Title: Maidu style sinew backed ERC
Post by: jcougar on April 30, 2007, 01:28:21 pm
Here's a bow I modeled after a Maidu replica that Steve Allely made(which is in the Western Indian Bows chapter in TBB1).  There's also a similar bow on the AMNH website.  Anyway,  it's ERC, 44" long, 42" long ntn.  It is 1 5/8" at the rabbit hide wrapped handle, and 1 7/8" wide at mid limb.  The tips measure 3/4" wide at the nocks.  Draw weight is around 52# @ 24".  It holds about 2 1/2" of just-unbraced reflex.

how thick is the wood (less the sinew) ?? reason I ask is that I have an ERC "board" that a buddy planed to X" thickness.....I'll have to see how thick it is. but now have a good use for it. thanks for the inspiration !

great bow !!

Love them short bows! Working on a Modoc 48" one myself. If I ever get time to finnish it I will put her up here.

Nice job! How does she shoot?

Thanks for all the compliments!  I would love to make a few more of these, but my sinew supply is nearly depleted.  It's a pretty good shooter, and decently accurate for is length.  Honestly, I haven't experienced any of the accuracy shortcomings that most people claim go along with this style.  As far as thickness minus the sinew...I would say about 7/16" at midlimb, and about 5/8" at the handle, but that is just an estimate.

Have you talked with Steve Allelly? Met him at Glass Buttes knapp In about a month ago. He had a Hupa, Maidu and Modoc bows with him allong with a bunch of replica arrows with him he showed us. Nice guy too.

Those Hupa bows are even thinner than the Maidu bows. He really does a great job on them. Saw a few of the Modoc bows in use and have to say at hunting ranges they are as accurate as longbows and seem to toss an arrow at about the same speed as a simmilar weight longbow if not a bit faster.

Cant wait to finnish up my Modoc bow!

Bad news... It somehow broke underneath the sinew.  I was shooting it earlier when I heard a loud pop.  After a close examination, I noticed a split running down the side of the bottom limb.  But, there is good news!  I remove the sinew from the faulty stave and I'm going to apply it to a new one as soon as I can get it prepped.

How you going to seperate te sinew from the back of the bow? Can you just soak the bow in water and have the glue disolve?

J, was that a stave or board? Can you tell why it broke? ???
I love your attitude. It if breaks, salvage what you can and make another.  Now! that's primitive archery!  ;D   Pat

To peel off the sinew, I just boke the bow over my knee(with the back facing me).  Once the wood is broken all the way through, I just slide a knife between the wood and sinew.  If you are careful, the whole back can be peeled off in one peice.  Next, I tie the new stave into the desired amount of reflex.  To re-apply, I wet the wood side of the sinew, apply hide glue to it and the new stave, place the sinew on the stave, and wrap them with string.  This method is very similar to how most people apply rawhide.

That was a pretty bow. I had one blow up on me the other year (probably my fault in tillering since it was one of my first). Your bow looked like it was mostly sapwood. Did you have any heartwood left in the belly? Good luck on your next one.

Kev.K,
Were you just stateing, that you love plains bows,or referring to a Maidu bow,as a plains bow?The Maidu, were a north eastern,Ca people. The different bands stretched from, the Sacramento Valley, all the way up to plumas and lassen counties. My mother, was born on the Pine ridge Sioux Rez,but i was raised around, and adopted by the Honey Lake valley Maidu.

I thought id bring this thread back up,as it pertains a bit to my weekend.I was looking at the Original bow that this back decoration, was copied from.I lived about 50 yrds from where it was housed,at one time, and never got a chance to see it then.Supposedly,it was used and was evidence in a murder trial,at the end of the 19th century.IE,that translates to,it was used to kill a white man.LOLHad it been used to kill another NDN,there wouldnt have been any trial in a courtroom, for it to be used as evidence.

I've been thinking about trying a bow like that.  I tried drying out a carrotwood stave but definitely wasn't going to work.  I'm wondering what some good options would be for making a bow like that?
