Title: found some yew
Post by: dragonman on February 17, 2009, 05:48:49 pm
I went to town today, and took a different route down a narrow lane, and at the top of a hill saw some yew trees , went over to have a look and someone had just pruned off some big branches and left them in a pile. Couldn't have been a bowyer because most of the branche s where useless for bows, anyway one piece  about 9 inchs dia.  looks like it contained  a couple of billets ,no-one around and it seemed a shame for it to go to waste, I've wanted some yew for years so I was well happy ;D Just thought I wouod let you all know

Heck, why not? Better than leaving it to rot.

What are the growth rings like? Tight or wide?

maybe i'm too late with the answer, but the rings are really tight , so close, you can hardly count them, I might post some pics to get advice on splitting , it  could be difficult because its a limb the rings are tighter on one side than the other. I reckon the stresses are different on different sides of the limb

put the split in the sides and work on it from there. That way you will seperate the upper limb from the lower side. Mark them as I do think it causes differences in bow design and other stuff to come into play. If its too much work you could always give it to me!  ;D
