Tim, figure out what you want/need in a possibles bag and make a pattern. I use poster board(paper) for patterns. The back and flap will be one piece of leather and the front will be the basic shape and size of the finished bag(minus the stitching seam). Between the two will be a gusset or the sides and bottom of the bag. With soft leather you will stitch the bag inside out and reverse it when done. By doing this it will get the rigidness it needs to hold it's shape. If you want a pocket inside you can add an extra panel to the front piece or to the back. Any raw edges should be rolled and sewn or put in a running stitch to prevent the leather from stretching.
Another thing that is important when working with leather is the stretch factor. Leather stretches more and easier across the hide and stretches less from head to tail. Use the non-stretch direction across openings and edges like the front flap and pockets and cut straps from head to tail for minimal stretch.
Osage medallions make for a nice closure button ( ;) ) on the flap with a thong attached to the front seam to hold the flap down.

thanks pat i knew you would give me some help i figure i just go at it i kind had in mind what you said.

I have always incorporated a stick sewn to the back of the bag that the straps are tied to. Like a plains style quiver. Helps keep the bag's shape.
-
i got one made and i thought bout a stick cause it is made out of soft tanned cow hide and real floppy, thanks i will do that.

You already have one with a red eyed coy-dog face on it! ;D

8) I'll make them one for $500! ;D

Woodstick,
Don't forget to sow it together insideout. This hides and protects the stiching. Then work it to turn it rightside out. Happy sewing!

Hi,
Here is the one I made this year and I am now adding a quiver to the back of it for 3D shoots.

I've made it so I can take the knife and put it on the outside when camping or 3D shooting and then inside when I am out and about on the street trying to get to the wilds.

And this is as far as I've got on putting the quiver on it....
First the back of the bag

Then the quiver on top.

Then with some arrows in to show you what it will be like....

-
Cromm,
I like your design with the loops, looks like a very functional bag
-
what does possible bag mean? and how is it different from a purse?
-
Hi Woodstick,
I followed Pat's advice, and here's a link to my first bag:

Radius-
In the Mountain Man era it was common for a trapper or a hunter to carry your most basic posessions in a small bag called a possibles bag,
Ammunition, knives, food, firestarter etc might be carried in a simple bag or purse carried on the shoulder
-
Radius, the only difference in a possibles bag and a purse is in the attitude! ;D

In the era those were common, pants didn't generally have pockets, so they kind of held everything that you would carry in your pockets.
