Title: Hickory Deflex Recurve
Post by: RyanY on June 19, 2010, 10:39:34 pm
Here is a hickory deflex recurve I made a few weeks ago. Its 58" ntn and about 50#@28". The limb starts out at 2" and tapers to 3/8". It has an ebony stain with osage tips. I tried to make this bow in the way of the famous Marc St. Louis but it didn't come out as good. Even after heat treating it twice it didn't retain any reflex. Also when I was trying to tiller it I had some limb twist problems but those got straightened out. I think my favorite part of this bow was the handle just because it feels really nice in the hand. Even though it didn't come out super fast it still shoots pretty good and is super quiet. Hopefully the next one will be better. Thanks for looking.

Cool little bow, Ryoon and very well executed. I'm not fond of that type of handle but it definitely shows your skill level.  ;)   8)

Thanks everyone. This bow was a blast to make and I recommend the design to anyone just to try something a little different.

I have been trying to clear my schedule to make one of that design for months now.   I'd say you nailed it pretty well.  Its hard to keep reflex in an all hickory bow.  I was going to try glueing in the reflex.  Still its looks as cool as any i have seen in a long time.  How did you do the curves??

Thanks guys.  ;D

Sulphur - I glued in the reflex and the recurves were boiled in. I also tempered the recurves so I could reduce their mass. When I heat treated this bow the first time I hadn't done very much tillering so I don't think it penetrated as deep as I wanted it to. After I finished tillering the bow and heat treated it again I think I may have been asking too much of the wood so it didn't retain the reflex. I think next time I'll get it tillered farther before I heat treat it.
