I think that yellow poplar would work just fine.. ;)

I think you could make a 5#@15" bow out of just about anything! Yes, poplar will work, but keep it wide and flat.

I always back kids bows with hickory or bamboo, mostly bamboo. Poplar is not a bow wood although you can make a bow from it. When there is a possibility of a failure that could injure a child I would use a bombproof material instead of poplar.

Jax........I would go with something that You can pick up at every Big Name Hardware Store....a Red Oak Board...back it with Silk....Canvas....or  Hickory Veneer....just Back it! Kids don't always follow directions....and even the best Built Poplar Bow will not stand up to being Tossed around (like DanaM's Bob Bow).....or being Overdrawn too many times....so for the Safety of the Children....I would surely Back it and make it out at least Red Oak....JMO

I wouldn't use it. Like El said red oak or hickory is better. Jawge
