Here's one I just finished up, and I'm plum tickled with it. I made it from a blank I got from KnightD. It's bamboo-backed ipe, first time I've worked with ipe, but definitely not the last. It's 64" ntn, 57# @ 27", about an inch wide at the fades. Took almost no set-tips are still about 3/4" in front of the handle, started out at a fuzz over an inch reflex after I shortened it a few inches before tillering. Riser is osage, purpleheart, hickory, and ipe. Tip overlays are purpleheart, padauk, and mahogany. I pimped this one up a little with the laminated overlays and dye job. I tillered it until the reflex was almost straight at full draw, could probably get the tips opening up just a bit more and make a couple minor adjustments; but I like the weight its at and love the way it shoots so I'm leaving well enough alone. This thing is faaassst and shoots right where I'm looking. I named it "Hot Chocolate" because of the color and zippiness. The photos really don't do it justice, I'll try to get some better ones up if I can get an afternoon that isn't cloudy and dreary.

Dang son!!!!!! That is a nice looker! .......Simply gorgeous. Love the name. Two thumbs
-
NICE! 8) You know I like that kinda bow. You did a really great job on it. I like how you did the handle and that dye job is cool. Im working on a similar blank from David but with different woods in the handle. Great to see how it shines with that nice finish you put on it. At 57# Im sure its got plenty of power ;)
-
Thanks, guys. I think I'm gonna be shooting this one a lot this year. Here's another refugee pic:

Well I'll be danged Steve! It's been so long since I've seen you with a bow in your hands, I thought you'd just quit 'em and took up knapping ;D
That's a nice looking piece of equipment.
I just finished up a little 58" BBI David sent me also. I have to agree with you on the speed thing. The one I have is deceivingly fast. I say that, because it shoots so smooth and quiet you'd think it was slow but after putting a few arrows through my chronograph. I was amazed!
That Ipe/bamboo combo is awesome.
-
you did a fine job on this one.. I also like the way you did the fades and handle..
-
Nice job on that one Steve. It has been quite a while since you posted anything. You did a bang up job finishing that one though. :)
-
Thanks again, guys. Yeah, I guess it's been awhile since I posted one-just been busy lately with work, going back to college, family, and everything else at once. Made a couple that I probably forgot to post, and I've got a bunch of half finished ones sitting around. Kinda got the wood scraping bug again, so I'll probably have a couple more up before long.

That's one gorgeous bow. Real nice workmanship and wonderful color.

I couldnt imagine another bow. ;) ;) ;) HAHAHA GREAT BOW HILLBILY! LOVE IT. the colors are fantastic!
-
Thanks again guys. The riser wood is David's credit. Yep, Phil, that's some of the padauk you traded me in the overlays-nice wood.
-
Whew! That's a Beaut' Steve. Did you notice how ugly Cuz is always trieing to draw the ugly away from hisself? If it wasn't for that pretty wife and his bows he'd be enbarrased to post a full draw without a Tillering Tree. ;D
You know, playing with Lam's and Ipe now, heck, you might throw away all those baseball bat knapping tools and play with copper.
-
Don't hold your breath. ;D
-
Fantastic. Danny
-
How did I miss this beauty! Great looking bow Steve! I really like the wood combination you came up with, definitely catches the eye for a second, third, and fourth look! Great attention to detail and love the finish job! Can I fling an arrow out of her at the Classic please? ;)
-
Greg, you can certainly fling more than one as long as I get to fling an arrow from your "Blossom" bow. :)
-
Fantastic looking bow Hillbilly! Hope I'll get a closer look at the Classic...makes me think one of knightd's blanks could be in my near future!
-
Beautiful bow Steve. I don't know how I missed it before. Sure is out of character for you but very well done!
-
Great looking bow, took alot of talent to turn that one out.
-
Beautiful bow Steve. I don't know how I missed it before. Sure is out of character for you but very well done!
So you're saying all my other bows are ugly ? ;D ;D ;D

Different! ;D ;D ;D Beauty is in the eyes of the bow holder!
-

Man that's a good looking bow Steve. It just looks fast!
Alan
-
Whew! Been working with Ipe a lot lately and want to thank you for giving me some ideas. Beautifully done.
-
Now that's a pretty bow! How long is the built up fade area (to the tips of the osage)? Do you have any worries of the fades wanting to pop off at full draw? Your glue lines look perfect. Congratulations.
-
Very nice Steve
-
Thanks again, guys. Susquehannock, (type that three times fast :) ) the whole riser area is about 13" long. No worries about anything popping off, there's about a 15" osage power lam between the bamboo and ipe, also. And the glue lines are perfect, but that was David's doing, not mine. The riser was already glued on the blank when he gave it to me, I just shaped it up the way I wanted it. Only thing I glued onto this one was the tip overlays.
-
A couple of questions from a student of bow making if you don't mind:
1. What do you use to glue the backing to the bow? I've been using Titebond III with my maple backed ipe and it seems to not work very well. They keep breaking and the backing comes right off!
2. I see your latest is a 64 inch nock to nock. I've been trying to build 60 inch tip to tip (I have short arms! :) ) and I have trouble getting the right taper from handle to tip. Been making mine 7/16 inch to just under 1/4 inch. What kind of taper do you build?
Mahalo Nui Loa!

I already answered some of these on the other thread. I think David glued this one up with Urac. Degreasing is important with ipe. I glued the tips on this one with TB3 after acetoning it, and they stuck fine.
