I think it's important to remember that reflection upon the past is one way to look forward to a better future.  I have always enjoyed the Classic in Tennessee.  For myself it's always like long ago, coming home after serving a hardship tour while I was in the Army.  it's a feeling hard to express.  Words are difficult to come by when talking about the folks who come to Twin Oaks to shape wood, rocks, and lives.  I'm more greatful my children will grow up around my friends at Twin Oaks.  In todays world it's a rare thing to see people who live life in a simple yet honest and free way.

So as I look forward to the Classic coming our way in a few months I like to reflect on the treasure of the past.  I hope you enjoy them as we take a walk down memoryt lane.

Jon,  thanks for all the photos, most of all thanks for the kind words you said about Twin Oaks. We all are so happy to see new faces and especially happy to see our returning families who have made Twin Oaks Classic what it is today. I'm sure we will have rain but I pray it won't be as much as last year. Just remember it was the 13th and now all of us are looking forward to the 14th. Thanks again for sharing the memories..... Joanie B. :)

Post by: cracker on January 27, 2011, 08:54:17 pm
Miss Joanie I sure hope I'm on the adopted list I sure do enjoy spending my week a year in the holler. The only thing wrong with the classic is that I didn't find about it a lot sooner.
I really enjoy the bows flint knapping shooting and other activities but the real chest of gold is the people and all the spontaneous stuff that happens. Where else would you get to meet people from all over this great nation and indeed from all over the world. It seems theese folks are as diverse as people could possibly be and yet when they come to Twin Oaks they are suddenly the same. Thanks for listening to my ramble. "Cracker"Ronnie

EL for some reason, I think we will hit it off just fine ;D.  And Pat, thanks you, I know there will be many friends made, and another chance to meet some of the one's I met at your place two years ago.  This has been a dream of mine for more years than I can count and I am so looking forward to it that I think I will make it an extended stay(if Pappy don't get tired of looking at me), get there early in the week and leave late the next week.  This will certainly be the vacation and dream come true for me.  Let's hope everything works out this time. So get ready people, a Virginian is going to be in the house. :o ;D

C/Mon Pat....me and that big Teddy Bear ae the easier ones to tolerate....just wait till a Good Ole Georgia Boy...a Transplanted Yooper...and a Virginian get together...and drink some of Ronnie's Peach Nectar....ought to be fun.... ;D

Post by: stringstretcher on January 30, 2011, 06:54:43 am
El D sounds like you might have seen something like that before.  As for the nectar though, I would have to pass on that.  After 7 years, and 3 months of sobriety, it just ain't going to happen that way at least....I have been down that road, and trust me when I say, I will never go that same road again,......ever.

Sometimes a feller just forgets! ::)  As a witness, I saw Mr. El D spend a TREMENDOUS amount of time building a bow last year.  The saw dust from all that sanding that rascally bow was most knee deep along with the BS that was always taking place! ;D  Did however enjoy the palaver!  Indian Joe (Straight Talker)

Charlie...I respect that....my Wife has been Sober for 4 years and 3 months now...I don't partake in the Spirits but two or three times a year...I have and hope to never have an Addiction to Alcohol.... I normally let my Hair Down a little at pappy's...but I always keep it clean....under control..... O:)

Joe...are you telling Me that I was working that wood to the point of Spontaneous Combustion....some were telling Me things that were a bit inappropriate...even for a Primitive get Together.... :P..... ;D..... >:D

Just come on down this year.  I know there are a couple of pastors there every year to hook you up with the I do's and then into the woods to shoot a round.  Back to the napping pit and bow shed for the reception.  Sounds like a perfect wedding idea to me.  And honeymoon to boot.

After my son and I found our air mattress floating in about 2" of water we gave up on our tent as well.
We "Stuffed" it all in the trunk and got ourselves a cheap room for the last night.

