Title: 48" presentaton Ottawa (not for bom)
Post by: half eye on April 25, 2010, 04:17:18 pm
Just finished up this little ottawa, thought ya might like a look. Notice that there are 2 full draw pics....1st the bow right side up and the second is the bow draw upside down. After the obligatory shots there are some detail, or close-up shots as well. Apparently Ottawa natives would (in a pinch) crab the bow and start shooting so their bows were expected to shoot either way.

Here's the specs: hard maple self bow (no backing), weighs 45# @ 25" and been tillered to 26/27"
width @ grip is 1-1/4" and at the tip it's 7/8"
thickness @ the grip is 3/8" and at the tip it's 1/4" thick
node width at the grip is 1-1/2" and 1-1/4" at the tips.
Mass weight of the bow is 9-1/2 ounces (266g)

Thanks for looking, pics in two posts
Rich

Nice D- bow! Not for BOM? Why not? You`re holding it 2 times different, feather up, feather down. It should be the same because its a D_ bow. But the feather is a weather vane, so it should be on top.
Regards Uwe

uwe,
Ya the upper limb has the feather and a "pointy" fineal. Because the grip scallop is 5" I was just curious to see if the bow was tillered well enough to "reverse" it (4" difference in the pressure point on the grip). My friend Jay Sam told me that during ambushes and the like, the Ottawa would just grab and shoot...so I was curious to see if my bow would be able to do that. Thanks for the reply
Rich

Howdy Half Eye,

Hey, another dandy bow from Half Eye!!

As always, I'm impressed by your work.

So...  What's that backing material?  (It looks like snake skin.)

All the Best,
Canoe

Beauty job there, Rich!  When I can get an unbacked bow to bend like that without self-destruction, I'll know I've arrived!!!

Very nice, Rich. You work a lot with maple, I've noticed. Do you use heat in your process?

Canoe, There is no backing....what looks like skin is just a paint job. There isn't anything on the bow except for paint and the walnut shell dye on the belly.

GMC, no I dont use any heat, I really try to keep the wood as close to original as possible....some of the NA bows I smoke but that's about it.

Thanks for the nice words guy's much appreciated.

Another stunner from Half Eye; no surprise there!  When will you let us vote for one of these?  And one more question, How did you paint the snakeskin on?  With a screen and sprayed paint?

Very nice.  There is nothing better than a short D bow at full draw.  You really maxed out that shorty, fine work.  I also really like the paint work.

Hmmm very nice bow old chap.  ;)

(I'm not usually a great fan of paint on bows but you guys have a legitimate heritage of native decoration to cite as precedent...I love it, the animal tracks are a nice touch.)

Half Eye,

That is an amazing bow and arrows!  I can't believe that it is "just" a paint job on the back!!!  That is amazing!!!

Hey Dell,
I dont normally do painted finishes either....just a test shot to see how the overall results would look.
Stickthrower,
Just plain ole lacquer paint, honest!
Thanks for the nice comments.
