Title: School Talent Show
Post by: Kegan on December 10, 2009, 06:43:24 pm
Well, I signed up for the talent show to round-off my senior year... doing an archery exhibition! I made a point to talk to the principal earlier this summer, make sure everythings cleared with him (he was excstatic about the idea). I need some help though.

First, I'm using a home made "curtain" as a back drop (about 5' wide by 7' high) for my blunt arrows, but am unsure how I'm going to hang/stand it up. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Second, I have five minutes to do my act. So far, I know I want to do some wing shots- going from a 10" disc and hopefully finishing with a Lifesaver or jug cap or something. I also figured on doing a mirror shot, shooting behind me, and some out of position shots. Which leaves me needing a few more quick and flashy tricks? Not quite sure if I'll be able to do a candle shot or ricochet :P I need ideas to start practicing.

Thanks in advance- I'm getting excited ;D!

It is probable that the school has some sort of stand for their theater program that could hold the curtain.  Or hand a cable or rope from one wall to another wall and drape a heavy curtain or a piece of carpet as the back stop.
Start looking at all the youtube videos of trick shooting you can and go from there.  Have a great time!

I have someone roll two targets from both right and left direction in quick succession drawing and shooting quickly..... foam targets with balloons on them are great for four quick shots that everyone can hear and see... also two quick shots with blunt fluflu arrows at candles gets their attention.. aim small miss small..Hawk

Kegan, 2" pvc pipe should work for a stand.  Make the base legs about 4 ft. long with a T in the middle the up rights with a L on top.  Any part that you don't glue together, I'd drill a hole in the joint and run a nail through it to prevent the stand from twisting and collasping.  You might need to tie a rope to both up rights at the bottom to prevent them from pushing away from each other with the weight of the curtain/carpet.

Thanks all! My dad has some whit pine boards laying aorund in the back we can rip and make itno a frame. It'll most likely be pretty heavy, but at least the curtain shouldn't fall. I like the idea of PVC though.

So far, here's the routine. Now just to practice and time it all.

1. Out of Position Shots
 - "Indian Crouch"
 - Turning around backwards
 - Belly Shot
2. Snap a Pencil in Half
3. Shoot the Flame from a Candle
4. Mirror
5. Ricochet
6. Wing Shots
 - Balloon first
 - Plastic Container Lid (~7")
 - Clay Pidgeon/Small Plastic Lid
 - Life Saver

Thoughts?

exactly what i was gunna say. you must be one heck of a shot man!

have you ever seen the coke bottle opener shot? where you put a church key on the top of a coke bottle, lay the bottle on it's side, and shoot the chuch key, opening the bottle and letting it pour into a glass.

i know that one is kinda complicated, but if you could have it set up before hand, im sure you could hit it, and it would be cool!  ;D

I've seen the coke bottle! I like it, but with only five minutes and no bottle opener, I think I'll have to let that one go!

And my shooting isn't that great, but I'm getting there. Most of the stuff is only five pace shots ;D

Well, my frame fell apart right before the curtain opened on my act. So we bandaged it up with duct tape and Bucci's drill (he's a fellow senior but he basically runs the school :D). Anyway, so I was pretty frazzled and what not and wasn't shooting my best. People still clapped, but misses aren't that impressive!

So I go through: normal shot, kneeling, backwards (missed the first), foot shot, mirror (barely caught the target), behind my head... and then the arials.

The first was a 12" ice cream container lid. Big, easy to hit. But when the arrow smacked it everyone was impressed. Next came a coffee can lid, about 7". Same thing. Finally the ping pong ball. Missed once. Twice. I looked at the audience, smiled and motioned "1 more". Sent it flying:)

In the end I got first place. I'm just glad I actually hit that dang ping pong ball :D

No pictures, and I only have a video of practice at the moment... and it won't load on photobucket >:(

Kegan,
That is really cool. I can only give you ideas about what I would do in your situation. I would consider taking the audiance outside and demonstrate how to hit the broad side of a barn !!LOL Seriously, good luck we all will look forward to the video.

Thanks everyone :). I gotta say, it was a bit nerve racking, but not nearly as bad as some of the other things I've done in front of audiences. I'd definately do something like that again, given the chance :)

Good work, Kegan.  I saw a guy do an archery show in school when I was a kid and I was really impressed.  Heck, look where it has led me!  Makes you wonder how many of your fellow students are some day going to be shooting bows, making bows, hunting with bows, etc.

JW- Afterwards my parents were telling me how excited some of the younger kids in the audience had been. I have to admit, that really put a smile on my face ;D!

Kegan,
I guess I hadn't had my coffee yet when I scanned this thread this morning, didn't see you already let fly. Way to go! 1st place and a ping pong ball? WOW, you have guts and skills. Nice doings. You should be proud. You have more guts than I ever had.

Thanks Chasing Crow :). Word around school was I could hit bottle caps with my longbow. I figured it's my senior year, better at least prove it to more than a few friends :D.

Wow, way to go Smooth...... 8)  The third time is the charm. ;)  I think I could've hit the ping pong ball on the 2nd shot at least.
But then after the first shotgun blast, they probably wouldn't let me take a second shot...... :o  Sometimes people can just be that way you know...... ::)  Well congrats again, and let it slip that you were going to use an aspirin instead of a ping pong ball, but you used the whole bottle up during practice, and you couldn't find the two that you missed, and you forgot to get more on the way to the auditorium. ;)  That should get the ol rumor mill going full speed...... ;D  Way to go Kegan, that is great.

Thanks again everyone ;D :D I don't think I need to brag about aspirin, everyone seemed thoroughly impresed I just hit the ping pong ball! Even better, there were several witness during rehearsal where I hit a ping pong ball and got it lodged on the fletchings. There weren't that many people there... but it's nice to show off in front of pretty girls once in a while ;)

damn right.
my buddie (who went with me to MOJAM) kept bragging that i could hit a hanging tennis ball hanging on a string 30 yards away, and a couple girls called him on it, so he brought in a video, which they still didn't believe.
finally they insisted on coming over to see, and I said, "okay, how about i cut the string its hanging on from 30 yards away"? I didn't mention that it is actually easier for me ::) since i find the elevation at that range to be an issue, more so than the windage.
cut it on the second shot (hit it lightly on the first)  so they come over every once in awhile to watch us shoot, and have even tried it themselves :o
this was with a judo though, not a broadhead or field point.......

congrats Kegan, that is really really cool. I'm sure i would gotten stage fright and missed every time, how did you keep your focus?
in my school they would call the cops for me suggesting the idea :o

Nice shooting Zander! I asked the prinicpal about it over the summer when I dropped off my senior project- he's a really nie guy and really liked the idea (actually shot target archery back when he was in highschool too). Then I cleared it with the teacher in charge of the Talent show (who knew me since I was a freshman and is also the mother of one of my good friends), and as soon as she saw that it was safe in rehearsal everyone seemed alot more okay with the idea. As for focus, that's the only way I know how to hit anything moving :D. All fo the stationary shots were ...erhem... up for grabs :-X :)