Hot shower and a dry bed felt good :D

If it gets as bad as last Classic....You can come sleep in the Bed of My Truck too....the Water would have to be 4 foot deep in the holler before it reached the Bed....and then with the size of theTires on it...we'd just float away like a Raft

Small tent - about 4ft x 7ft.  But I'm thinking of gettin' one of those military style hammock tents so I can stay off the ground.

Mike and I both snore, so I don't think sleeping next to eachother is gonna happen.   ;)

I am going to pencil it in AGAIN for this year. Still need to get down and shake Pat B's hand and catch up with Pappy and a few others that remember me. Depends on the weather though, since I'll be motorycyling down, I'd like to request some dry weather this time around  ;) .... although my requests haven't seem to work out in the past.

This event seems to have "Cloverdale" luck when it comes to precipitation.

I sure hope you can make it this year, Mickey. We've known each other too long to have not met!  ;)  Even though rain is a tradition at the Classic(14 years out of 14 years) I'll start my no-rain dance when we get close to time.  ;)

Flights alone for me are about €800 plus!  (that's at least a grand, in Yankee currency ;) )

So unless I get a relatively well paying job or win the lottery (might help if I actually played it though...), I doubt I'll make it this year as well :(

Looking forward to seeing the pic's though :)

Pappy, Twin Oaks, Tennessee Classic yup shore sounds good to me... (a lot of other folks too) I was thinking I'll probably get my 5yr pin this year. I remember my first Classic and was told that it can be addictive, I wonder if it was the excitement of building bows with a bunch of other Dudes and sometimes a Dudette, or was it the bull sessions around the fire pit, maybe it was watching some great Nappers creating some magic from a piece of stone, It could of been the music in the evening. singing, picking, and the harmonica duels. maybe all the food, ya that might do it. how about checking out all the vendors that's one of my favorate things, camping with some really neat folks, maybe. I think it was shooting the practice range thru the hills and the compition ranges, problem there is ya get caught up in the views. Heck I think it is all of thoes things, yea I think so..

well its about a 12 hour drive fo the wife and i
potty breaks, well were like you Mike
when we get gas,we go potty  ;)
hope gas prices dont hit that $5 mark like they are talking
if it does then we need to bring the car adn not the truck
which means alot of things get left home, and i dont get to bring anything back
like rock and wood, you know living supplies
wife and i have been talking
and i am pretty sure she wants to either tent it
and IF it rains, then we will sleep in the truck
well that too depends on gas prices

He's probably chilling and going to suprise us this year with a couple new bows, I've got a little suprise for him, Ryan carries a Chris Ireland Mountain Man folding knife, I don't think I have ever seen him without it. (Jealous Yea I guess I was)  was is the optimum word, because I now have a Chris Ireland Mountain Man folding knife like Ryans, Yea baby, but mine is Damascus steel. Check this out Ryan, I'll show it to you at the World Famous Tennessee Classic,

Bunch of us are going down to Chris in a couple weeks an see how much metal we can ruin :o I mean work into some beautiful tool. Wow Bob, Chris mentioned that you folks were going to beat up on some steel. Pappy mentioned at Presque Isle shoot that we could have a hawk throw at the Classic, I hope he remembers? I know that he's going to be very busy, but we could help him. I had cut a couple weeks ago two 30in. dia. cottonwood pieces that is about 6in thick and coated them with some kind of stuff that the saw-mill uses to keep wood from checking. I could bring one of em with me if the Classic crew could use it... I'm really glad that You and Ryan might bring Chris with you guys, I think that he has some hawks and knifes that he could bring, and maybe have something for Knocker to take a look at. Mullet ask if I was going to be at the Florida State Shoot?, not this year Mullet,... It's always great to see ya and read about all your exploits. Chuck

