I'm almost finished tillering a bend in the handle hickory flat bow. Its my first with hickory. Currently its around 40lbs at 26". top limb has 1.5" set after unstringing and the bottom 1". I still have to take a few scrapes on the top mid limb and final sand.
Which limb should I scrape to even out the set on each limb? I'll take pictures tonight.

Make the stiffer limb the bottom limb.

personaly i wouldnt worry about it
sounds like you have the stiffer limb at the bottom already
call it done and shoot it as long as the tillers good

Took a few scraps off the stronger limb...set is about even now. Battery is dead on the camera...Tomorrow I"ll narrow the tips down to near 1/4 inch.
I'm pretty stoked about this bow...actually the heaviest wood bow I've gotten to full draw without major set or breaking. My first hunting weight bow. Shoots pretty accurately also. Just need to start on a set of hunting arras for it.

Specs are 57" nock to nock...Pulling 40lbs @ 26".
1.25 inches wide at the middle 2 inch handle. 2" long fades out to 1 5/8" wide...then straight taper to 1/2" nocks....set is just under 2" each limb after unstringing and settles down 1" after resting.
This bow came from a hickory board a member on here named wildman sent me...very gracious of him. The board started out 58" long 1.75" wide and a little under 0.5" thick.
This is my first bow from hickory...had a maple bow blow up in my face yesterday.
Here are a couple pictures. Comments welcome...I need feedback on my first hunting weight bow :)

I think you've taken a very difficult design and pulled it off quite well.
Just being super picky since you've ask for a little feedback, the top tip is a little stiff about 3 or 4 inches back but there may be a little natural reflex that I'm seeing. This is giving a little more added pressure on the bottom limb; but you probably already know this and I'm sure it will be fine the way it is.
That's one hard-hitting design if done properly and I think you've pulled it off.

Looks like a good bow. Congratulations with it! Tiller looks pretty good to me, if it's shooting well, I'd enjoy the bow. Don't see many people making arrows that long but I'm curious about them - seems like a lot of aboriginal people use long arrows like that. How is it shooting - do you have it fletched? Doesn't look like it in the picture...

The arrow is a 47" straight grained poplar dowel I found at lowes 3/8" thick.
Its fletched flu flu style...I plan on refletching it and put a self made trade point on it and call it a wall hanger

Very nice bow can't wait to see it finished. Very similar to one of Tim's bows in TBB4. Hows it shoot?

Took the plunge into needle tips last night...used my trusty fiskars scissors and scraped each tip down to 1/4" without testing the strength...strung her up and pulled to full draw.
IT WORKED!!! I was kinda scared making the tips that small but they are holding just fine...heat treated the bow also last night...added a little too much reflex into one limb though.
Will it hurt the bow to heat correct the over reflexed limb down to 2 inches of reflex?
I plan on backing with hemp thread after re tillering.

I would re tiller first and shoot it a little,some may pull out and then you will be wishing you didn't take it out. :) Can't wait to see her all finished up.

Just finished retillering the bow. Heat treated each limb for 30 minutes and the next day I applied a hemp thread backing in bundles like sinew. I used Titebond. Didn't feel like paying the extra dollar for a 16oz bottle of TBII. Worked awesome though.
One thing I majorly screwed up was heating in 7" of REFLEX into one limb and 3" into the other!!!! I had to heat the reflex back down to 3".
The weight gain feels like 10lbs or more. I've pulled it to 26" a few times. Its not shot in yet or a finish put on yet. But right after unstringing it is dead flat...no set. And the bottom limb has retained 1.5" or reflex while the top limb has retained 0.5" of reflex 15 minutes after unstringing. Bottom limb seemed to be much stronger after heat treating...top limb didnt need but 20 or so light scraps here and there to even out some flat spots.
I am amazed at the feel of this bow now...braced at 5.5" the string tension feels much tighter...there is a nice "twang" when the string is plucked. I really like hickory now :). Awesome wood to work with.
