Title: My TN Classic project BOOM!!!
Post by: FlintWalker on January 30, 2010, 07:37:17 pm
Can't decide whether to splice these or make a take down.  Anyway, I hope to get her going pretty soon  and try to get it finished up by the Classic.  If it holds up I've got a set of MONSTER copperheads waiting for it.
I cut these 1 year ago and they've been roughed out ever since and stored in my house.  I think it's about time I did something with them...especially since I haven't made a bow in almost a year. :-[

Cold and white! :D
Yea Eddie, they've been here before.  I've cleaned them up, chased a ring and narrowed them up a little since you saw them last.
I plan to take them down to Pappys weekend after next and see if I can get GregB to help me splice them. My saw's not good enough for the task and I'm not either.

It looks like an awesome project to me. I think I would go for the takedown. It is a lot easier to haul around and baby it so the bow/snakeskins don't get damaged.

She'll look just like a snake after those skins go on, good luck with your project.  I just posted an ERC from wood that I got from you last year at the classic. Thanks again.

dang Shannon... tell me the month you are planning on posting that beauty so I can not even bother making a bow to compete for the BOM that month... I gotta disagree about the takedown sleeve making it easier to protect the finish on your bow.   I just made a takedown and whenever I break it down the limbs are always banging into each other causing more scuffs than any of my full length bows.  JMO....   It WOULD make a great takedown though...   :)  -josh

It's not a bow just yet.  Still lots to do before then.  As much as I'd love a bow from this wood I almost have the feeling it's too good to be true.
We'll see...

Well dang Shannon, if'n you're scared of the  billets i will gladly take them off yer hands just so you don't have to worry anymore...  >:D   ;D

just kidding.  If you only put HALF as much effort into those  billets as you do some of the points I've seen you knock out recently it is gonna make one HECK of a bow.   :)  Good luck can't wait to see it shooting!  -josh

Shannon, Is that part of the snaky staves you brought to the Classic last year? I think you had or said you had billets from the lower part of the same tree. I got one of the staves from David. Maybe I'll bring it to the Classic for some help setting it up. It is still like it was when I got it.  I'll try to chase a back ring before then.

;D Hopefully they won't still be billets by then.

Yea pat, these are the ones.  I got two sets of these right at the bottom of the tree and about 5 more staves a little higher up. David knight got a couple, you and Eddie got one and I kept the one fer myself. If I get these together and shooting by the Classic, I might just bring the sister stave to yours and we'll work on them together. ;)

Should make a gnarly bow, and you're the guy to do it if anyone can. I've got one almost that snaky that I got from Cowboy a couple years ago that I need to work on. Still haven't jerked a shaving off that stave I got from you last year, either.

Get after it Son! Splicing is easy just make sure you keep the billets square with the table while your cutting. I make a templet on the computer and print it out then cut it out and glue it on the area to be cut. This ensures your cuts will fit perfect.

Well...things ain't looking good for the snake bow :(
I got her spliced together this weekend while I was at Pappys.
After I got home I started thinning the limbs down some, just trying to get them floor tillered.
The very first time I flexed them I could hear a little "tearing" sound :o
I hadn't bent it 2" when I heard this. So I pushed on it again and heard the same sound.
I knew one of the limbs had a questionable spot in it and aftr looking a little closer, I don't have any faith that it'll hold together.
The first picture is of the crack without any stress.
The second picture is with it flexed maybe 2". She's starting to open up pretty good...NOT TOO GOOD :(
If that crack opens up that much at 2" of bend...It's DOOMED >:D

It would have made a pretty one, but I'm not putting much more effort into it.
The sad part is that I already cut out some raw hide to match the limbs and now it's wasted :(

Shannon, I have seen that alot of real snakey wood. Can't be helped. Next time?

I had a piece once that was destined to be the snakey of all snakeys..It done the same thing. I tried my best to save it.It layed in the corner for a few years,I just couldn't bring myself to cutting it up.Finally did.

Pat, the other limb is in good shape.  I may donate it to Pappy for one of his projects.
Yea ya'll, it stinks...  But I kinda expected this from the get go :-\

It's just wood and I learned a long time ago to not get attatched to quick ;)

I got a nother'n almost as snakey and it's in good shape ;D

Look on the bright side...I learned how to splice.

