The X in Xmas is the ancient Greco/Roman symbol for Christ. Since Christianity spread from Rome To Greece then to Western Europe I guess Xmas would be thwe proper title nugget.

Post by: HoBow on August 24, 2010, 12:07:11 am
That's right agd. Two theories (at least from what I've read) exist. X was used because of illiteracy among the common who was adopting Christianity or it was used as code to avoid persecution. Today, its used as a way of PC though- at least that's how I take it. The term doesn't offend me...

Title: CHRISTMAS EXCHANGE
Post by: Wolfsongforge on August 24, 2010, 12:53:07 am
I always thought the X in relation to Christians came from the Chi-Rho. that was made of the first letters in Greek of Christ's name. Chi=Ch and Rho=R. it is shaped bu superimposing the 2 Greek letters over each other and it looks like a X with a P going through it. It was also the symbol of the first Christian roman emperor Constantine.  that could be why some call it Xmas. but i think most just call it that out of habit.
just my 2 cents, spend em how ya want.

God Bless
Kenneth

Cough, cough, um hey guys, remember the rules:

Rule #1

NO discussion of politics

Rule #2

NO discussion of religion

We've already got one thread on this board treading into political territory, let's please not get a religious thing started. No problem talking about Christmas, but getting into Christian theology? Only leads to disagreements.

PA Magazine has nothing to do with the Christmas Trade. It is strictly between the folks here on the website to coordinate and execute it.
As far as Christmas vs. Xmas, I'm not offended by either. There are too many other more serious things going on in the world to get caught up in semantics so here on PA lets discuss all things related to primitive archery without getting our feelings hurt because of what someone else says or believes. If you don't like it, IGNORE IT!!!   Sticks and stones(PA related) can break my bones but words will never harm me!!!...or you!

Pat, when it was up in the air last year and we weren't sure it was going to happen again the magazine decided to have Sara run it. I know lots of people are willing to run it, but I wanted to make sure the magazine staff wasn't going to do it again before I offered any answers.  ;)

John Paul, Whomever is in the trade puts their name the hat. A drawing takes place and you send a homemade gift to the name that picked for you. It doesn't have to be a bow but it does have to be homemade.  I like to consider who I'm making the present for before deciding what it will be.

Count me in for this year. It sounda very interesting and a great way to get an appreciation for something primitive things you dont necessarily have the talent to make and at the same time share your talents.

Can anyone tell me if the rules are posted out there somewhere? I'll look around and see what I can dig up on my own, just wondering.

Any final word on this yet (I'm not sure who's been taking care of it in the past)?  I'd love to get involved, but I need to get started on something soon if it's going to be a "go".  I've committed to making several gifts this year to try to save money.  One more's not going to be a big deal, but I do need to get started.

I'm with you Jonathan, I'd like to get involved as well. I think I looked back at past threads and right about now was the time frame when they got things rolling. Does anyone know if there is a date determined so far this year to get it going?
Title: CHRISTMAS EXCHANGE
Post by: woodstick on November 04, 2010, 07:15:08 pm
well oh well dern. it was good last year i think but it is a time to be happy and send cool things to peps you never known. so it could be a december gift exchange, that way everybody dont have to figure out what it is. its the thinking behind the gift. it dont have to be a high end bow or anything outragous just something from your on hands. i got a bow sock last year alot of peps would think it should be a bow or something big, but this was one saweeet bow sock and it was made from the hands of a good man. so put your mind to work and have fun with it.

What the heck, I guess it's high time I contributed something around here.  Unless anyone has a burning desire to do it instead I'll do it.  Set the deadline for signup sometime next week?  That way everybody will have a month or so to get their gifts done and out the door before Christmas.

Title: Re: CHRISTMAS EXCHANGE
Post by: Calendargirl on November 05, 2010, 12:05:07 am
Yes I did say that I would do it.  Mullet wasn't telling a tale.... this time.
So I guess we need to get this party started!

