Title: California Style Shortbow Completed (Pics)
Post by: rileyconcrete on December 22, 2009, 05:42:41 pm
Hey guys. I have had this bow posted earlier for help with draw length tiller etc.  After talking with a few guys I decided to leave it alone (after a little tiller mod) and this is what it is now.

It is elm backed with two good layers of sinew, glued with knox gelatin. The nocks are cut then bent and wraped with sinew.

The bow is 38" n/n.  Draws about 18".  Not sure on the poundage but it is stout.

I painted in a california design useing red and black acrylic paint that I heavily diluted to get lighter shades. The handle was wrapped with a hemp type string.

I will have to post pictures in several posts.

Thanks for looking.

John you are right.  I have juniper limbs spotted that I am gonna get for some more bows.  Right now I have a Chokeherry log split and drying that will make a short bow also.  I read somewhere that the paiutes or banoch indians used chokecherry for their bows.  I am gonna do some more research and see what size, but yeah these bows are awsome.

P.S. I will try to get a weight tomorrow

HEy Riley,

HAve you been raiding my Smithsonian photos??  Cause I saw a bow painted almost exactly like that in The Smithsonian!!!  Except the stripes were dark blue instead of black, but it looked identical to yours.  Great job on that one!

Billy,

Actually I saw a few sketches from a Jim Hamm book that had California designs, and I used that as a reference.  I did mine a little different than that one but close. I like the simple clean look of it.  Nice to know I recreated a piece of history. Thats pretty awsome.
Thanks for the post.

Cool bow!  When you say the knocks are cut then bent, what exactly do you mean?

a small kerf cut is implemented to bend the tips

Coyote Pup,
aznboi is correct.

I grooved a small kerf in the back of the bow at the nock. I then heated them and bent them up using a little heat and pliers. One of them actually broke almost all the way off and I thought it may be fatal to the bow. But with a good couple wraps with sinew and time to dry, I couldnt even tell that the wood didnt actually grow like that. It is very strong. that sinew is good stuff!!!
Thanks for the comments!

Blacktail was asking what the weight of this bow was. Well I had to borrow a scale from my dads shop and I was surprised at the actual weight.

I was thinking around 50#.

But to my surprise this little bow pulls 68# at 18".

Man I love these little bows.
