Finished this one up this morning, had it kicking around while I'm working on some take-downs. Sorta a love-hate relationship with this thing. It gave me a bunch of trouble as soon as I got the finish on. Sorry about the photos, should have waited until the sun was a little lower.
It's hot box cured hickory, 64" ntn. About 1 1/2" reflex after unbracing, it started with about 2 1/2" reflex after first bend once the sinew was dry. The narrow sinew band stops about 5" from the tips, but should have stopped it sooner. The limbs are 2", mostly pyramid taper to about 5/16" pin nocks. Slightly concave on the outer limbs. It's 59# at 28", 63# at my draw. Sinew is coated in TB III, and the finish is spar urethane. It's particularly light in the hand.
Very fast for the weight, almost as fast as "Black Betty" with the same arrows, but requires more effort to keep the same size groups. Started out as a selfbow, but a little light, so I shortened and backed it. Walnut stain, even up onto the sinew. It looked really primitive and old, but at the same time very simple, so I looked up the latin for "stick", talea. It would make a great close quarters hunting bow, and really shoots well at shorter draw lengths too.

You've come a long way Grasshopper! ;) Very nice bow Kegan! Almost perfect weight for my 26" draw. ;D
-
Great bow Kegan.
Really like the color. What about those big snakes I sent you? They must be getting ready for another bow. Look forward to seeing what you do with them.

whats the dimensions on the handle/fade area. ive got a stave that is almost exactly like that, and thats the style i was gonna go for!
-
Wow Kegan, that really looks like a bow that'll zip an arrow. The tiller looks exempliary and I admire how you brought down the outer limbs while keeping them stiffer. Way to go!
-
wow, Kegan, gorgeous bow! seems like you've taken your skills to a whole new level!

Thanks eveyrone :)
Tell- I was going to put the longest skin you sent on this one, but it was a few inches short because I took the sinew a little too far. However, I have a couple neat idea projects that I'm looking forward to using them on.
Aero86- The handle is about 1" wide, 4 1/2" long, with 2 1/2" long fades. It's about 1 3/4" deep on average, I don't recal exactly.
Parnell- I've been starting all the roughed out staves as 1/2" thick pyramids. At 2", they start out pretty heavy, so I just thin the inner sections and narrow the outer. I'm getting lighter and lighter on each bow I do, with more and more concave a taper.
Rob- it's all the great influence on here, like your hickory/cherry laminate, and TBB vol. 4. Can't help but want to make 'em better after all that ;)

Very Nice Kegan! We'll see it again in the August Self Bow of the Month Contest too! :)

Good work Kegan :)
-
Great looking bow, as we've all come to expect from you.
-
very nice , those light tips look like the flight bows !
-
great looking bow.
with exception of the handle it looks like a narrow andaman island bow. i have made a couple similar lately and love the design. have you considered doing a bend through the handle version of the same limb design?
-
That's a great bow Kegan,I like it. God Bless
-
That Bow is awesome. Any chance of getting measuremnts ? lol I love the color and the grip.
I am litterly in awe.
Awesome work my friend.

Keag, your bows just keep getting better. I like that one a good bit!
-
Kegan that is an oustanding bow. I really like the design of this Hickory bow. Keep up the good work. And thanks for sharing. Dean

Thanks everyone :).
Otis- I prefer deep handled bows for the most part, unless I'm going for a specific design. I'm currently working on a shorter ambush style that will bend more through the grip though, and it might be more like the Andaman island bow you're talking about.
Sam- it's 64" ntn, 65" total. 2" wide for 10", tapering to 5/16" tips with a concave taper. It started out 1/2" thick , with most of the thinning taking place on the inner limbs.

Kegan,
i would love to see a close up pic of the back of the limb, to see the colours and sinew.
also a shot of the under side of the limbs to see the profile.
and a close up of the limb tips would be interesting too... if you don't mind us seeing them that is.
i usually make my limbs convex on both side like an andaman bow (less curve on the back), and have never thought of making a concave/hollow belly limb profile. might have to have a look into that.
thanks

Beautiful. I love those narrow tips. ;D
-
Kegan, nice bow and I love that profile. You're starting to get down into my shooting range.
-
Great looking Bow Kegan! I like how you've refined your skills while still maintaining the caveman look ;)
-
Kegan, nice bow and I love that profile. You're starting to get down into my shooting range.
Same here! ;D ;D ;D
-
Thanks everyone :)
Otis- here's the color, the taper, and the tip. The belly taper is pyramid, more or less, and won't show up in a picture as anything special. Hope these help.
Eddie- I'm getting more and more comfortable at 65-70# with a 600 gr arrow. As my bows get better, the speed is starting to get faster than any of the bows I had done over that too. Best of both worlds :)

thanks Kegan, those tips sure are fine :)

Now THAT is a great looking bow. Love the front profile.. nice job very nice.

Thanks guys :) I put the bow quiver I made on it and it makes a world of difference. With that little bit of extra weight in the hand it's a really nice hunting bow. Might have to make another bow quiver or two after seeing this ;)
