Well I haven't felt like working on a Bow in forever....got off on a Knife Making Tangent for a while....that I am sure that all of the Recipients of my Knives appreciated!! But ever since the Classic I got the "BUG" again...I haven't had much time since I am working 12 hours a day....7 days a week ever since I got Home from Pappy's....But I picked up this Hickory Stave that I had started on a year ago and decided to make a Static Recurve Paddle Bow out of it....I bent the Tips and backed it with a set of Rattler Hides that I killed two years ago...they didn't match perfectly...but once the Leather Grip was put on....you couldn't see the difference anymore...the Top Limb Skin has a Scar on it where it seems to have been Bitten by an Animal and healed up...you can see the different color to the Spot where the Bite is. The Bow is 66 inches nock to nock...2 1/2 inches wide at the widest part of the Fades...tapering to 3/8 inch Tips....it draws a little over 56 pounds at 29 inches...and is a typical acting paddle Bow...which I like! It isn't nothing beautiful...but to everyone that has gotten to know Me....they knowthat this is my Style of Bows...hope you like it

Looks good to me. Don't look like it took much set....is it fast? What kind of string is that?
-
It did good for set...but then I build mostly Paddle Bows...so I am getting a good eye for them....and it is so dry here in the Texas Panhandle...Hickory does great....the String is a Flemish Twist String made from Flax....from a distance it looks like Sinew...but I haven't the Patience for one of them!!!
-
wow, beautiful bow and really great tiller El! I also like how the snakeskins have "character". Looks good "hovering" in your dining room too. How'd you get it to float in the air like that? Lol :)
-
That Hovering Bow Bit is a Trade Secret!!!! Naw...I have it hanging from a A/C Vent in the Ceiling!!
-
Yes!! The ol' Hovering Bow Trick....
Howdy E. Destructo,
I'm glad you decided to come back to makin' bows.
Hay, I have a, nearly completed, Paddle Bow, (it's 60" long, shooting for about 47#@28"), and I also intend to back it. It's made from a nice Oak board that I found at the orange, Big Box building supply store. I would like to put similar static recurves on mine, except, I have never built / bent a curve into a limb. Can you provide further directions (and pictures) to show us how it's done? I would especially like to see the form you used to bend it along with some dimensions and a description of the process. Did you use heat? Was it challenging to get the two limbs shaped so symmetrically? And, did you put a long string groove on the back of the recurvered section, near the tips?
Thanks for sharing.
Oh, and by the way, I think your bow looks terrific. When I see it, I think of using it for ground-blind hunting in the thick, thick woods... Waiting... to strike!
All the Best,
Canoe

Damn Mike,
you do still know how to make a bow,and a beautiful one at that :o
glad to see you making bows instead of knives again, maybe i should follow your lead.lol
love them curves, first thing that comes to mind when looking at them curves is " VA VA VA VOOM" he he he
the first thing that came to mind in the full draw pic was "hot damn thats a sweet tiller",second thing was "dude know body wants to see your knobby knees" just kidding mike.
personally i dont see any diff in them skins either, like you said the grip hid any noticeable differences in them.
well i need ti finish 4 knives and then maybe get on a bow, actually i have a dude stopping by tonight that wants me to build him a bow.
once again mike, glad to see you making scrapings again ;D
peace,
Tim

Looks like you haven't lost the touch.
BTW, what does a paddle bow act like?
-
Hey Mike that should just about cover the rent on the canvas condo. ::)
-
If you look in the Top Picture ....you can see where the Skin is scarred near the Top Tip.....and here is a Picture of the differences between the Skins that the Handle is covering....As for how a Paddle Bow acts....They act like a Paddle Bow... >:D They are a Little bouncy in the Hand....No Stack but they do have a little Hand Shock...Lets just say...they have Spirit!! The Recurves were boiled in....just make sure that you leave enough material at the Tips in case they get some small cracks when the Limbs dry back out....you want enough to be able to scrape it back down to good wood again...also if you use a thin piece of tin or steel on the Belly Side when you bend the...this reduces the chances of having cracks in the Belly...I just used a 2X6 piece I had laying around...cut the dimensions in it I want ed and clamped on....here is a picture of one that I used on a Red Oak Board Bow I made years ago....crude ...but it worked fine. I have other Forms...but these work fine...
As for my Knees there Mr. Seelen...thats the Leg that got destroyed in the Bike Wreck....I'll take the knobby Knee over a Prosthetic any day......... ;) ;D
Cracker....you want one???????? You tell me what You would like it to be poundage wise....and We'll see what Santa Brings you this Year.... :P

