ok this is a hickory war bow that i am hoping to shoot soon i made it out of a board so it is not a true war bow but a start. i have a questions on a piece of the wood. the first picture of the wood show has me worried about it splintering off and hurting me when i shoot i circled it in black

Is that the back, or belly?
-
it is on the belly of the bow and is about 9 to 10 inches long.
-
Any bow I have seen break, break on the tension side (back) first, so the exploding bits generally fly away from you. Hickory is tough, It would not worry me.
-
If that's the belly side, it should be fine.
-
ok i got it finally scraped down and now am ready to add nocks i don't have horn so what would you shugest i do? if you need some pics just ask the dimentions are 6' long, 5/8 at nocks and 1 1/4" at handle.
-
I dont think you'll need them on Hickory? you could try some hard wood overlays if your worried about the string cutting into the wood.
-
Worked witt swedis on this bow last weekend. He now has Honrn overlays on the nocks and the bow is now at 45# at 25" draw. He has worked this bow down all the way with hand tools. He is patient to the n-th degree. I look forward to seeing the finished product.

well guys it is almost done now i have some pics for you ;D really excited it shoots well and is fast i think anyway tell me what you think. also would you advise toasting the belly it has about a 1 1/4" set.

For a more authentic warbow style you need to be drawing it further, more to the ear.
Generally warbow drawlengths are 30 inch or more (but it depends how tall you are.
But please don't risk overdrawing it on my say so.... (having just smashed my last bow)
I don't know if Hickory would take it.. I think it only really Yew or laminated bows which will make a real high weight warbow.
(I'm sure someone will chip in a set me straight if, talking out my backside)

I gather from the 2 finger draw that it didn't quite make a warbow's draw weight?
-
ya i got it at 45# @25" i am already thinking about the next one and am looking for a good yew staff now that i learned a lot off this project
-
From what little I know about warbows, that tiller look pretty dang good. So what if it is 45#, fun shooting. The bow I'm working on now, not a warbow, I'm wanting it to be around 45#.

I'm sure you did learn a lot. You also did a fine job tillering the bow out.
