I need to get some bow woods that i can't seem to get locally. Does anyone know of an online resource to buy bow specific staves or does anyone know where i can get some in the phoenix area? I'm new to this so i dont want osage or any other expensive wood that i will likely destroy.

 thanks, Mike

Red oak boards from home depot or lowes work great!

So do the hard maple boards.  Hopefully that helps.

local sawmills can also be a resource for board bows of even logs for staves and will have a larger variety, however Lowes/HD probably will be the cheapest option

Also another vote here for red oak boards as a great beginners wood. I followed sam's excellent instructional page with lots of pictures that walks through making a bow starting with picking the right board at the store...

I used hand tools to do it and it only took me about 3 or 4 evenings of work and was well within my minimalist budget.

Not the most primitive of bows, but a complete novice like myself was able to follow the instructions and ended up with a decently tillered 50# bow that as far as I can tell seems to shoot well.

Sam's build-a-along is great...minus the FG tape.  If you go the route of that build a long and feel you need to back your board I would opt for burlap, silk, or even cotton canvas instead.  Phoenix huh?  I'm in Tucson, holler at me if you need some help.

http://pinehollowlongbows.com/ Pine Hollow are advertisers and you will never find better people to deal with. I have ordered other places and received garbage. Now if I need wood I pick it up myself or order from Pine Hollow.