Here's the deal:
You have to let me know by November 15th if you want to "play".  I know that sounds soon but you all get 10 days to think about it and put your name in the hat.
On the 16th. I will send you your person.  Then you have until January 15th to mail your gift.  That gives you 2 months to get it together and out the door.

Here is the important part.  Once you are in try your darndest to stay in.  Send me a P.M. with your name AND your mailing address.  I will collect all the names and then post them on the 15th of those that are "in".  If you don't see your name you can contact me.  I will P.M. you with your person and their mailing address.
The purpose is to make something handmade from the heart... and surprise your person.  That means don't tell them you have them. If you have a question for your giftee then you can message me and I can find the answer for you.

Does that make sense?  If you have any questions about the trade then post it here.
Thanks!

you guys crack me up!
Ok I gave you all only 2 instructions.  So far some have passed the test.  Others hmmmm.  I won't mention any names YET

If you post on here that you are "in" (bone pile) I might not see it so I will give the instructions one more time...let's see who can get an "A+"

1. MESSAGE ME VIA P.M.
2. GIVE ME YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS WHERE YOU WANT YOUR GIFT SHIPPED

if you give extra info that is fine, I will try to make note and may ask for more later.
So far we have some takers in the trade so it is ON!  ;D

first responder with ALL the correct info!  ;D

Hey all whatever you do don't start second guessing your gift you are making.  That has happened in the past.  The focus is on giving a homemade gift and the thought and time that goes into it.  This was all based on "Giving back" and "Passing it On".
Have fun with it!   ;D

Good job guys for going for it. It truly is allot of fun.  Don't have the mindset that you have to build a bow or something that takes a month of time. Just do what you can and have fun blessing whoever you get. I think the fun part is trying to fit the gift to the person. Come everyone this is the last day to join!  ;D ;D ;D

If it makes you feel better, it isn't 19 pairs, it is 38 individuals. 38 is a nice even number.  ;)

Ok peeps,
I have spent the day drawing names and documenting on a spread sheet who has whom
and sending everyone a message.  ok not the whole day but all afternoon.  I think the drumrolls before each name was drawn added a little time to it as well.

SO I tell you all of this... because if for some reason you have NOT received a p.m. with your person you must contact me.

Also I have already been playing secret messenger and finding out information for people.  I am happy to do that if you need direction.
If you have any questions just ask!
Otherwise enjoy!

I started working on this stave for the Christmas Exchange. I already put about 2 hours into it as you see it now. It should be a fun project. Plenty of wood to work with and some heat straightening is in order and it does have a few issues that will be a challenge. Let's see where this takes us!  ;D

If you can't find any sticks crooked enough, then you need to move up hear Pat. :D  Or maybe we just need to send you a truck load of vine maple, juniper, mountain mahogany, and yew. ::)  i tend to chuckle inside when someone ask me for a straight stave.  ::)  My first thoughts are (straight compared to what?)
Title: Re: CHRISTMAS EXCHANGE
Post by: gstoneberg on December 07, 2010, 05:54:22 pm
Pat, I can perhaps help with the crooked osage.  I just have to do better next time protecting against borers.  There's a place here a couple miles from home where there's more osage than my back would let me cut in a month.  It's pretty crooked.  There's no way I'm shipping green osage, but if you're ever down Dallas-way I can certainly send you back with a pickup load (which aint a full bed ;)).

If you really want a challenge, I picked up some 80 year old osage fence posts.  They are checked really deep, but the wood is incredibly strong and the rings are pretty thick.  I haven't tackled one yet, but soon.

George

Thanks!

Oh this is COOL!
Of course I'm to late for this year,... BUT NEXT YEAR I'M IN!!!!

What a GREAT idea!
Honestly, we used to exchange gifts on Christmas Eve at my grandmother's house for YEARS,... unfortunately that has pretty much ended with things the way they are with some jobs lost in our family of relatives.  The kids get stuff though and that's nice.
I think I'm going to make some presents next year for one or two of them,.... some of them would appreciate it,...others would rather a new ipod or soemthing??  hahaha.

