Just came across this pic of Emory Coons with a couple of his monster blades.

sweet jesus!!!!!
-
i seen that pic of him also
and thought, damn thats impressive
but then i also thought, ya know how many points ya can make from the amount of material it took to make them
i unerstand why those that can do that,do that.because they can of course and to be one of the few that actually can claim they can
but i still wish i just had that much material to work with
-
Holy cow :o!! I need to meet this guy sometime!!
-
Sailordad, If you knew Emory you could never even consider a statement like that. That man can dissect a three foot rock and waist almost nothing.Where most of us would have a mountain of unusable debris he makes use of almost everything. He generally makes these from the cores while making blades from every other flake that is taken off. I was totally blown away the first time that I saw him take a three foot boulder and turn it into a pile of perfect flakes most ranging from 8-12 inches. And having almost nothing that wasn't usable.
-
keenan, i dint mean anything bad by what i said.
i know he is a very very talented knapper.
i just dont see the practicality of making a blade that size.
even if i had the skills to do it.
its like i said guys that can do it,do it because they can.and becuase they are one of a few that can
and like i said,i wish i had material of that size to use
-
Keenan, is one of those the one you sent to Pappy during the Classic a few years ago?
-
Wow, just imagine what I could kill with those on a big stick.
-
I believe he has a website somewhere out there. I've read about his techniques- how he digs pits to absorb the hits- pretty ingeniouis! Just curious what he does with all those big pieces...there is only so much room to put stuff like that on display. Cool work, though!

Here is a good article about Emory,

-
No Pat, the one that I sent down was just a rough out that he gave me after dissecting the boulder for me. He grew up with a father in the lapidary business and started busting rock as a very small child. Has so much obsidian fragments embedded in his finger tips that he can't shoot fingers anymore because it hurts to much. He's real just a great guy with a high desert, small town upbringing. Doesn't really care about articles wrote on him and has no desires to be famous, but as far as talented nappers in the world he would rank with the best.
-
yeah , yeah, I know Emory. He always razzes me whenever I see him, but that's cause he's actually scared of me. He knows I can make bigger, thinner, and better blades than he ever could. He's scared cause he doesn't want me to show off my talents and undermine him. He looks at me like a sleeping volcano...never knowing just when I might go all out, blow the doors off the flintknapping world and make an 8-foot long blade. I've actually been commissioned by the military to make a few for them. They use them for shooting down enemy bombers at high altitude.
-
Wayne (stickbender) brought me back some nice obsidian from Emory. He has some nice pictures he took at Emory's house of all kinds of cool stuff if somebody can reduce his pictures for him.
-
e-mail me thy pictures wayne I will reduce em and post em ;)

;D ;D ;D Billy, If I was back a few hundred I'd want you both in the tribe, You for the meat and potatoes bird points and Emory for the Ceremonial blades to scare to show off to the neighboring tribes. But when it comes to the hunting I think those deadly little points you make are killer.
-
Emory always amazes me with his skill! Hey Keenan, you going to GB this year? Cant make it. Too much going on up here. Wish I could make it!
-
SHhhh... if you listen close enough you can hear the swoosh of the whip. ;D
-
Well was gonna say some things but sounds like some things going on I dont know about. If u smell what the rock is cooking! :-X
-
David ,David ,David, You still ain't brought her around to meet the rest of the family. :o ::)

Jeesh Keenan! Howd ya guess! ;D
I will see what I can do. I may be able to take the weekend and head out Friday morning and then have to head back Monday morning. Gayle will be out this way in April for a four days. Dont want to take too much time off or the business partner may scalp me! OUCH!!! :o
-
you guys and your big blades...whats this world coming too...who wants to do that.. :D :D :D :D

Keenan, the points that I saw at Emory's, were amazing. He has a room full of cases, of arrowheads, and doodles, he made out of obsidian, flint, and what ever material he came across that would knapp. He has tiny little arrow heads, made out of garnets, that were made into ear rings. There is nothing wrong with his arrow heads, they are perfect in symmetry, and VERY thin! :o He has no problem making em thin, or of any style. He just likes to make the big stuff also, but he does make a lot of arrow heads, and other interesting stuff. I had to keep pushing my mouth closed, every time he would bring out another case. Unfortunately my camera was acting up, and the battery ran out of juice, so I didn't get the shots I wanted, or all the pictures I wanted.

