Post by: HoBow on June 18, 2010, 07:58:31 pm
I got home today to a downed tree in my driveway and am not sure what it is (I just moved and all my tree books are still packed up....any ideas?  Thanks!

yup
White ash I believe. White ash leaves have a rounder cluster as your pics show. And definitely ash...you can tell by the perfect semitry in the opposing limbs.

Thanks for the quick responses!  I went and stopped the city from hauling it off.....I guess I'm going to be spending tomorrow splitting and sealing  ;D  Looks like white ash grows most everywhere, except on the gulf coast where I moved from..... new bow wood!!!

Ken, the map I saw showed it was available most everywhere in the US except AL and MS Gulf coast and a tad into Florida. We had pines, magnolias and southern oaks...

Jeff, being that it is a planted tree it doesn't necessarily mean it is indigenous to your area. Looks like lots of similar trees in the background.
Ash would have been my first thought just because of the compound leaves.

My first response was, "who cares what kind of tree it is! - it's bow wood in your driveway!".......lol.  Around here, if it isn't wearing cones and needles, or dropping poplar pollen sacs,  I look carefully at any tree I see down.  In fact, on the way to work this morning, I found a downed branch from an unidentified tree on the old courthouse lawn.  Just have to figure out how to, ah, "liberate it"....perhaps it's time for me to put on my hard hat and flourescent vest.....and just look like I belong there doing what I want to do.

I can almost hear you now, "yes officer, the remaining tree was a safety hazard to children in the area....too bad it had to come down, but safety first!"

;)

Ain't it great! When you start building bows, I always say no tree ever looks the same again. I see all kinds of possibilities. lol Denny O:)
