Last year at the N C State Traditional Bow Championships, near Hickory NC, Herb Reynolds ask me to build him a bow. Herb was the founder and life time president of The Carolina Traditional Archers, the club that sponsors the shoot. I found and bought the stave from a vender at the event(Yazoo's Dad) and Herb and I discussed the specifics of the bow he wanted.
A few weeks after the State Shoot I sadly learned of Herb's death. After contemplating the man I was going to make the bow for I decided to go on with my plans but I would donate Herb's Bow to CTA, to be raffled off at the State Championships this year. The bow Herb asked me to build was going to be very specific for him. The resulting bow is not the bow that Herb and I discussed but a bow that would be more appropriate for a raffled bow...and I'm sure Herb would approve.
I decided on a traditional American longbow style, 68"t/t and pulling 50#@28". The bow is ambidextrous, has cherry bark backing(thanks to Joe Klink) and deer antler and ipe tip overlays. The handle has a leather wrap and the arrow rests are small wedges of leather....and here she is!

-
That's awesome, Pat. You've got this selfbow building down! My sympathies on Herb's deathJawge
-
George, Herb had been in bad health for years but it never discouraged him or slowed him down. He was a very special person and is sadly missed by many.
Yazoo, I bought the stave from your Dad at Hickory last year.
Thanks David. I wanted to make this bow special for Herb and Joe's cherry bark set it off nicely!
-
Pat, that is a beauty, and I think a great memorial and tribute to Herb, far better than some cold tombstone.

Nice Job Pat! ;D
Your cherry bark always looks a different color than the stuff I've harvested here. Ours is more purplish red....
-
Outstanding Pat. you out did your self on this one. Very Nicely done.
Bow looks perfect. Excellent Idea on the raffle. I'm sure it will benefit both the CTA and Herb's memory.
nicely done,
wade

You did Herb proud pat , and you also helped me figure out what to do with a knife Herb ordered from me. Thanks for sharing boo
-
Very nice looking bow Pat! But honering a past friend is even nicer.Good on ya.
-
Very Nice Bow Pat.....and I am sure that Herb would be Honored that you made a Bow from the Stave in His Honor and then donated it to a great cause
-
Thanks everyone. Anyone that knew Herb knew how special he was. If I can be half the man Herb was I'd be doing good. He would hold hardily approve of the donation of his bow to his club. Without Herb there would be no CTA. James, I miss him too. Hickory will never be the same without Herb.
Ryan, I opted to leave the lichens and moss on the bark. Generally it gets scraped off to show the beautiful coppery bark underneath.
Bobby, Herb would want it that way. He would approve!
Thanks again everyone. The State shoot won't be until the end of May so I'll be bringing Herbs Bow to the classic to show off. ;D
-
Nice bow Pat, just my style and for a great cause, I never knew Herb but must have been a fine gentleman. Kenneth
-
Yea Kenneth, He was. I've put over 100 arrows through this bow and today before the pics she was braced for about 4 hours. I'm pleased with the outcome....and she shoots very well.
ps. Hillbilly has the Medicine Bow so I will put the sinew string on it when( if? ;D ) i get it back.
Maybe he will stick a pig with it first! 8)
-
Awesome job Pat! I swear I sent you some really long bark, did you trim it short to create the "all osage" tips? Man oh man that's nice!
-
Yea Joe I did shorten it a bit. ::) You sent 40" stuff! I prefer to leave the tips bare. The edges are fairly rough with the texture of the bark so this will protect the string. Thanks again for the bark. Let me know when I can return the favor. I wanted to make this bow special and your bark did just that! ;) 8)

Great looking bow Pat and sounds like a fitting tribute to a good friend.
-
That's a fine bow Pat, you really did a great job on it! You continue to be an inspiration to us all on the important things in life! ;)
-
Pat, that's a helluva nice bow, and a great gesture- Herb would be proud. You're right, it sure won't be the same at Hickory without Herb there. I'm gonna give the pigs one more try with the medicine bow. if I don't connect, I'll assume that my medicine sucks and send it on to somebody with better medicine. :)

Pat, building a bow like that for a friend is outstanding... to keep on building the bow after he was gone to the happy hunting grounds is nothing more than HONORABLE... A/ho brother... well done!!!!! I am sure your friend is looking down and saying I wish I could shoot her.. Looks like a BOM to me for sure.. HAWK
