Title: New project
Post by: Pappy on June 01, 2009, 07:33:02 am
Greg was at the barn the other day to pick out a stave for Doug[new guy just getting into bow building. While he was there he came up with a snaky stave, after looking at it ,we decided to get a belly split and the top will make a couple. We plan on building 3 all from the same stave ,all with the same snake. One for Greg one for BigA and one for me,should be cool if we can pull it off. Will keep you updated. :)

Outstanding.

Turns out this isn't as easy as it might seem.  I started one, well two I guess, for Mickey and Dianne and for one reason or another have had 2 false starts.  At this point I got like 5 snakey bows in the box waiting to be tillered out and have forgotten which go with what.

You need a really good stave to start with and it looks like you got a winner in that one Pappy.
Title: Re: New project
Post by: Pappy on June 23, 2009, 10:54:44 am
Ya they can be a little tricky sometime,I relate it a lot like a highly reflexed stave ,they will fool you on the weight really easy and you really have to keep an eye on the tiller in the curves they will fool you and hinge very easy in them spots.  :) Sometime like you I get to many going myself.I try and mark them good before I put them up with weight and where I am in the tillering stage, braced or
draw length  so if I don't get back to them for a while I know where to start. :) I hope to get this one on the form this weekend and maybe start tillering.  :)

Made a little headway this weekend on these, well I thought I would be last but BigA is pulling up the rear as of now.GregB got his shooting Sat. and the grip worked on ,I got mine floor tillered
and on the form for some reflex and lining up the handle and tips.Mine is ready for the tiller stick and Greg's is ready for some of him fine finish work,The part I think he like best other than killing
stuff with them. Here are a few pictures of where we are.Come on Big A. ;) ;D ;D

It is cool and I wished I remembered who gave it to me.It may have been Pat,it has some initials on it .If anyone sees this and knows please let me know,I would like to thank them. :) I don't know for
sure but they may have just lost it at the Classic and it wound up in my box. :) :) I know it works really good on a snaky stave it you have it roughed out. I also used it on one limb of the take down I have been working on to match the smaller/narrower  limb.It only had a little snake but worked great. :)

Hope to get back on these this weekend,Greg has been working on the tips on his this week, maybe BigA and myself can make some head way.We have a bunch of Hickory stave's to get ready for the Scouts in a couple of weeks but hope I can fit in a little time to at least get it braced.
Hunting season is coming quick and I sure would like to have a new bow.Don't have many to
shoot. ;) ;D I'll keep you updated,O ya the little tool came from PatB,don't remember weather he left it on purpose or gave it to me but either way it is pretty cool and a great Idea. :)

Here are a few pictures of BigA getting his snake bow to floor tiller. He then placed it on the form to remove any propellar it might have in the limbs and add some reflex. It came off the form looking good and with about 1-1/2" of reflex.  I finished a grip for mine this weekend and have it all laced up for when I get the bow sealed. I'm giving it a couple of weeks drying time over the air conditioner from putting the skins on before I start sealing it. :)

Title: Re: New project
Post by: GregB on July 15, 2009, 08:12:47 am
I started sealing the skins/back of my snake bow last night. Plan to do the initial sealing of the skins with tru-oil until through lite sanding between coats I have a smooth texture, then going back with poly clear satin over the entire bow. I've done this several times in the past with good results as long as you scuff up the tru-oil a little for the poly to adhere too.

Pappy, BigA, and I need to come up with some names for our bows...I'm getting near that stage of the process. ;)

Pappy, could you do a post about how that center line tool works with maybe some close up pics so that I could make one?
Thanks
Title: Re: New project
Post by: GregB on July 15, 2009, 12:27:00 pm
Dave, that jig is probably about 6-8" long with a couple of dowells out toward the ends and with a pencil in the center between those two dowells. When using the dowells extend down past the edges of the stave once you've chased it to one grain as with osage. You basically apply pressure with your hand to where both dowells which straddle the stave one on each side stay in contact with the two sides of the stave. Then you maintain that pressure while going down the length of the stave and the pencil is drawing a centerline on the stave. I don't personally think that it is foolproof, because I've seen the edges of a lot of staves that aren't parallel from one side to the other after splitting the log. But it would work as a tool to start with, but I would personally check the line full length of the stave after I used it to ensure it is correct. Hope this helps, I don't personally have a picture of the jig. Pappy will probaby chime in with further explanation and a picture. ;)
Title: Re: New project
Post by: Pappy on July 15, 2009, 12:55:23 pm
Greg explained it pretty well, and yes on a really snaky stave you need to recheck the center line
especially if the loge was sawed out and not split ,but it dose give you a good starting point and
works great on straight wood.Like any other tool in this stuff ,they help but not fool proof.  :)

thanks for showing the jig...looks like it has a 5/16 nut in it to hold the pencil?  Same as eric krewson's tillering gizmo?

