to do some demos,We tried last year but the rain put a damper on things,
I would like to see,Napping of course, making pine pitch glue, string making,Fire building weather
permitting, chasing growth ring, bow lay out,I know we will all be doing this stuff all the time but would like to set up a time and try this again. So everyone would know when and where. I liked
the trimming feathers with a hot stick, don't remember who was doing that but thought that was cool and something good to show. What do yall think, this is an event as much for yall as it is for TwinOaks, and we have some of the most talented people I know of anywhere with this kind of
stuff ,We can show ,[not to put them down] more high tek glass/carbon guys it can be pretty simple.Just want to share and maybe ,just maybe bring a few around. :) ;)

I think Pappy is making an excellant point. Like he said, this is for all of us to learn from. If any of you would like to give a demo of anything at all, I'm sure it would be appreciated and people could learn from it. Maybe if who ever is interested could let Pappy know so we can try and schedule the demo's and post the schedule during the shoot for everyone to see and make plans to watch what they're interested in.
I'd be happy to demo the proper way to eat one of Crackers ribeye's that he's bringing ;D...someone else can supply a good potato baked to a nice soft texture which I'll be happy to demonstrate the proper way to butter it, salt it, and make it disappear! ;D Oh, and maybe some type of baked bread would be nice...and then some desert would be nice... ;)
-
Ronnie, well need fire and some sand. You need to bury the rock so it doesn't blow up and rain scrapnel everywhere.
-
Yep! We learned that one last Classic!
Eddie, You still up to running the demo?
How about I do a demo on making and using a natural bow sealent? I have some made up but would love to make some there. Need some pine sap or Rossin. I use Rossin and beeswax mixed together in a ratio where the pine sap and beeswax are no longer sticky. Think its a ration of about 1:2 Rossin to beeswax. Seems to seal the bow real well!
-
Alright young man no backing out.
-
I'd be glad to help out wherever I can. Main thing is if i can make it - you still bringing that truckload of rock Ronnie ::) :).
-
I'm makin a rock run in a couple of weeks my supplier says anything under seven or eight tons should be no trouble.Ron
-
Ahh! Ron, I think we may need a bit more than that!!!
Nope, not backing out but I need someone there who's done it before.
-
I'm still good for it. And I'll tell you what else I'll do. I'll bring the trusty Toaster Oven and show you guy's the proper way to cook Coral spalls the cheap, easy, redneck way.
-
Hey Eddie I got a toaster oven too I'll bring mine will it get hot enough to do the chert that I got?Ron
-
Hey "I GOTS ONE TOO!!!!"
Lets make it a toast off!!! ;D
Dang I crack myself up sometimes!!!
-
Now Tiller if you thought you'd have problems getting on the plane with a bag of sand just imagine if you tried to get on with a toaster oven.Ron
-
Yeah! They might think I was Rep. from Betty Crocker!
-
I got a small gas oven in the shop, one like came out of a camper.Ya Mullet you need to cover it
deep, right Jesse. ;) ;D ;D Jesse was going to show me how and believe me I know nothing about it,but I do know you can't throw rock in a fire, man you talk about fireworks. :D
Pappy
-
If I close my eyes I can just see you guys runnin and squealing. I sure hope it goes better this year.
-
We did a heat treating at the camp-o-rama last year. I believe it turned out OK.
Pappy, I will do a pitch glue demo and a pitch varnish demo.
-
Ronnie, the toaster will get hot enough for most Chert. I've done Coastal Plains in mine.
-
haha.. that was so funny..
Last summer me and Tim were camping out by LBL with some honeys, and had a fire going.. well i shoulda known better but I had a few in me. anyway we built it on the beach of the lake and it was all little cobbles of dover chert and about 20mins into our camp fire. we had fireworks.. i had a small piece of rock stick to my lip and gave me a 2nd degree burn.
-
Pat, I think I'm doing a varnish demo if its ok with Pappy. Why dont we do it together?
-
The heat treating will work if Pappy can keep the rain away this year.:) We heated some rock at Pat's last year, turned out pretty good. If anybody can get hold of some 55-gallon barrels cut in two, you can heat in that and it's easier to cover in case of rain.
-
Good idea!
-
Sure David. That will be fine.
-
You guys let me know if you want me to get more of that rock I brought last year I can get plenty
but not sure how good it is most opinions of it last year were not to good
Ron
-
K. Ron, Maybe we can try some heat on it and see how it comes out. I think a lot of it was weather worn and had cracks running through it. But if we can break it down enough we may be able to heat treat it and get some useable stuff out of it. James Parker (Robustus) would know more about it than I though!
-
That rock Ron has will not heat treat.. o have taken it up to 550 with no change..
That rock works best if you soak it in water before you knapp it. But i'v made some nice stuff from it.
-
Ron's rock is good material, it just had a lot of freeze-fractures in it. When you get a solid spall, it works good. More rock=good.
-
HillBilly, you get any of that i left at the sheal?
I left about 200-300lbs of it there.. i know Berry could not carry it all.
-
No, I didn't move fast enough I guess. Barry got some of it, of course. :) . I got a couple chunks at TN last year.
