Beautiful Bow, Ken. That's what a call a major make-over for a shipping crate. :)
-
Awesome Ken, Kudos to you for pulling it off unbacked too! Beautiful bow, man!~ :)
-
thanks guys john josh and hedge ,i know its board and all but anytime i get an unbacked to stay put im happy . one day i'll make some gooder bows
-
Ipe shoots great. Way to go on that, for sure. I made one unbacked and it held about 2 weeks, then whamo!
The grain wasn't having it on mine...
Simplicity is always good looking - awesome job!
-
Gooder bows? :) It doesent get much gooder than that man... I think it is very beautiful. :) I think you did a wonderful job on it, Unbacked Ipe just scares me is all. You have inspired me to try it though. :)
-
Simple and nice just what I like.Very nice bow
Thanks Leroy
-
Very nice! I wish I could turn one out in a day.
-
"Gooder bows"?????? Board bows ARE gooder "bows". They don't waste wood like stave bows do!!!!
-
parnell i agree, josh it was a good quarter sawn board a lil run off on one end but i rounded the crap out of it , tdog not sure how long u been at it but my first one held together round october of 09 so it gets better before that i broke but forty acres worth of wood ,this site will help . ive built ten or so since then some good some gooder ;D. ken i agree but i keep trying for the staves too, hope to be posting a maple static recurve in a day or two unless it becomes a takedown :( . thanks to everyone else for looking . I LOVE THIS ADDICTION !!
-
I have built a few unbacked ipe bows and see no reason it shouldnt last. Rich Saffold is a good one to talk to on this subject he was the one who got me hooked on the stuff.
Jeff,
Oh yeah, very nice bow, simple is gooder!! ;D
-
thanks N really like your bows rich posted
-
Hey Ken,
That bow is sweet, nice lines, good power.....who cares how the wood was cut? That is a classic bow profile my friend!
Rich
-
thanks rich , u know you have helped a lot . and i sure like being able to hunt with one in a couple hours
-
i like the tiller. and its simplicity
-
Nice looking bow. Good for you saving good wood from a slow painful death as a pallet. Kind of wide for Ipe, how thick are the limbs?
-
justin bout 3/8ths i went with a pyramid like profile only 1 3/4 wide at fade , i took it out to shoot a few after the original post and was truly amazed at the speed. no crono but it is a very quick straight bow !! justin the boards a found most have been big crates their 1 by 4s ten foot long.thanks all for looking and commenting !
-
outstanding bow Ken, I have a soft spot for unbacked Ipe. Don't see many of them.

I like the profile, and for a pyramid you have to have a little width at the fades. Ipe like all woods has different densities. I have tillered and had less than 1/4" left at 60# but I have also had about 3/8" that is why I ask. Regardless of the density, I haven't seen bad Ipe. Nice bow for sure.
-
Bow looks real good Ken. You scored big time on the wood and I hope you make many bows from it. The performance of these "board bows" ;) is what got me to write about this wood many years ago, and because there aren't a whole lot of Ipe trees in our hemisphere. There is one large one nearby, and it's the "only" tree to make me drool uncontrollably.
-
thanks all , rich i would like to read what you wrote , where can i find it ?
-
A nice entry for May Self BOM. Any splinters lifting off?
-
Ken, Both in PA mag. First is "lumber Yard Gem" Vol 7 Issue 2 I think. Ipe revisited Aug 2008 or something like that. Also the first article I wrote was " In the Palm of my hand" about making my first bow from Senegal Date Palm.
I've made several IBI and one OBO lately, and have a finished article somewhere that I should send in when I find it ???

old bow no splinters other than the ones in my hands the back seems sound , rich thanks for the info, just for the record i blew up a cherry today
-
...so you "popped a cherry"? >:D O:) ;D
I always get the worst splinters working with Ipe...
-
yes ! dont happen often anymore but it did today , got ballsy and tried unbacked , i knew better had the backin layin right there oh well
-
thanks scott
-
this has quickly become my favorite bow, so i thought i would spruce it up a bit .glued on a 70 inch oak snake ( grey rat snake for the purist !)and used the left over one inch strips for the handle wrap