Question about your steampipe:  is it sealed at both ends?  Or are there vent holes to allow steam to escape (and thereby draw more steam in)?

This weekend i plan to make one of those out of pvc piping, with a T in the center, a cap on one end, and a clean-out at the other end.   Should i drill a couple 1/4" holes or so?  One at each end?

thanks,

radius
Title: Re: New project
Post by: Pappy on July 16, 2009, 11:46:56 am
I have wood plugs in both ends wit 3 or 4 1/8 vent holes drilled in them to let it draw.I first done
it without the holes and it didn't get as hot and not near as much steam. You also need to slant the pipes back torward the pot so the moisture will drain back, don't use as much water that way and run
the chance of it boiling dry while you steam.  :)

That was some fine splitting work you did to pull off three staves of that quality
Title: Re: New project
Post by: GregB on July 16, 2009, 01:44:49 pm
John, I split off what we call the belly split which is the point end of a split log. Then on the bark side we drew a line following the linear grain and cut it on the band saw. Probably would have split okay to have gotten two bow out of the top portion, but we played it safe.  ;)
Title: Re: New project
Post by: Ohio John on July 16, 2009, 01:59:53 pm
good tip. I have a few big osage quarters that I might try that with ... Might get three rather than 2 bows out of it
Title: Re: New project
Post by: Pappy on July 17, 2009, 06:40:02 am
John it is called the greed factor  :) >:D A lot of time if we have a snaky stave that is wide enough
for 2 bows but you are never really sure that it will split they way you want we do that.Get right in the center and lay out a center line just like you would if you was laying out a bow. Then saw down that line and then lay out bows on the 2 half's. I did the same thing on a stave a couple of years back and got 3 where I would have probably only got 2.

thanks, Pappy...

I'm gonna make a couple bowmaking tools this weekend:  a shaving horse and a steampipe.  I'm gonna use pvc plumbing pipe, with a T at the middle like you have, a cap on one end and a clean-out at the other end.  I'll try and tilt it in like you say so the water returns to the pot after it condenses.  It's a great idea.  I dunno, though:  maybe i'll just have to tip the thing every so often.

Here is a good site for all sorts of cool stuff to build, the shaving horse is in the middle of the page.

Here are some others:

don't mean to hijack this thread, but let me answer real quick:

brother bear, it's good to hear from you!  that adult beverage you served the first night was amongst the finest i ever tried.  and so was your hospitality.  please say hello to the OHIO BOYS  ;D

i'm definitely coming early. the 24th of April being my 50th birthday, i decided to reward myself with a trip "home" and if possible celebrate with my friends across the pond.  i'll also bring my new wife along, so you see for yourself, ;D that she outshoots me all the time.

greg, "two deer" has become my "turn to" bow.  this year, i shot all tournaments with him.  awesome bow, much better then the knucklehead behind the string  ;D

the sad news is: i had to retire the "friendship/signature" bow.  it developed a crack in the back right above the upper fadeout.  it didn't break.  we noticed it on time.  but i don't want to risk anything, so he's gonna get a place of honor on the wall, next to the friendship arrows i have received over the last few years.