Again,... this is a great idea!!!

I didn't know if I would get fussed at for opening it early.  They were out of the box before the mailman was out of the driveway.

I love them!!!  They are so cool.  I am trying to learn how to flint knapp so it makes them even better.  I plan on getting a display box and mount them with some of the points that I have found.  I brought them to work with me and I have been showing them off to everyone.  Thank you so much.

I especially like the Totem Weight on the Atlatl....a nice touch...Nothing wrong with your Craftsmanship Jonathan...anyone would have been proud to receive this! I will probably never get the hang of throwing this anyways...not too coordinated.... ;) But it will look really good along with the Knife I received last year...the Tomahawk I got from Pappy the Year before... They all dress up my one Wall in my Bedroom....along with many Points and Artifacts I have collected!

Those are some awesome gifts everyone. Great craftsmans ship on everything. :)  Lulyn Got her gift from Pat B  for Christmass and all our jaws dropped as she opened it up. Her and her father Kieth just kept admiring his incredible craftsmanship on a fantastic reed/bark basket quiver that he made her. he even sent a pair of neck knives for both of us. Lulyn has been working through the holidays and tomorrow as well. Hope to get her settled down for some pics soon.  Thanks again Pat. She is going to right as soon as she gets a chance. She just got home and is on call tonight for the hospital so going to bed early. She has the quiver very nicely hanging on her first elk rack. ;D

Now I really love Pat B!!!
Whoa...I really love the quiver I received for the christmas exchange. It surpasses any expectation I may have had for a gift I would be receiving.  I mean from a primitive bunch of folks. Ha! Ha! I had no idea that I would be so very blessed. It is a most awesome work of art.
Keenan says it is just too pretty to use, but I say no way, I haven't had a quiver of my own before and I am going to definetly use this one and it will be a show stopper where ever I go. :) I also really love the neck knive I also recieved. Sorry no pic yet, but we will get one posted, we forgot the knives out in the shop when we took the pics of the quiver. I am gonna love wearing my neck knive hunting and to rendevous, also if Keenan gets himself in a pickle or all tied up out in the woods, I can cut him loose...........Humm........well maybe ::) Ha! Ha!
Thank you again, Pat, it is truly a gift to be cherished. LuLyn  P. S. It is hung with pride on my very own elk rack!!

Holy cow mine is finished, I didn't think I was ever going to get it right, but I did it. Haven't made one of these in 4 years, so it took a lot longer to get my bearings than I thought it would, mostly because I didn't have all the stuff I used to use to make them. Sorry to be obscure, I was so excited to be finished I almost posted photos, but the recipient is just going to have to wait a little bit longer  >:D

I'm also happy to say that I got a nice ironwood stave just before I left for Xmas.  I haven't posted any pics, cause I haven't taken any yet.  The stave is appreciated though.  Ironwood is not something I can collect here in CA.   Ron

Glad you like it Ken.
That is the second knife I have made.  First fillet knife.
The bamboo handle was stained a bit with Black Walnut hull stain.

Did not know that you made knives as well when I started it.

That blade could use a good polishing.  I am not set up to do that yet.

well ,mine finally went out priority this morn. now a hop skip and two jumps and hopefully a fine gentleman will be pleased

I hate to break the bad news, Ken, but somehow that fine gentleman got shafted and the package arrived at my house by mistake.  Inside were two very fine bows but each had a glaring flaw....no signature from the Master Bowyer.  I don't care, I'm keeping 'em!!!!

