Title: 48" Hickory Asiatic Self bow.
Post by: RyanY on August 19, 2009, 02:20:17 pm
So I made this a while ago trying to get to an asiatic looking design without horn or sinew and I think it came out pretty good. It is one solid piece of wood with the exception of support strips to keep the recurves static. It isn't totally finished but I haven't posted in a while so I thought I would show you guys this. It is hickory 48" long, approx. 40# @ 30". Limbs are about 1.125" wide. Draw is smooth until string angle with recurves increases near full draw. There is about 2.5" of unbraced set but I like to flex the limbs backwards a bit after I unstring it. I have another piece of wood waiting so I'll try and keep the limbs wider, up the draw weight, and loose some set. Pics were taken with my webcam so they're kind of crappy. Thanks for looking. (^_^)

Very nice little bow. 8)  I believe you captured the asiatic design with this bow. The tiller looks very good also. You got quite a substantial bend in this little hickory bow.  :o
One option that may help you with the set is to temper(heat treat) the belly. This will increase the compression strength and it should improve your next hickory bow.
  Welcome back!     Pat

HA! Thanks for all the comments already. Funny thing is, I did heat treat the belly! But I did it without inducing reflex and more for just to increase the compressive strength. I know what your saying though. Thanks again.

Thanks a lot guys. I really appreciate the comments. I too was amazed at the bend I was able to get from this piece of wood. OldBow, can I have more than one entry for selfbow of the month? Thanks again guys.

I'd be proud of that one for sure! That bow was a challenging venture, and looks like you accomplished it well and came away with some good experience to apply on your next one! Very good job!  ;)

That's a fine looking weapon, very cool. The linws and tiller look great.  I think you made the right decision about not adding reflex and stress to a selfbow that short with that long draw-that bit of set is a good safety valve. How does it shoot?

Looks very good Ryoon!  :)

How thick are the limbs, and is there any tapering in thickness.

There doesnt even appear to be a grip riser???

I'm curious also about the 'support strips' you mentioned.

What do they look like?

To me, your bow is the holy grail...short in length, long in power stroke!

Very nice looking bow. I would like to see the 30" draw picture though. That looks to be about a 24" draw. Justin

Ha I hope you're not kidding. That's at least a 28" draw bud.

That's at least a 28" draw bud.
I believe it...your draw hand is at least two inches past the edge of your mouth.

Could you get an even longer draw without the recurved tips?
Title: Re: 48" Hickory Asiatic Self bow.
Post by: RyanY on November 09, 2009, 06:53:37 pm
I don't think so. I understand your thinking Rhinegold but the reason recurved tips allow for a longer draw is because if the tips weren't recurved then when they get close to parallel at full draw you run the risk of having the string slip off. When the tips are recurved it takes away that part. Thanks for looking.

Well with this bow I didn't have to because with hickory and many other white woods you can use that first ring after the bark as the back. Also hickory can take growth ring violation more than most woods so its usually not necessary anyways. Thanks for looking.

No I was actually serious. I have certainly been wrong before, and I may be wrong this time. I was just making an educated guess. Here was my thinking. The average man's arm is 17" from elbow to fingertip. Your fingers are bent over so it would be a little less. The draw is a little less than one and a half times the distance from your elbow to your bent fingers. At 17" that would make it around 25 1/2". I don't really look at where people anchor because there is so much variation in form. Some guys roll their shoulder forward, some backward. Some guys use a straight bow arm, most like you bend it quite a bit. Or you could be exceptionally tall or just have long arms making it seem short.

Like I said, I could be very wrong, and I don't mean anything by it. I know that I quit drawing for pictures without using an arrow for reference because I was so busy thinking about the photo that I wasn't getting to full draw, and thought you might be in the same boat as me.

BTW It doesn't have to be all gussied up to be pretty, I like bare bows a lot. Ask the boys that have been around for years, I never used to  paint, dye, stain, or put any other "pretty" on any of my bows. Justin

I understand. I took the pic on my computer so I may not have gotten to full draw. I think I'll just put a few coats of polyurethane on it and maybe some tip overlays.

That is a totally cool bow. 48" drawing 30", damn. How does it shoot?
Title: Re: 48" Hickory Asiatic Self bow. UPDATE!!!
Post by: RyanY on November 13, 2009, 04:05:23 pm
I'm finally home for the weekend so right when I got home I clamped this bow straight to a board and heat treated it. It now draws around 60#@28" believe it or not. I'm drawing it to about 31" in this pic. It shoots way better even though it has quite a bit of string follow. Weight will probably come down after sanding but I'll try and reduce mass from the tips to try and keep performance up. I'm starting to really like this bow.

Blimey, that's a good advert for the properties of Hickory (and your skill as a bowyer).

(Re:- Use of 'blimey'
Many years ago when my kids were small we were visiting a country house/stately home or somesuch, it was late summer and they were burning the stubble off one of the fields. My two kids ran over, jumped up onto the gate and my little girl said "Gaw' blimey"
There was an American couple, (obviously on holiday) standing nearby, the woman turned to the man and said 'They really do say it!'
It made my wife and I smile, I felt like putting on my best Cockey accent and saying something like 'Gawd bless ya Mary Poppins'.)

First of all that bow is really cool. I'd have never thought you could get that much flex outta just wood. How well do you think it will hold up over time? I gotta buddy who has been wanting me to build one like that.

Post by: RyanY on November 14, 2009, 02:25:36 pm
Thanks guys.
Hickoryswitch - Although the limbs are under a lot of strain it looks as though there are no defects that would cause it to fail. The only thing I could think of would be a really low moisture content but seeing as how this is hickory I don't think that will be a problem. Hopefully it will hold up pretty well.

I'm curious, the way hickory behaves, how about an unbraced photo after it is pulled to 31"?