El D
Nice looking bow. The tiller looks as good as the detail work. Does it draw as smooth as that osage bow you brought to TN? Good job.
-
Hey Rick...yeah it draws really smooth...nothing I have ever made Draws as sweet as that Sliver of Osage I brought to Pappy's!! But it does have a bit of Hand Shock on release as do most Paddle Bows...maybe some heavier Arrows would do the Trick
-
Yeah, wide bows work good in this darn dry weather out here....but at least it's a dry dryness... ;D
Looks great Mike.
-
Thanks Patrick....it aint one of your Museum Quality Bows.....but it is a very useable Paddle Bow Design...and the Added Length make it a lot better for my Long Draw Length.... ::)
-
Ppretty damn good for a old crippled, long haired biker Yooper ;D Bring it home with ya in August Mike
I'll see how it shoots at 24" :D
-
Dang Mike, I want one! I have love them osage paddle bows since I saw the one Ken Wilhelm had in a picture with Howard Hill. They are sweet. Good job , steve
-
Heck of a job Micheal! It's nice to see somebody actually admit that their bow has some hand shock...and that they don't care :o I like a smooth shooting bow, but don't mind a little thump either. ;)
The skins look great and it makes it nicer when you did'nt have to pay for them too 8)
-
Nice looking bow, Mike.
-
Nice Job Mike. Tiller looks spot on. ;D
-
Thanks Guys....I like it and am always looking for a good stave to make a Paddle Bow from too...and the one that Hillbilly gave Me for some of that Rock I brought...will be a fine Stave for another one....it has an almost flat Back so I won't have to De-crown it like I did this one....makes for a lot stronger Bow if you can leave the Back intact..Tiller is a bit different to do on a Paddle Bow...Patrick can back Me up on that one for sure...I think He and I are about Obsessed with Paddle Bows!!!
-
Obsessed.... ??? Who me?? O:)
-
Nice job !! I like the skins and the over all profile..
-
Really nice bow!
Does it bend in the handle??
-
wow i didnt realise you were talented ;D. excellent work. the bow floatin in the air kinda freaked me out seein as i havent had coffee yet.
-
Hey Mike
You don't owe me nuthin for the tent. But I would like to own one of those babies. maybe a trade is in order.Ron
-
Cool looking bow! The tiller looks great, as do the skins. Nice job.
-
Nice bow Mike. What do they have going on at the refinery to justify 7-12's ?
-
Mike i wasnt trying to make fun of the damaged knee, trust me on that
i was more talking about the skinniness of them legs and how white they are.you can hardly tell where the socks end and the leg begins
you live in an area that a whole lot sunnier year round than me,and your skin is whiter than mine lol ;D ;)
peace my paleo brother,
tim
-
Looks good Mike - beautiful weapon! I gotta get off my can one of these days..
-
OK here goes..........
Yes Patrick....You are Obsessed.......... ;D ;) :D
Thank You David...coming from You thats a big Compliment
Medicinewheel....Yes My Paddlebows do bend slightly through the Handle...probably why they have a little Hand Shock too.. >:D
Jamie get some Coffee and quit being such a Panzy-Ass....if a floating Bow scares You...My Wicken Ex-Wife would have really freaked You Out!! :o ::) O:)
Cracker...you let me know what You want and We can work out some kinda Trade or Deal...no problem you Big Gorilla.. :P :o
Little John....Thanks...and as for the Shutdown...We came down with 8 Units..! De-Coker Unit...1 Cat Cracker...1 Alky Unit...and a 5 Unit Gas Oil Hydrogen De-Sulfurization System (Gohds Unit)...so We had Our work cut out for Us.
Tim...I know what you meant my Minny-Sodian Friend!! And as for the white Legs...when you work the Job I do...where Nomex Clothing is a Must...your Skin doesn't ever seen the Light of Day....and it's either Dark when I get Home...or I sleep all Day to go to work at Night!! So even the N.A. Blood don't keep any color in this Hide!!!
And as for You Cowboy.....yes you do need to get off that Arse....and get some thing done....you have been dormant for too long....get up and get on with it... :P >:D
-
Great job and a serious candidate for May Self BOM, too 8)
-
Wow. Inspiration to become better and try new designs. Maybe I'll try one with the short oak staves I have drying. What would be a minimum length for this style at 24"-28" draw? Poundage wouldn't matter.
-
I draw 38-29....and I have found that for a nice Draw with no String Angle Problems....66inches is a great length....not nowhere near what the California Paddle Bows are supposed to be forTrue Lengths....40-50 inches...but more like what the Wampanoag Bows were...I make Mine 66 inches NTN....2 1/2" at the widest point...fading to 3/8" Pin Nocks
-
Never have been a fan of the paddle bows, but I like that one alot! Great tiller! ;)
-
Mighty fine looking bow...tiller looks great! Never did much curving on hickory, might give the boiling a try sometime. :)
-
Did you put a rest on this one or do I need to send you a box of band aids for the fletch wounds? >:D
Man you did an outstanding job on that bow Mike. I don't care what Dana says about you, you an alright guy ;D
Tracy