Hey All,
So it looks like it has been a success for all.  We only had one snafu and that seems to have been fixed.  If you have NOT received a gift will you please send me a P.M.  If you have NOT sent your gift also please send me a p.m.
Thanks guys!
Do you all think it was enough of a success to do again next year?
Title: Re: CHRISTMAS EXCHANGE
Post by: coyote088 on January 11, 2011, 09:37:03 pm
It has most definately been a success!  What beautiful work the members of this site have gifted to others.
I would suggest for next year that we have the draw earlier, say Sept 30th so that the cut off date to send could be early December.   This way most gifts should make it to thier giftee before Christmas and the members could open them at the same time, December 25th!
Title: Re: CHRISTMAS EXCHANGE

I would second the earlier start, and add how much I have enjoyed following this exchange. I will admit to being more than a little intimidated by what I have seen. Truly awesome tallend and aweinspiring generosity.
Title: Re: CHRISTMAS EXCHANGE

I'm definitely in again for next year and agree with the earlier start date. I was also wondering what everyone would think about having everyone that enters putting down a few things they are interested in? Not that the gift maker would be locked into making one of those things if they have a clear idea, but I know for myself I wasn't sure on what I wanted tomake at first and I saw some other people struggling with the same issue. So if everyone gave 2 or 3 things they were interested in it could get some ideas flowing for the makers. Just an idea. Great job this year though on setting this up!

The waiting has an end and was it worth!
When I came home from work, a tube was lying on the table. A customs sticker on it made me asking my wife if its the Christmas Tade item. "Seems to be!", she answered. I was very, very happy, when I opened it up to find a cedar flute inside. First I thought arrows could be inside. I didn`t wear my my glasses, so I couldn`t exactly read what was written on the customs sticker. I like these native flutes very much and I bought one for my daughter 3 or 4 years ago as a present, but didn`t buy one for me on that Powwow .
Michael C., I thank you so much for this flute. its something I really dreamt of for years! The smell of the cedar, the inlays, the buffalo and last but not least the arm tone.
Thanks again, I`m proud to call it "Mine".
Regards Uwe

Just got home a few minutes ago.
There was a large tube waiting for me.  From Kennan. ;D ;D ;D
WOW! is all I can say.  I think we are all aware that Kennan is a not only a ture craftsman but also an artest.

WOW! He sent me a steel ( crooked arrow shaped ) bow rack.  A large knife made from a file and 6 ( war head ) arrow points.
I think we opened it upside dowm.....   We did not find the note until everthing was out of the tube.

As I was pulling the bow rack out my son said " it's a harpoon".  When it was almost all the way out my wife said "no it's a wind vane".
Untill it was all the way out I did not know what it was.
It was at that point that I realised that there were other thins there as well and found the knife and and arrow heads.

Thanks Keenan.  Someday we have got to meet up some place.

I bit of a hurry right now. My son's Kung Fu class starst at 7:00PM.
Will get some pix up this weekend.

This will take several post.  We have a dial-up connection out here in the boonies.

The arrow heads. Kennan calls them "war heads".  May have to declare war... on rabbits.

The arrow rack.  Bows are hung in an up-right manner.

All three together.
The bow rack has little pins at each crook.

Now where to hang it????

Thanks Kennan.  Look forward to meeting Yall at the classic.

If you got better pix of my gift please post them.  My pix just dont do them justice.

VERY Cool 8)
The points look like 'forkers'. Type of broadhead used to shoot at the horses of the enemy. :-\

That's so freakin cool! Wonder how those points fly?  I'll go in the Christmas exchange next year if Keenan draws my name! ;)

Glad you like them David,  The war heads that I've made before have all flown real well and they will stop in the brush very well. Great for birds, squirrels and small game. The only draw back that I have found is that if you catch one tine on something real hard like a rock it will often snap the tip due to side torque. Let me know what you think of them.

10-4 Keenan.
I like them war heads.  Will see what the rabbits think of them. :D
Everyone I have shown the knife to just loves it.  I loves it to.  Going to sharpen it up real good. ;D
Found a place to hang the bow rack.  Took three day but the wife told me last night " I guess it will ok for you to hang your bows on the rack.  But I dont want you to try and turn the house into some kind of MAN CAVE!"  I just love that woman.  ;D

See you at the Classic Kennan.
