Title: Rawhide Backed Osage
Post by: DanaM on March 10, 2010, 05:40:52 pm
Made this one to start working my shoulder and in the process hopefully lengthen my draw length.
Osage, deer rawhide backed as the stave had very thin rings and I got sloppy chasing them :o
40#@ 28" with buffalo horn tips, stained the whole bow with mahogany leather dye and some black dabbed on the back.
Cut in shelf and a very minimal grip, shoots nice and at 40# it allows me to work on rehabing my shoulder and concentrate on my form.

Very Nice Osage bow Dana!  I can't wait to see this one at the Classic in person.  ...And since it is 28" draw I can "test shoot" it right?   :) :)

Great looking bow Dana!  I have a request.  I'm looking to build my first bow with an arrow shelf.  Do you have a picture of the front view (back of the bow) of the handle and shelf are that you could post?  I'm especially interested in how you blend the fades into the shelf area both on the shelf side and the opposite side of the bow. Thanks.

Howdy DanaM,

Beautiful!!  BOM competition is heating up.  ;)

I like everything about this bow; profiles, handle, staining, overlays, and especially the full draw profile.

All the Best,

Thanks guys I appreciate the kind comments :)

Hedgeapple if you look at past threads I'm sure you can find better examples than my bow, search for Ryano's bows
he does a real nice cut in shelf :) I usually make shoot off the knuckle bows :)

Hey Dana nice bow, you gonna shoot her at the classic? I have to scrap down one of my bows for a lower weight since my shoulder has been giving me grief, I should have it injected but I'm too cheap to go to the doctor.

Post by: DanaM on March 13, 2010, 08:06:33 pm
edddie it shoots pretty darn good, I'm really trying to lengthen my draw and the only way is to lighten the load
so to speak, at 40#@28" I can get her back the full 28" It hurts my shoulder but I'm workin it, need to rebuild /save the muscle
that is left :)

Post by: Justin Snyder on March 14, 2010, 12:55:06 am
Nice looking bow Dana. It ought to be a good shoulder exercise even if you don't want to lengthen your draw.
Title: Re: Rawhide Backed Osage
Post by: DanaM on March 14, 2010, 07:41:17 am
Thanks Justin :) Anything over 40 lbs and my shoulder starts to give way and I have to bend the elbow to take the strain
which results in a short draw >:(

Hey Dana on the short draw thing, if your shoulder is only good for 40# then I would say 40# at 28" is much better than at @ 24". Most people who over bow them selfs might think they ar shooting a 60# bow but getting less than that due to not drawing it fully, and loosing acuracy as well.  My shoulder is not what it used to be and the lighter bows are fun to shoot. A well designed lighter bow drawn deeply is no slouch especially if you shoot it well.     Kenneth
