Title: Anyone around my area?
Post by: dogleg on October 13, 2009, 02:23:16 am
I live in Eua Claire, Wisconsin, about 2 hours east of the twin cities.  Only just getting interested in knapping, and have absolutely no clue.  Is there anyone in my area, or relatively close, who could clue me in on just what may be around for me to pound on and mangle? ;)  Also, apart from watching, in a decidedly bewilderred fashion, as others turn out great looking stuff on youtube, I've never found a beginner's guide to this.  Any suggestions?  Thinking of checking out the local glass places for thick stuff to try pressure flaking, etc.  but would appreciate any guidance. ???

Thanks for any help ...

dogleg I'm over in the central Up not  real close but our geology is very similiar so native knappable rock is slim pickings.
One place you may want to look into is Hixton, WI the NA's quarried a silified sandstone there, if ya find some I would save it till your a good knapper as
its about as rare as feathers on a frog :D Start with glass, go find a window company and ask for the garbage 1/4" plate glass.

Thanks Dana, Hixton's pretty close, and I go that way for work, occasionally.  Have to take a look, down that way.   :)
Seen some of that on YouTube.  Really cool stuff.  I agree, something for when I know what I'm doing.

Sailordad,

Good to meet you.  Seems I have somebody in the wife's family from St. Cloud, but damned if I can remember, at the moment.

SailorDad,

I can hange with voices, as long as three out of four are still saying, "Don't shoot !!"   >:D

If it looks like I'll get up that way, I'll drop a line, and see shat you're up to.

theres another guy on here, goes by Gopher, hes near the twin cities area.
he just started knapping too.

just to let ya know, last year in feb they had a knapp in in milaca mn
it was the second annual cryo knapp in,hope they are having a third annual next feb.
if so you should go.
i went last year just to check it out.it was right after i got into knapping and didnt know what to expect.
this time i plan on taking my gear with and sitting down knapping with the others.
there were some good knappers there and then there were some really good kanppers there.
one was Jim Redfern, master knapper.hes so good that just by watching and listening to him for about 1.5 hrs i had learned things that
i didnt even realize untill recently.

                                                          peace,
