Title: Finished Hackberry (Finally)
Post by: KShip85 on January 31, 2010, 09:48:23 pm
Ok, well you all have seen this one from the side a couple times and I decided I am done scraping on it.  Might not be perfect but it has shot fairly decently with me for the most part.  Just a hair under 67 1/2 inches NTN pulling 75 lbs at 30.5 inches.  This stave had about 3 inches of deflex in it before I started and I decided to leave it and just recurve the tips a smidge.  Leather handle with leather lacing and the back side's finish showed up as it dried (I think as a result of drying without exposure to sun light, as those that dried outside for a couple days are an even tan-ish color) and is covered with  rubbed in minwax antique oil finish.  Belly toasted just a little as I was afraid of scorching because it was one of the first I have tried, man does this stuff smell good when its toasting!  I was pleased with this stuff and have got a pile of it to keep me busy as I continue to cut more wood to try.  Thanks for looking all!!

Kip

Looks great!!  Tiller looks great and I love how you flipped the tips up a little bit.  I just toasted my Elm bow and I really like the way it smelled too... Kinda like popcorn...   ;D  -josh

NICE!!!! Wild looking back - nice tiller - all good !! I made only one Hackberry, and really liked the way it responded to tools. I don't think we have any in NY. 75# is pretty stout - bet it really thumps 'em out there. Nice work.

Thanks for all the compliments everyone!  This bow making business sure is addicting, seems like if I'm not scraping, cutting, or splitting then I am looking for the next piece of wood to turn into a bow.  I do love how the back coloration appeared on this one and the next time I cut hackberry I am going to dry it out of the sun to see if it will repeat the same thing.  Thanks again for looking!
