I started this shelter last week, I am covering it with pine limbs and deer skin,,I am going to spend a few nites in it ,hopefully with the temps in the teens to test it out well,,
-
Good start. What will you put your fire in,Yazoo, if anything?
Is that a fire pit in the center, covered by some branches?
How are you planning on starting your fire?
Hope you keep us posted with more pics! Most intresting!
-
yes that is the fire pit in the center,,just going to make a rock hearth in center , thinking of running a piece of hollowed bamboo from outside to the fire pit so it will draw better,, will post more pics this week,,, mike

That looks like a great project. What are the overall dimensions of the structure? Internal/external height, diameter etc...?
-
it has a 10ft diameter, and 10ft tall in center, hopeing to stay a few nites in it when its really cold to see how well it holds heat.
-
with a ceiling height that tall, the heat will be all at the top
-
with a 10 ft circle you'll want some of that heat to get away from ya. that looks like its gonna be a cool shelter
-
And when You are done...looks like a few Possible Bow Staves there too!! Like Jamie said....I think you are going to need to shed some of that Heat...once you get it done...you will notice that it will not take much to keep that Shelter warm as toast!!
We used to build Shelters like this back Home...but they were more on the Lines of a Hogan...more Domed...built of Saplings and Tree Bark for a skin...pretty cool and they would last many Years before they needed to be re skinned with tree Bark...good luck and keep the Pictures coming

Cool! 8) Are the rocks going to be a problem in that temperature, when you put a fire in the ring? You don't want to have them spall all over you, just when you get all nice and compfortable...... ::) Would the moisture be out of them, from being so cold? Or would they be damp? Or is this a stupid question? Anyway, let us know how it works out, I hope you have fun.

Yeah...I think that I would definitely Heat treat them in a Fire before I slept around them...hate to not wake up...due to Rock Shrapnel..... :o

-
Hey Mike that looks good have you made a fire in it yet?
-
I have roasted some deer meat in it,, the fire drawed good,, when I get back for the tbof shoot I am going to stay a few nites in it,
-
Looks like good makings for a ground blind too. With the right spacing of the pine boughs you could shoot right through the sides. ;)
-
looks great
-
Never thought of that you could go hunting and never leave the shelter. ;D

Ronnie, I shot three deer and two turkeys with muzzle loading shotguns and 50 cal this fall sitting in a similar hut built out of Cabbage Palm fronds. I was sitting in a beach chair reading a book when I shot one deer. All the shots were within 25 yards.

With all natural stuff I guess they don't pay it much attention.
-
Yep they do like that natural stuff. A few years back, when I was hunting in Montana, down near, a boat landing, and pic nic area, there was a small hunting area, and they had cut a few small trees down, to clear an area, and I just laid down in between the trees, and watched the woods, and trails. I had about six does, and a couple of little spikes, walk right by me at about six to seven feet! :o And......the pak boots, I was wearing, I had previously tried to clean some mildew from them, and used a disinfectant, and soap, and the disinfectant stunk, and would not dissipate. I left them in the sun, and washed them again, and they still smelled like disinfectant. Didn't bother those deer in the least. Could've been they were used to chemical smells, at the boat landing.

Not at all. Even watched part of the Auburn-Alabama game on a cell phone till the batteries went dead. I just set up and built two for the prevailing winds. I also had a stand in a pine tree, 8' off the ground if the wind shifted out of the SE. I had a bear, stand on it's hind legs and sniff the bottom of my stand with my toes about 12" away from it's nose. I had the Set trigger ready to pull and pointed about 36" from it's forehead. It finally smelled people and took off running. I was glad, I'd of gone to jail or been feeding something to a gator if I'd shot it.

THAT IS FLIPPIN` COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Spread a thickish gravel under the fire place, put a light layer of sand over it and then build the fire over it, put some good sized rocks on the opposite side from where you will sleep and you can hold heat all night. My 18' Tipi will hold heat for several days that way.
-
My holiday Inn holds heat too...... ;D ::)
