Title: 09 mule deer
Post by: Ryan_Gill_HuntPrimitive on October 11, 2009, 12:40:58 pm
Shot my first deer of the season a couple days ago. no one around for a picure so i had to take it on my phone and have my wife email it to me. I was in a creek bottom when a bunch of deer came though all avoided my trail except this one and another. i shot her at about 12 yards on the ground with my 65# osage selfy, cane arrow and stainless trade point i hammered out. complete pass through but never found the arrow.  i will admit it certainly wasnt my best shot ever but i got lucky and clipped the far lung which brought her down. and i also shot another ruffed grouse while tracking her out, was tracking through some hawthorn when i ruffy flushed infront of me and only flew about 15 yards and landed again. i pulled up and shot and had 2 kills for the day.

Nice Shooting Ryan.....Must be nice to be able to shoot a Mulie Doe.....We are overrun with them....dead all over the Highways....but the State will not allow the Harvesting of a Mulie Doe.....go figure

damn dude, that's awesome!  I've always wanted to kill a mule deer with my bow.  I think of them as the majestic deer of the west....but even after living in Oregon for 3 years I never even got a shot at one.  They are wily and tough animals to hunt.  Congrats dude, you've accomplished a goal I've always wanted to see myself accomplish.  Maybe...hopefully,  I will someday.

thanks a lot guys, yeah i really love it out here....i just need some land to start building my own cabin. the mule deer does are not overly difficult to get out here, but the problem is they are usually in herds so there are a lot more eyes to stop and look at you. hunting with a muzzleloader would probably be cake, but getting in the magic 20 yards can be difficult at times but i am figuring out new tricks all the time.  but when you draw on one they usually stop and look at you for about 2 seconds giving you a shot...unlike a whitetail that is outa there at first movement.....but the whitetails are easier to pattern. a couple more years and i should be pretty efficient at it!- Ryan

Oh yeah...I forgot to tell ya...make some room in the living room....I'm coming out there.  Didn't know that, did ya?? I'm gonna sleep on the floor so I can experience what you've been experiencing!  Just don't mind me....I cook my own food, clean my own dishes, and if I accidentally pee on the toilet seat I wipe it up!  I just hope you and wife don't mine my bucket of rocks and 200 bowstaves piled in the corner!!!  YEAH!!!   ;) ;D  ;D

thanks guys

tawster- sry i overlooked your question. it was on the ground, no blind, just standing behind a bush where they cross the creek. you can hear them coming down the bank so i knew to get the bow up and come to half draw. when they come into view they are actually passed me offering a quartering away shot. i have also found that deer dont look behind them for danger as much as infront of them so if you draw your bow once they walk past you 5 or 10 yards you are less likely to be noticed....that technique has work for me on numerous occasions.

Fascinating. Where I hunt the deer are so skittish (too many dogs around)... not sure that would work for me at that location. Good info though. Thanks.
