how bad does bamboo check if you cut during the summer? or does it check at all? any sugestions? I may be cutting some soon. thanks

I cut a bunch in the summer coupla years ago, split it in half with a mechete and had no problems with splitting. I did leave a few whole just to have and they just about split in half by their selves.

Don't harvest new "green" bamboo (age not the color green).  Always harvest culms that are at least a year old,  Green cut bamboo, as it dries, will split much worse than if you cut older (not necessarily larger diameter) culms.  You want culms that are still alive, but not growing this year..
