I was having a rough day trying to use some abo tools on some tuff chert yesterday and decided to change my plan and work with some easier rock. I pulled out a dacite preform that I made a few months ago and decided to take my chances and make a folsom out of it. I always dreamed of finding one of these points where I grew up in Wyoming and I always wondered how the heck our ancient brothers pulled it off. Well... I had my first go of it yesterday. It's not the greatest looking folsom point, but it made my day. ;D Here's the results. ;D

SAW what more could you ask for...VERY NICE
Curt

Dang fine! Is that a hand flute?
-
Looks like more than an "attempt" to me. Looks like you NAILED it!!! ;D
-
Thanks David, I was so happy with the first flute that I contemplated stopping while I was ahead :D
Thanks Curt, now that I have something to trade, I don't know if I can part with it! LOL
Thanks Timo, I used the smaller moose billet as a punch and then I hammered on it with the bigger moose billet. I rested the point of the leather wrapped preform against a leather wrapped stone anvil (one of the chert spalls I was working on) which was against my left thigh. The punch was against my right thigh. Each face took me 2 trys, and needless to say when it was all over I got to my feet and did a little dance!
Thanks Saw Filer ;D ;D

Good looking Folsom, it would look right at home in a fossilized bison vertebrae. Nice job fluting it!

Beautiful point :)

Dang Staver that's great! You must have been watching paleomanjim - that's the way he does it and has good results every time. I'm going to try that and other methods eventually.

Thanks everyone! I do need to give credit its due... YES Cowboy... you got me figured out... without high tech computers I would have never been able to pull it off with abo tools or otherwise. ;D I watched Paleomanjim's videos like a hawk and it's the only way that makes sense to me that our ancestors were able to make their folsom points living a nomadic lifestyle. It's simple (meaning that it's not complex) and yet effective. These tools are easy to find in the archaelogical record which kinda takes some of the mystery away from it. I would be hard pressed to believe that they were able to pull a fluting jig out of their breechclouts to get the job done! And... I either got extremely lucky or that's one great explaination of how our ancient brothers did it! Thanks Jim for showing me the way!! I can't wait to try it some more ;) Cowboy... show us your stuff when you get er done!! I know if I can do it then you definitely can!! ;) Joe H
