This bow is sort of a collaboration between my friend Erik and myself. I cut the tree down, He roughed out the stave, I heat straightened it, and he floor tillered to brace... We shelved the project for awhile until about a month ago after I finished the one I was working on we decided to use dry heat to flip the tips.
The first tip went smooth as butter but the second tip cracked on the belly side. I could tell this really disappointed my friend, so I told him I would try and patch it and see if it would hold.
Since the curve was already pretty much in the bow, I put a C-clamp over the crack so it would still cool into the shape I wanted without lifting anymore or trying to straighten out. After it cooled, I gently applied a little back pressure and filled the crack with super glue till it ran out of both sides of the crack and put it back on the form with a clamp holding the crack closed. While that was drying, I made a patch out of a scrap piece of HHB I bent to the shape of the belly curve. I glued it on with Urac. I have pulled the bow countless times and the crack/patch shows no signs of moving or separating so I guess it will be okay.
This bow is pretty short compared to my last 3. It is 62" NtN and pulls 55lbs at 28" It shows 1/2 inch of follow directly after unstringing and lays flat after a little while. I drew an owl on his top limb because that is his favorite bird and no matter what time of day/where we are at, he can always seem to call them up. I didn't tell Erik the bow was even still among the living and I went to his house last night after work to present him with it. He seemed to like it alot and I hope ya'll do to. Thanks for looking! :) :)

Nice save Josh...tiller looks great on it too! I have had that happen twice now...not with HHB...but with Ash and Elm...and both time I have saved the Limbs with a Sinew wrap...and they are ....as You put it....Still among the Living....great job
-
oh jeez that is nice
-
nice lines- graceful looking bow! beautiful tiller too!
Rob
-
Thank you, Mike.. I was gonna sinew wrap it but just wanted to see if a patch would hold without it... So far, so good.
Thanks yb33!
Thank you Elk. :)
-
NIce job! I've had that happen too. Jawge
-
Nice job! and good fix too, i bet your buddy was suprised (grin) Cool owl too
-
Thank you Jawge!
Thanks Elk! It was pretty cool getting to surprise him with this bow. He was the one who got me into this hobby/addiction so it feels good to be able to give him something in return.
Thank you Scott! I only have one spot where these things grow that I've found but there are a BUNCH of them, most are twisted but there are still a few standing that I really wanna go harvest. I can't find them anywhere else around besides that one spot... Thanks for the compliment on the owl.. I used to draw all the time but kinda got out of it a few years back.

:) Nice tiller and a good rescue

Looks great to me Josh! I've never tried HHB but have a stave GregB gave me two or three years ago - need to giterdone ;D.
-
Thank you acker and Paul. :)
-
Josh great work brother! I love HHB its some tough stuff compared to others but the end result is what is important! Nice lines and the owl is cool too.

Nice bow Josh!
-
Thank you, Russ and Frank! I am really starting to like this HHB stuff... It is as tough as hickory without all the stringfollow.... At least in my experience. :)
-
Really like this bow Josh. Looks great and I bet it can really move an arrow. :)
-
Nice job on that one Josh, looks like you pretty well nailed it. Steve
-
Thank you Barrage!
Thanks a bunch, Steve!

Nice!
Same thing happened to me yesterday when recurving the tips of a bow. I was thinking of roughing out the damaged wood completely and then glue a new piece of wood over. You only glued the new piece over the cracked area right?
-
Beautiful bow Josh. Of course you are so consistant at finishing up with great tiller, it's almost like we're seeing reprints!! Thanks for sharing with us.
-
Thanks n2!
Thank you Tbod! I just filled the crack with superglue then applied the patch over the whole works. It just seemed to be a safer alternative to trying to dish out all the broken wood first.
Thank you ChasingCrow! ...I guess I DO need to change my design they are starting to look a little bit the same. :)
-
Ok thanks! The patch really looks cool by the way.
I did the dish out method today on my tip, exiting!!!
-
Cool Tbod.. Should be just fine if not better. If I were repairing a chrysal that was in the mid-limb area, I would dish out the bad area and plug it with a sound piece of wood. :) Post pics of it when you get it finished, I wanna see what it looks like. Good luck on yours! :)
-
Alright pic coming tomorrow.
Was thinking a little.. The problem with your patch IMO is it might crack horizontally at the bottom of the first crack.
Se the pic I drew a theoretical first crack black and the other that might occur with red.
I'm just thinking outloud in theory..overthinking..

It's not going anywhere, trust me. The patch is thick so that area doesn't bend so there's no chance of it moving or splitting longitudinally like you drew. And besides, have you ever tried to split a piece of Hophornbeam? this stuff doesn't want to separate even when you try to force it with a wedge... If I were to continue bending the bow towards the back without the patch I think that could happen but bending it towards the belly as in bracing/drawing the bow i don't think it will..the back of the bow would have to do some serious stretching... I'm sorry but your theory doesn't hold much water with me.

Tiller looks good Josh!
-
Josh,
I hope you did not take my comment wrong. I was refering to your consistant perfection!
Chasing Crow

Thanks Frank!! :)
Chasingcrow I didn't take your comment wrong, I took it as you meant it...as a compliment! Thanks again, brother. :)
-
Hey! here's the tip. I posted it here so you could easily find it. Feel free to remove it or something..
I'm ready to start tillering it now, "the moment of truth" for the save patch

Eeeeeew....I say as long as the Tip stays Static...It may have a good Chance of Surviving....if it Flexes at all....I say it's going to fail....like a built up Riser that Flexes and pops...JMO....good luck and keep Us posted

Very nice job Josh. Also good job on the save.

Nice job Josh. That is what self- bowyering is all about,IMHO,coping with wood.Looks great. God Bless
