Title: Spontanously Disassembled (Pignut RIP)
Post by: gmc on January 31, 2010, 06:48:36 pm
I should have taken a friends advice and went rabbit hunting today. Instead, thought I'd finish tillering a little 60 inch Hickory that I'd been working with over the past month now. The bow was holding most of its reflex, the tiller looked great, almost done, and just when I hit that final 28'' mark on the tiller tree this happen. No need to call in the CSI team because I know exactly what happen. Although you can't see it now, I did set the bow back about an inch and in the process put a clamp mark dead center of the handle. That's where it blew. After about 10 mins. when I stopped crying it was pretty funny that it still had the string on it so thought I'd take a few pictures. This was number 37 over the past year and half and I think its time to let this rest for awhile.

Man that really sucks, bigtime >:( Looks like ya had the tiller really good (even pressure) for that thing to let go along it's entire length.

Yes it was quite spectacular. I took the string off and just placed all the slivers back into place. There was only on little piece missing, its probally stuck in the ceiling in the garage. I haven't had the heart to make it back to ground zero yet to check out the rest of the scene.

El, yes, things were pretty tight in that area.  :o

The way it split, it appears to have been some straight grained wood. So have you decided yet; tomato stake or firewood?

My vote is with the majority - first glance looks like sculpture to me. Amazing that the clamp fractured it to the point of failure ??

looks to me like it ws overly dry and seperated at the rings
i have a pignut that did that just on the very back layer of wood
mine was just getting first brace when it let loose, took about 8 inches of wood from one limb
just the nicest thinest layer of wood too,it was even translucent

Sounds like a good idea, either that or ducktape.

The bow was at 8%, just a little wetter than I normally tiller Hickory to.

Sailordad,
I don't use a mositure either, just a humidity ga. with a temp calculation over time, EMC.

Shannon,
I have made several bows from that same tree. First issue that I had with it not really understanding the term you are using.

Jawage,
The handle was working a little on this bow, could have been longer but have made them much shorter with no issues.

That sure is the way to do it if your gonna break one 8)  I'm surprised hickory did that to you though.  I got away with carving a turtle in the center-back of one of mine.

But it was an issue with this bow IMHO. When you under build you take your chances. :) Jawge