WOW that's some fine knapping..Cool pics
Thanks Leroy
-
He's amazing; Hey Jesse, It's hard to here that kind of whip. ;)
-
Thanks Dana M ! I appreciate it. The two obsidian daggers, he is holding in the picture right after the 42 inch unfinished pumpkin Obsidian blade, are spiral daggers! :o You can't see it in the picture unfortunately, but the blades spiral around like a corkscrew! it is hard enough working Obsidian as brittle as it is, especially on large objects, and to keep the spiral symmetrical to boot! :o Those eagles are thin too! :o I can't even make a blade without breaking it, in Obsidian! :( :'( And in the picture of the case with the Eagles, and arrow heads, and doo dads, the dark arrow heads to the right are Garnet! :o He made some into earing's. 8) He had cases of stuff like this, but my camera went on the blink, and I couldn't get any more pictures. :( But if any of you ever get out to Oregon, trust me on this, it will be well worth while to stop in Burns, and meet Emory, and his Dad. The whole yard is nothing but Obsidian boulders, and various kinds of other rock, jasper, flint, etc., front and back, and sides!! And be ready to have your jaw drop to the ground when he shows you some of his stuff! He is absolutely amazing, and he doesn't think it is anything to write home about, he is proud of his work, but that is the extent of it. He just enjoys doing that kind of work, and he has been doing it for so long, it doesn't seem like any particular big deal to do it anymore. I will definitely be going back out to see him again. Gotta get more rock anyway. Gave it all away. ;D
Eddie, you shouldn't be razzing Jesse about hearing the whip. It is bad enough having a leash on, without having to hear a whip too! ;D ;D ;D

emory has a whole lot of skill...i love his collection of jasper points....the main reason emory is so good is that if he didnt chip rock he would go crazy in burns...and if you been to burns you would know why....john
-
Blacktail, those are the exact words he said to me. He said that he didn't have this to do he would go nuts, as there is nothing at all to do in Burns. And having been through, and stayed the night twice, I can assure you there is not a thing to do in Burns! Plus the Steak house.......well,...... I have had better steaks, at Waffle house. :P ::) Plus it is fifty miles to anywhere. :o

Wayne, I wasn't razzing Jesse, I was agreeing with him. Tiller is the one starting to get Whipped. ;)
-
Ooops, Sorry Jesse, Tiller, read the part about Jesse! ;D
Wayne
-
man i love those eagles! how the heck does he do that?!?!?!
-
Recurve shooter......VERY carefully......You can see how thin they are. I can't even get a darn blade made without breaking it, or keep the barbs on a Wintu style from breaking off, let alone make one of those. He has a lot of very small, and very thin stuff, that he has made, that just makes you stare, and wonder the same thing. How in the ....... I wish my camera hadn't run out of juice, he had stuff, that was just amazing.

hey Wayne,i don't know if you seen it..but,this last year i seen Emory at the madras rock and gem show...he just got done making a GAINT ishi point and it was paper thin..i really didn't want to hold it...i was afraid if i sneezed or farted wrong it might break.LOL..john
-
I don't recalling seeing a big Ishi point, but he had plenty of regular sized ones, and some smaller ones, and just display case, after display case, of amazingly thin, and just absolutely perfect points of all styles, from rogue river, to wintu, to you name it. I am definitely going to be spending some time with him. 8)

Wayne,
there is a rock and gem show going on in boise this weekend. do you think Emory would be there? Boise is here in Idaho about 3 hrs or so from burns. I read somwhere he sometimes goes. If you know let me know and I will go and meet him.
Tell

Tell as far as I know he will spend the winter in Arizona. But give him a call, he just might go to it. Or his Dad might. I don't know if his Dad still goes to them anymore or not. But just give Emory a call. Call him in the evening. ;)
Wayne
-
Allright. I will tell him Wayne told me to call.
Tell
-
Ok, let me know if you get to meet him. Tell him you were the one I told him about, wanting to know about the jasper.
