I rekon I'll get this started.Hope no one minds, but it is April already? Dalton of any type? Long, short, big, small.Find a type you like, and build it.Or better yet build one of every type you can find pics of. Here in Mo, there are all kinds of daltons, from just about every kind of material. Bring um on.
Good luck and happy knappin.:)
-
I'll second that :) - good luck..

Nice stuff Hillbilly! Love that raw texas mat. Would trade a truck load of burlinton for some....(If I had a truck load) :)
-
Well I don't have any old ones but did finish this one after I snuck home from work this afternoon. It's Ranbow Obsidian I really like the way that stuff looks.

All right, I'm on for this one. I always wanted to make daltons. I tend to make them anyways when trying to make something else. Its been imprinted in me from an earlier life, I think! :o
-
Very nice point Mullet!
I was in the mood, so I found me a good piece of burlington and had at it. I guess I was on my game tonight cause this one came through without a hitch. Not sure if you can see the heal fracture that runs across the base? This is probly one of the best points I have every made. Got lucky. :o

SWEET! ;D
-
Those all look great. I don't have time to make one but here's a couple of pretty rough authentic ones I have. Most of them I've seen from around here are usually better quality than these.

guy handed me a five gallon bucket of choice normanskill at my club this weekend. sometimes things go your way. i decided to knock out another dalton with it. i got lazy at the end and should of sharpened the antler but didnt and started creating a bunch of little hinges. i love this rock.

good one Jamie.

Dang ...another tater chip knapper! :) Nice! You ever decide to trade some of that off, let me know.
-
Holy Crap!, Jamie, that one is thin. You are going to like James Parker and Steve, the other concrete chippers. ;)
-
thanks guys. you can see the screw ups better in the side shot . trust me they are there.
timo , the guy who gave it to me said he had a couple of decent sources and would show me where they were. when he does ill get a truck load and let you know. probably be sometime this summer. and yes as long as i get enough i will share the wealth with everybody else ;D
im really looking forward to breathin in some silica dust with every body down there. i wanna see steve swing that baseball bat. ;D
-
Great looking point Jamie, very nice job. :)
Pappy
-
Another nice one Jamie - man that things thin and symetrical. I can see them steps in the side view but their really shallow, that don't hurt a thing.
-
Man, that's a pretty point Jamie. It would work on the end of a stick!
Jim
-
Here's my attempt. I found one in my book that looked about like this so thought I'd give that a shot. This is a peice of Georgetown that I picked up in - well Georgetown :). Found an old rancher that had nothing better to do than sit on the porch and drink ice tea - we hit it off instantly and I secured permission to load up all the rock I wanted. Life is a journey - ain't it 8).

Being from the state of burlinton,I have to reply about the beauty of the red point...Love that color! Looks nice, with good flake scars. What temp did you cook it?
-
Oooooh, me like ;D. Love those Roger, but really like the red one - nice!!
-
excellent job!
-
I cooked it in a turkey roaster for a few days that got it good enugh to spall.then I put it in the fire pit down an inch or two in the sand and charcoal fired it.That took a couple days to cool off but it it did the trick

Where was the "pig pen" located? :)
-
nice un
-
Great points Roger, I've never tried pig poop might have to look for some :D
-
well, heres my feeble attemp so far. the tallahasse dalton is coastal plain and the horse creek is a little nodguel i found at at a motel in tennesse in the gravel they use for landscape.(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l338/knap_123/daltonarkrock101.jpg)
-
Wow! Nice points. Looks like I will be doing all my knapping at he Tenn. Classic. Just cant seem to get any time at the moment! Work, work and more WORK!!! RRRRRRRRRR!!!!!! :'( :'( :'(

-
Tsk! Tsk! Paul!!! ;D
-
Nice points John. You can send that Coastal one to me. ;D
-
great points man
-
Dang! With all these fine Daltons I think we should try a calf creek next time? ;D (Sorry, I kinda lost my mind there for a minute) >:D
Very nice points!
-
Calf creeks sound good. Most of the one's in my id book have the ears already broken off or worked down anyway ::).
-
No Problem! I can calf a creek!
-
I've tried them on a few occasions, and always end up with snapping ears. A buddy told me to keep the preform wide, thin the base well and run the notches. Then go back and bring the sides in to finish. Never tired it....yet. ;)
-
Thin the base first then run the notches using inderect pressure flaking. Then thin up the rest. Make sure the basic shape is there before thinning the base though!
-
Hmm, that sounds a little spooky - running the notches first. I'd be afraid that'd be more likely to snap the ears than the other way. I'm no authority on calf creeks though :).
-
Tiller, you done much punch notching?
-
Nah, Nah Timo! Inderect PRESURE flaking. Means coming from the back side of the notch not the front.
-
yea Tiller I got ya on that.:) I'll try that on my next, and next and next one. :)
I was asking you if you ever punched before?
-
I've been punching lately with some coming out good.I found you have to keep the burs on the sides of the punch filed smooth ALL THE TIME! them little buggers will pop the ear off and it's allways on the second notch >:(

I just stumbled onto this thread....I'm amazed at the quality of work you folks turn out. You really should all take a big, well deserved clap on the back.

Lets hear some ideas for the May challenge.
Calf creek was mentioned, can't remember what else without looking back.
I'll throw in something. Since alot of us use our points in the field,How bout a hunting point of some type, cahokia, basic corner notch, etc, but making it with a certain grain weight?
-
(http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a257/hardawaypoints/Knapped%20points/Open013-1.jpg)
Just under the wire. This one is made from Pedernales from Texas. I couldn't get either flute to run. This is the better side.
Kinda like a non-resharpened Dalton. I broke a couple of others I was working on.
Jim
-
Calf creek or something with a certain grain weight would both be a challenge. I'm game for either Timo, we need to announce it quick though :).
That's a nice authentic looking point Jim! And from tx perd, aught to last awhile..
-
I like the hunting points idea just choose style and size. Here's two I haffted for a couple buddies last night

-
Hardaway,ya got a nice scar pattern on that one!
I always have favored the side notch/ cahokia design.Maybe try to make a couple matched? 100-125 grains?
How bout we wait till everyone gets back from the classic. maybe they'll want to add imput?
Nice looking points and hafting job the bone pile! ;) You not use pitch to set your points?
-
I'll get them to take a survey at the Classic and maybe post their pics from there. Cahokia sounds great to me.. Nice arra's Roger!
