Title: not anymore , cracks , my first working gauva selfbow , watch out pigs
Post by: Paka on July 13, 2010, 07:43:47 am
First , a big mahalo (thanks) to everyone on this site for all the knowledge , inspiration and encouragement. I havent posted much but have bein reading in like crazy.
2nd , this traditional bug got me good. I'm 33 , married with 4 kids and had t sell my 5th baby (compound bow) 3 months ago to pay some bills.  Couldnt be happier. Love making bows. Made a red oak board bow that I shot a pig with last week but Vinny's gauva bows opened up a whole new world for me, wish i could get a hold of him.
Anyways heres the lowdown . She's 67.5 "ntn. , 55 pounds at 28 inches. Her lower limb bends in about an inch naturally inwards and she is a funky tillering bow. BUT , she shoots great. Need to save some $ for string material , for now its nylon with dental floss as serving. Anyways heres some pics

bad news, did full draw pics and noticed 3 cracks on the belly  of uper limbs,  errrr :o Could it be from the nylon string, or the wood not drying out more than 3months, my craftmanship or what?? It still shoots good but what a bummer. I have 2 more staves that have bein drying , better go get somemore ;)

That's too bad. That's a fret. The upper limb is bending too much in that area. That looks deep and will probably eventually fold up like a book. Been there too. Plenty of times. Jawge

The braced pic already made me think the upper limb bends to much...

PS: And I'm sure someone on here will happily help out an ex-compounder with a decent string on your next!

dont know what to say guys ,but i put some super glue and Dacron string on cracks and it still shoots as good as boardbow ;) its funky but it keeps on shooting. Am working on next stave and think I'll use more of a D shape style on it and see how it goes . :D