Been a long time since I've had so much yellar dust on the floor in the basemant. :D   I grabbed my other snakey stave and went to work on it a little while ago.  She ain't as snakey as the other one, but at least it made it through a little floor tillering without cracking ::)
This piece looks much more sound than the other one. It's also a right handed stave (I knew that other one was wrong from the get go ::))
I'll get it on a form and iron out some of the wooptie doos, then proceed with a little tillering in a few days.

Here's a shot of it beside the junk one. It's the one on the left.

Thats to bad Shannon. Looks like you might of violated the longitudinal grain a little when you roughed it out. Hope the stave works out for ya.
Title: Re: My TN Classic project
Post by: FlintWalker on February 15, 2010, 09:54:43 am
I don't believe it'll work Pappy. The farther I flexed it, the more it just wanted to rip open, and I hadn't flexed it over 3 inches at the most :-\

Ryan that picture is of the belly side and you're right, it does look violated.  On the back of the bow the longitudal grain has  no runout.

Well, I rolled in from work this evenin' and lit in on'r again...No not my wife ;D  She's at work. That's why i'm getting to work on this bow 8)

I scraped and flexed and scraped and flexed till it felt right, then pretty much just braced it :o
It was tough to do...even with a stringer.  I know some people say not to jump right in so fast, but I screw up more when I mess with a long string.   When I get one bending enough to brace it...I brace it.
All in all, she ain't sitting too bad.   I need to get the string over just a touch, and one limb has a little more reflex than the other one.  I think I'll get her bending a few inches befoe I mess with that though. Ya never know what a little scrapin'll do fer it.
So far so good. The other one dodn't make it this far.

I evened up the brace a bit and rounded off the back a little more.  I think the wood's a little damp yet, so a few days in the hot box should do it some good.   I'm not aiming for a bunch of reflex, but I don't want it to be a noodle either.

If it even survives I'll be happy, and simple straight profile would just be icing on the cake.

After 4 days in the hot box it lost a total of 15 grams of moisture.  About 36 hours of that was at 120 degrees and 20% humidity. The rest of the time was 100 degrees.
I couldn't help but scrape on it a little more this evening though.   I got it out to around 20" of draw without breaking it, so I figure I'm about 18" better than the other one. ;D

This thing is making my eyes cross though.  One way it looks hinged, the other way it don't.  It's that way on both limbs :-\  I reckon I'm just gonna have to hit the middle ground on this one.
It's ben so long since I've tillered a bow, I think I've forgot how.
Here's a few pictures of it at 18" I think it's hitting about 40# right there.

In all these pictures the top image is of the same side.

I think you're right Ryan.  I quit on it fer tonight and just put it back in the hot box.
Next time I work on it I'll start narrowing the outer limbs and work on getting from mid limb out bending more.
I also need to pull one or both tips a little to get the string on the handle a little more.

Shannon, the one thing I have learned about building snakes:(I don't mess with them much, I leave them up to you pro's) be sure and flip flop it alot while seeing tiller changes. The outside curves always show up to my eyes, giving a stiffer than, appearance. I see it the same way everyone here has posted. Mids out.

Steady on son. ;)
Title: Re: My TN Classic project She's bending!!!
Post by: FlintWalker on February 19, 2010, 09:51:36 pm
It ain't broke.......yet ;D
She did started making some ticking sounds on me this evening though. :o  I looked and looked for any sign of a splinter and just couldn't find anything.  That was at 20"...It's 49# @ 23" right now and I've not heard anything for a good while now.  I did reshape the string grooves though. That could have been it. :-\
I went ahead and narrowed the outer limbs and rounded off the corners of the back a little more, as well as a lot of scraping from mid limb out.
It's holding its shape fairly well considering I didn't start with much reflex.  Right off the string the tips are about 1/4" behind the handle and after a few minures, they sit about 3/4" ahead of it.
I'll get her out another inch or two tonight, then bend the tips a tad to get the string tracking a little better.   If all goes well, I should have her out to 27" tomorrow. 8)

Man that sucks. It is sure hard to follow grain when it is twisting and turning like that. I followed the grain on the back on one only to have it blow because the back and belly didn't even come close to matching and the side splintered like that.

Sorry about that, look at the good side, now you have another limb for the take down. ;) :)
Good attitude,it's just wood, like I said you never fall in love with a piece of wood or sometimes
you will get your heart broke a long with the wood. :) But man that sure would have been a pretty one.  :(

I'll bring the crooked one you gave me to the Classic and see if I can break it. Get ya some sleeves and make a takedown.
