Title: I'm so going to make an atlatl!
Post by: Bushman452 on July 02, 2009, 12:13:32 pm
My grand-parents lease have a lot of good materials for making primitive equipment. And since deer are everywhere on their land I could start hunting them with an atlatl. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be illegal as long as I'm on private property.

Hmmm.....hunting deer with a spear is not something you want to risk (in most states)....you might get your license taken away.  On the upside, you can make a gigantic bow and say the atlatl is a gigantic arrow (just in case someone comes snooping around). ;D

It wouldn't fly here in TN. That's kind of odd isn't it, that some states won't let you hunt with a primitive (although amazingly powerful) weapon.

I used to make atlatls when I didn't live here. I've found that about 90% of success with one is making a dart with a proper spine. Tuning one is fairly easy. Good luck!

I live in TN. If you check the Hunting regs, an atlatl is not listed on the Prohibited Weapons list. It also is not listed on the Legal Weapons list. It is a gray area. I was cited last year for taking a deer with one of my atlatls, and it was dismissed in court for that very reason.

Wow, I was told by the conservation officer that if it isn't specifically listed as a legal weapon, then it would be illegal to hunt with. Like, air rifles are listed under legal weapons for small game, but air pistols or air shotguns would be illegal. But then again, they don't mention "in-line" muzzleloaders either, they say that's lumped in with "percussion cap" and is legal (even if it used electronic ignition)... I'm fairly new to this state but the regs seem very confusing. Seems to be up to the officer whether or not a weapon is legal or illegal.

Glad it worked out for you though! That's the first atlatl success story I've heard on whitetails.

I think you can do it in OK.
You can use it for hunting certain animals already allowed to be hunted with a spear, I think you can hunt hogs but I am not certain.

We need bumper stickers that say:

When Atlatls Are Outlawed
Only Outlaws Will Have Atlatls

I would talk to  the local warden. most I dont think would have a problem with it, that how I used to do before stone points were legal, tie a string on it and swear its a short bow,
