Title: Help
Post by: part Cherokee on July 05, 2009, 09:03:10 pm
oSiYo,
About 15 years ago i wanted to get into napping and i found some material that  napped like butter.Even though i had never made a single arrow head this stuffed napped so easy i made my first point that turned ou to be an unfluted clovis.
The material was a dark navy blue in color and was very smooth but was not shiney like obsidian.
Anyone know what im talking about?
I wanted to get some more and give it another go. Where can i get it.

Sounds like some of that stuff I picked up in Decatur,AL. Kinda bluish/blackish and needs no heat treat. Like you said - knapped like butter. I can't think of the name of it offhand but look around creeks, road cuts, jobsites. Next time I'm out there I'll be hunting some more of it up.

Probably some variety of Fort Payne chert if you found it locally. If you bought it from a dealer, may have been dacite, or hornstone.

Well then, your in the right spot ;D. Just go driving and find some, I wouldn't spend any money till I gave that local stuff a try. It's rounded nodules - kinda looks like old mud balls. Bust into one and get past that cortex - oooh, good stuff :).