Tracy
That makes two of Us......... :P ;D
No Rests on My Bows....guess I will either get the Fletchings right...or get one hell of a Scar / Callous built up there...... :'(
Thanks Tracy...glad you like it.
-
That's a beauty Mike,I like it.It looks like it is a very smooth shooter,is it? God Bless
-
Nice Smooth Draw...no stack to speak of....but it does have a little Personality....likes to kick a Bit...but most if not all Paddle Bows do!!
-
When you boiled in the tip flips, did you reduce the width of the bow down to near final dimensions first, or leave it full width, then reduce after flipping?
Looks great! I've got a shorter piece of elm that is just dying to be made into a short bow.
Thanks,
D
-
I reduced it after the Tips were recurved....to lessen the chance of Splits due to boiling
-
El D that's a really pretty bow. I really like the skins and I bet it shoots like a dream.
-
Thanks David...and it does Shoot really Nice too.... Do Ya Want One............. >:D
-
Thanks David...and it does Shoot really Nice too.... Do Ya Want One............. >:D

-
Nice bow Mike.
-
Thank You Marc.....coming from You that means a lot!
-
sweet tiller, El D.!
-
Man ....I really appreciate all of the Nice Comments on this Bow.....I love this Style of Bow and have made so many that I am comfortable doing them....I wish I had the Talent to make some of the awesome looking Bows that so many Others make monthly...with their Needle Tips and Overlays....I am going to have o break out of my Comfort Zone...and give them a Shot..... ;)
-
Howdy El Destro,
Hey, I'm still lookin' and likin'...
On my 60" Paddle Bow, the tips are nearly to size. So, do you think I should go ahead and try to Flip the Tips on 'em anywho? If so, what is the outer radius on that Tip Fippin' Form you posted?
Also, would it be a better idea, since my tips are nearly to size, if I were to do a less exaggerated flipped tip and would there be any physical advantage to doing so? I mean, would it still help in reducing string angle to a noticeable degree?
Would there still be a high chance of the tips getting cracks through the process?
One more question, did you carve (or cut) a long string groove (or guide) into the belly side up near the tips on the curves?
Thanks again for your encouragement and for your guidance.
All the Best,
Canoe
-
The Form I used had a Radius of 7 inches.....You have already tapered the Tips and thinned them also? You don't state what wood you used for this Bow....if you have thinned the Tips and Tapered them to near completion...I would not reccommed trying to bend them at all....JMO....and also I did not grind...carve or File in a String Groove on the Belly Side of the Limb Tips...if you look closely at the Third Picture that I posted....I wrapped the Tips with Back Sinew and Hide Glue...and before the Hide Glue had totally set up...I laid a piece of oiled Saran Wrap on the Tips...Braced the Bow...and let the String pressure put a grove in the Sinew as it Dried....it didn't end up very deep...but it was effective none the less
-
Mike, thats a great tip on doing sinew nocks ;D ;)
keepng that one in the memory banks for further reference
-
Howdy El Destructo,
Thanks for your responce to all my questions - too many perhaps.
BTW, my paddle bow is from a nice, straight grained, Oak Board.
And yes, the tips are nearly to size. So, I wont try to curve the tips on this one.
And, you said that radius is seven inches - I'll keep that in mind.
Thanks again,
Canoe
-
Canoe....I always try to have at least a half inch of Wood thickness on the Tips when I bend them...this way if you do get a little Splintering...it will be removed before the Tips are completed...also leave a little more wood in the width of the Tip too...at least for Me this seems to help......and you can never ask too many questions either......... ;)
-
Nice bow Mike, just got back and seen this, very well done. :)
Pappy
-
Thanks Pappy...I appreciate the Compliment...Glad your Vacation went well...glad to see you got Miss Joanie out to see the West....it's sure a awesome sight....when all you are used to is Trees and Water!!!
