Title: best so far lifted a splinter -- update " patched"
Post by: Jesse on July 22, 2010, 05:38:36 pm
Im really happy with this one. It came out better than I could expect.  Its  bamboo backed ipe 64" ntn 55# @ 28" What I like best about this bow is that it is absolutely  dead in my hand. The bamboo and ipe came from David. The handle is made of a black cherry I cut on my dads land, osage, bacote and some kind of a gum that came from Shannon/ Saw filer for the main riser piece. The color of the gum is incredible. I wish I had more of it.  A friend of mine with spray equipment helped me out with the finish but I forgot what it was called. Nice dull finish though. This is the first bow from my newly altered form and I am really happy with it. I had a chance to test it through a crono " not that that means anything :)" it shot 180fps at exactly 10 gpp and 28" draw using fingers which is great to me. Cant wait to take it hunting.      Thanks for looking.

Jesse,
That bow turned out beautiful

I really like the handle shape, the amount of reflex it kept, and the tiller is perfect on it!

Got it bookmarked for July Laminates BOM too!

Once again great job man!

Thanks again for the compliments guys. Much appreciated :)
Sanford-  The finish Is called Krystal :) A friend of mine has the spray equipment and sprayed it quick for me.  I'm gonna buy some of it for sure. It has very little shine so its gonna be great for hunting.

Thanks and yes David has nice stuff. He taught me a lot about bow making through our conversations.  I still have much to learn though :)

Title: Re: My best so far POPPED A SPLINTER
Post by: Jesse on July 23, 2010, 03:39:58 pm
I was shooting it a bunch more today and heard a little tick. First time I popped a splinter on bamboo. It was at a spot where the bamboo was naturally a little thinner. I had my eye on the spot already before I even glued it and figured if it was gonna go that would be the spot. Oh well gotta break a few here and there ;D. Might make a franken bow out of it like Josh did :). The splinter is not real bad but Im not going to try a glue and wrap fix. I might just hang it up untill I decide what to do with it.
Im going out of town for a few days so I might not have internet so sorry if I dont reply right away. I'll post pics of the break when I return.           Jesse

Dang, Jesse that is sad.. I really liked this bow alot.  It is too awesome to do away with, so I would definitely make another limb for it.. Just save it until you have another one lift a splinter and combine the two good limbs.  ... or just build half a bow, LOL.  frankenbows are awesome.  Especially if the risers contain different woods... Once again I am sorry that it happened.   :(

And just when I thought I'd give boo a chance again, you've convinced me to stick with hickory for awhile....

Sorry bout that Jesse, Hope you find another half for it.

Well I just couldn't give up on this one that easy so I tried my hand at a patch job. I have seen wraps fail so I decided to use a splint as well. I sanded the splintered area and glued down the splinter with tite bond instant CA. I then thinned a piece of boo really thin and glued it over the area going beyond into the unaffected part. I then wrapped it with a rubber clamp to let it cure for a few minuets. Then I took the straps off and wrapped it with braided fishing line "I know not primitive but its what I had"  Finally I soaked in some super glue over the top and sealed it. It did change the tiller a bit and it took 1/8" more set. Still shoots fast and hard though. I was a bit nervous shooting it the first few times but after a few hundred shots I managed to get the courage to hold it full draw long enough for the self timer to take a picture ;D Not pretty but hey its a working bow again.(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u169/WIbowyer/bow001-1.jpg)(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u169/WIbowyer/bow002.jpg)(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u169/WIbowyer/bow003.jpg)(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u169/WIbowyer/bow004-1.jpg)(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u169/WIbowyer/bow005.jpg)(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u169/WIbowyer/bow006.jpg)(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u169/WIbowyer/bow007.jpg)(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u169/WIbowyer/bow009.jpg)

Nice, clean looking patch, Jesse. I'm fixing one right now that did the same. Except I'm scraping the rind off and sinew backing it. When I'm done I'll cover it with a long Bull snake skin.

Thanks Eddie. I think the sinew will work great. I was considering it but I didnt have the materials. Make sure you post it when its done

I think you should wrap the other limb in the same spot so it would be symmetrical.  It would look like it was designed that way and not patched.

personally I would leave the other limb alone. Be proud of your patch... It shows how much you loved your bow because instead of giving up and retiring it you took the time to repair it and keep it shooting.  It is like a badge of honor or a cool battle scar... I like it.  :)

Hey good save! I actually have the same problem right now, though my splinter is about twice as long, but i am still going to see if i can get it fixed. I will probably use that tite bond CA, as i couldn't decide was would be best, but i think that seems like a good choice.

Exactly! The first real shooter I ever made is still going strong with a patch like that on one limb...

Glad you guys like the patch :) I thought about trying to match the other limb but I'm just gonna leave it. Makes it more of a beater but thats really what I need is a beater for hunting :)
Josh leave it out of BOM. The wrap is braided fishing line "not natural material"    Thanks :)
