This one was inspired by James Parker's Horse bow that won Lam. BOY As you might recall I posted that my wife said "I want one like that" Somehow I knew this was going to be a daunting task. I had hoped to have it ready for Valentines day. However I ended up redoing the tips three times to arrive with this.
So here is LuLyns new bow. She is 52" tip to tip Boo Backed Boo belly with mountain mahogany static recurves. The handle section is Fiddle back maple with a paddock accent stripe. I've only done a half dozen laminates and never one like this so there were several first time events. Here is the list, First Sythian style laminate, first freehand accent stripe handle, first static re-curves, First centering string groves on the curves, First Boo backed Boo, First time using a rubber band form for glue up, First string ;D
LuLyn still hasn't shot it, so hopefully tomarrow we will get some full draw pics. I have not put it on the scale since the last tip change so stats will follow

The handle section was such nice grain I couldn't get myself to cover it up so this was my compromise I still may need to insert a rest but going to see how see dose off the hand first.

-
Stunning!
-
Let me be the first to say it's just okay...but you can do better.
NOT! ;) This is an amazing weapon. I like especially the way you wrapped the handle to show off the wood grain. The photos are excellent, as well.
I thought your recent yew bow was the finest work you could do, and then you went and posted this. Thanks for sharing this with us. We are all richer for seeing your work.

-
Thanks for all the awesome compliments. Lulyn really likes it and she got to try it out a little today. However when we were going to get a full draw pic she drew it back and we heard a tick sound. After a close look it appears to be trying to lift a small splinter. Not real sure, I can see a small crack in the finish that I haven't seen before. I'm going to take a closer look and may have to do a repair to that spot. Here is a not quite full draw for now. Lulyn said sorry she wasn't all the way back, it made her a little nervous hearing the sound. We are hoping for best and will keep you informed.

Good luck repairing this bow. It deserves a long and happy life.
Wooden bows can be a metaphore for life. It can be fleeting, and short lived. I hope this one shoots for many years.

-
That is a rad bow Keenan, I wish to make one.
-
sorry to hear about the splinter bro...but,how much draw weight did you get out of the stick and how much draw...tell sister, its OK about not drawing it all the way...at least she got the limbs to flex unlike some one with there yew bow ;D ;D...just pulling your leg keenan...john
-
Thanks guys, I think it's going to pull through but I'm going to do some emergency surgery befor it's a real problem. ::)
-
that has GOT to be my least favorite sound in the world *TICK*. I am glad you caught the problem early so it can be fixed... What a beautiful bow. :)
-
DAMN DUDE!!!!!!!!!!
-
Thanks Josh and Jamie,
The Tick that we heard was a very small splinter and the repairs are done and went very well. I actually think it came out better with the matching wraps. I'll post some pics tomarrow and a better full draw with Lulyn cranking it back.
I shot several rounds through it today and it did well. ;D

Keenan
I'm now inspired to build a Sythian style bow because of your excellent thread . Could I ask if you could describe the cross sectional profiles of the bow?
-
excellent craftsmanship, beautiful bow!!
-
Thanks Dragon.
Thank you Horace. James Parker (Robustus) Is the man to ask about These type bows. he is a great guy and has way more experience with these styles then I do.
Lulyn has been working allot the last few days so hopefully tomarrow we will get her out shooting it some more and get a better full draw. The modifications came out great. i shot her some more today and it's sound this time. ;D
-
That is very cool Keenan. You put that bamboo through some pretty tight curves, and I bet its a blast to shoot..
-
A very inspiring bow!
-
Went to a rendezvous over the weekend and this one got drawn to far back and let go on the limb that had the splinter lift. really bumbed Lulyn but I assured her that the next will be better. :(
-
R.I.P.
Sorry Keenan, that was a wonderful bow!
-
Dang what a bummer Keenan :'( So it goes with wood bows.
Can you bring that to the classic anyhow so I can take a look at it? I really would like to see that one up close.
-
Well that ,,,,, you know what I'm thinking. :(
-
I am sorry Keenan, that was one beautiful bow. :'(
-
I'm sorry to hear that Keenan. I know how that feels after putting so much work into a bow.
Did the limb come completely apart?
-
Sorry to hear that...!
-
sir, i agree with everybody else. the bow was a fine example bow art. if i had made that bow, i would be too ashamed to draw it. some things are just too beautiful to alter even after creation. wonder if the creator ever felt this way?
-
Well that plain sucks Keenan :(
-
Thanks guys She was pretty bummed and made at me for even having her bow out there with a string on it ::) My Bad definitely and I felt bad for the guy that pulled it. He felt really bad and it wasn't his fault either it was just made for a real short 24" draw and it's easy to surpass that in a hurry. If any are to blame it's me. I have to get another done soon. She is fired up about horse back archery and already practicing the steps.
-
That a Bummer for Sure Keenan.....but anyone that has ever been around Primitive Bows....Knows....that you don't pick one up and just Draw it....never....without permission...and asking the Draw Length of it....man that must havebeen Heartbreaking for Your Wife...that was an awesome Bow........so you better put your nose to the Grindstone...and Git Er Done....before She's Chompin at the Bit......... ;D
-
Sorry to hear that. That's a fine looking bow. Looking at the picture, you could be around Flagstaff. That's the kind of terrain we have here.
-
hate to hear that about your bow, ???,,go for another one.............. :)
-
try to repair to look complete and hang it on the wall. bummer about the break, but I am sure you will make another one soon and learned a lot from this one.
-
NO WAY! It was a beutiful bow Keenan. Now you have to build another.
-
Bummer, that was a real beauty. Well, on the bright side, any excuse to get started on another one works for me.
-
I feel for you. Not to long ago I made a 40 inch osage backed with sinew, shot about a hundred arrows out of it then BAM! explosion.
I learned from my mistake.
Good Luck on the next one.