I Have a lot of work to do this week. Gerg and Pappy are way ahead of me. To top it off I'm a rookie on snake bows. Can you guys just imagin how high the mark is for me to keep up with these two. I do know where to get some good advice. "Big A"

BigA, you're selling yourself short...I've seen you in action on the tillering tree and you know what you're doing! Anthony actually started his interest with selfbows before the rest of us after reading Massey's book. His first osage bow took some years to finish without anyone around to give him advice and no internet with sites such as this to learn from.  He's come on strong the last few years though and is a great teacher as his involvement with the bow making during the Tn. Classic proves. ;)

Quote
greg, i've seen your unmatched craftsmanship, when it comes to finishes, so can't wait for pics on yours.
Thanks for the compliment Marius! I'm trying to improve and try new techniques...I still fall way short of a lot of the folks on here who demonstrate great ability in a wide range of bow types that they produce. :)

Got the tip overlays glued on last night, deer antler and cow horn.Plan on working them down tonight and finish the tiller.I had it 50@22 before heat treating and been letting it rehydrate for a few days.Hope to be shooting it by the weekend.   ;) :) I'll have some pictures of the progess
soon. :)

Got the tips worked down on mine yesterday. They turned out pretty good.BigA came over
for our weekly shoot and said he had his to brace and was going to work on his somemore when he got home.I plan on finishing the tiller this evening or Friday.Comming along.Don't know about GreB's he is keeping it all hush hush about it.I don't like to show his stuff much till it is finished and then put it all on you at once. ;) :) Maybe we can beg a little and get somekind of picture of how he is coming this weekend. :) I also ordered some Snake skins from Mike Yancy yesterday, they will be a little different. We wanted to do them with different skins and Greg already got the timber and BigA has the Parries and I really didn't want another Diamond back so I went with something different. It's a secret.  ;) ;D

If I'm not mistakened, we've showed as much detail on mine even to the point of shooting it as yours! ;D The only change since last pic's are the skins and I'm still sealing the bow. Taking my time at that... I have the grip made and string made...probably will complete the bow by the end of this weekend. You and BigA need to get on the ball and finish up so we can post the three finished sisters together... ;D

I don't know if I have a sleep problem or not...if I do, I've kind of gotten used to it I guess. I do however have a wife that is not at all shy about telling me I have a snoring problem...which equates to her having a sleep problem! ;D So I guess I do have a sleep problem after all...as you all know when the wife has a problem it's in our best interests to see that their problems take priority in getting resolved. So...resolving her sleep problem might require that I wear a strapped on head harness with a hose attached to nose plugs forcing air down my throat, instead of her wearing some soft spongy  ear plugs! ;D Whatever it takes to remain on her good side is what I'm resolved to do! ;)

I hated that yours broke...the wood must have been brittle in the spot where it broke. Maybe that spot had been near a knot or the wood was even stressed while still a tree. It was looking really good!

Pappy, sorry to hear about your bow.  If it's any comfort, it does give hope to us newbies who break our first attempts knowing that even a skilled bowyer like yourself will occassionally run across a piece of wood that refuses to be a bow.  Thanks for sharing.

Ya that's one of the main reasons I posted it,some think that they all turn out good but I can assure you they don't.I don't break as many as I use to but still break them now and then.Anyone that makes wood bow break them from time to time. That is why I have always told people just starting,
DON'T FALL IN LOVE WITH A PIECE OF WOOD. it can and will sometimes break your heart.  :)

and it should be ready to re tiller.I'll keep you updated on how it is going.I may have to change the name to one half of three of three.  ;) ;D

Well after some drying time I will be ready to go on with the tillering with the new limb.Hope to do that this weekend. It was somewhat of a challenge to get that hooked handle lined up but the shim I added to the side to center it worked out great,at least so far. ;) :) I'll keep you updated.BigA said last night that he is in the finishing stages on his ,so it looks like I will be the last to finish. O well it's
like I tell beginners, this ant a road race, slow and easy till you get to the finish line.Sometime you trip

and just needs a little more finish work. Greg's is finished and shooting good also.I have the sleeve
put on mine and tillered out to 51@22.I heat treated it and done some sanding.I am going to give
it a few days to rehydrate and then finish the tiller. Then all I will like is skins and Grip.I put new tips on this weekend also.We are getting there maybe another week or 2 and and we should be done.

It's really coming together well, and I'd bet she will be a good shooter. The tiller is already very close. Those cow horn tips are going to look good as well. A lot of work goes into a take-down from watching Pappy make several now...not to mention a snake bow takedown.

BigA is getting close to being finished with his, and she is going to be a beauty! The finish work is looking really good...the sinew job, skins, tips, and handle are all coming together to make a fine looking bow. She shoots really good too! ;)

turn out as snaky as BigA's and Greg's,the snaky limb didn't make the cut but I think they all turned out good enough to do what we like to do.Hunt. :)
