I've heard comments that it's a bad idea. Say you have a bow that's lighter than you want but you don't want to pike it: would sinewing and tempering be alright? Is there anything that I should watch for or avoid?
-
Sounds OK to me. Of course, you'd want to temper it before you sinew it.... ;D
I guess adding a backing strip of wood is not an option?
-
What kind of wood?
-
I would first try a slight reflex and a slight recurve along with the tempering. Might as well as long as you've got it hot. This could increase draw weight without the added weight of sinew. The benefits from sinew are not free.

I'm sinewing a tempered, bamboo backed bow right now. I just saw one and shot it this past weekend. It shot good.
-
Eddie just curious about sinewing the boo backed bow. Is it under weight , damaged, or is it for performance?
-
Jesse, It lifted a splinter in the working section of the upper limb. Robustus told me how to do it and he just fixed one the same way. I shot it Saturday and he said the weight increased by 5#.

I didn't know you could lay sinew down ontop of bamboo. Do you have to remove the rind completely - I mean sand it so it is free of rind and rough it up a bit?
-
Steve, just remove the rind. I also smoothed down the ridges. James said there is no need to rough it up. Just size it a few times, I'm doing it 4 times. And then lay the sinew on like you would normally do. , I'm using real hide glue and not Knox. This is basicly a modified Horn Bow, now. I'm going to cover it with a 5' Bull snake skin I got from Nate when I'm through.

Keep us posted on how it turns out

Xin- I usually add a little reflex, but too much and I can't hit a barn at four steps. As for recurves, that's a no go. The bow is already narrow tipped. String tracking would be impossible! Of course, I only sinew the inner sections of limbs. Where mass doesn't hurt anyone ;)
Thanks for the example Eddie, can't wait to see some photos :).