Pappy, Ray and Sharon (fiddler ray) from Florida has been to the Classic for the last two years and park their Airstream next to me.. No problem bringing the Hawk Log (don't know what they call it) we'll still need the tripod to set it on. we can use those poles that weren't used to set up the tepee last year(ha ha). I'm just getting started throwing the Hawk and Knife but I'm sure there will be other folks that will enjoy a little compition. SO EVERYBODY BRING YOUR HAWKS AND KNIFES. Chuck

I made this set especially to go on the raffle table at the classic. It is a locust Eastern Woodland style bow pulling about 40# with single side nocks and a rattan handle wrap, four hill cane self nocked arrows with Eastern Woodland style fletching, three of the arrows have target points and one has an obsidian point and a woodland style basket quiver with a braded sisal shoulder strap. The obsidian point is hafted with pitch glue and wrapped with sinew and the fletching are wrapped with sinew. All sinew wrappings are sealed with pitch varnish and the bow has a heat treated belly and is sealed with hand rubbed bear grease.
Bring your bucks to the Classic and fill my jar!!!  ;)

Hi,

I have been looking forward to getting back to the Classic for a long time...even talked my sweetie of 40 plus years to come too...  If anyone has an interest in how a NA Style flute is put together I will be glad to demonstrate...will bring a routed flute that I will work on during the weekend and will also bring a branch flute along with gouges and tuner and all the stuff to put a flute together with...

If anyone would like to learn how to play a flute I will be more than happy to give lessons for FREE...if you already have a flute and want to learn how to play this is your chance...bring it along...

I will bring flutes to check out too and sometimes trade or sale (with any sales I will donate a portion back to the classic)

Think it's gonna rain?

Rand
(To see my flutes check out Catahoulaflutes.com)

Rand, I'll bring my flute.  I bought 5 or 6 years ago on visit to California.  I played around with it for a summer.  But the sound is so soft you can't hear it from the other side of a bonfire.  Maybe you can make suggestion on how to turn up the volume.

Hi Dave and Pat,

Dave I will be glad to check it out...could be a tight flue...hard to blow or easy?

Pat...a Gurka is a cigar...you will like it...won't blow up on you!  I will also bring my problem bow to ask your advice on and by then maybe my ironwood that I need to learn how to flip a tip on...I need all the advice I can get!

Rand
(I certainly will be putting some money in the raffle jar.)

Rand, my flute blows easy enough, but it just doesn't have much volume.  Blowing harder doesn't seem to increase the volume either?

Dave,

Hmmm, bring it so I can see how the flue was crafted...might be a quiet flute cause it wants to be!...just never know 'bout them rascally flutes!  BTW...what key is it in?

Isn't there an old Roman Empire recipe for cooking gator over a fire pit?  Let's see, first you stuff some crawfish in a bullfrog, then stuff the bullfrog into a duck, then the duck into a snappin' turtle, then the turtle into the gator?

 ;D ;D ;D

Oh yeah...then add butter  *burp*   ;D

Can ALWAYS use burlap sacks...what else ya gonna tote possums out of the woods in?

Seriously, I'd be interested in some if ya can bring em. Hard to find burlap around here anymore. I'll take however many ya feel like letting me take possession of. haha

I am wanting to attend and bring my 7 year old son.

What do I need to bring to attend?
Are there other kids that attend?

I have a about 2- 55 gallon drums full of eastern red cedar scrap pieces in various thickness and size and lots of palm leaves for braidng rope or other projects. Would folks want these things for free? Just want to pass em on, but not to the landfill

Chuck, I may bring some knifes/sheaths I've made...don't know for sure. There is no way one can get compensated for the amount of time making a sheath and/or knife takes...most people wouldn't pay that unless you selected your hourly rate to be under minimum wage. I still have a lot to learn about knife making and sheaths...enjoying them just as a hobby right now. If you start selling stuff, afraid it won't be fun anymore.  :) Thanks for the compliment Bear! ;)

That's so true I did some blacksmith demos at the Texas rannassance festival and I'd work my butt off making things and no one wanted to pay for the price I wanted for them but they don't know how many hours it takes to make knives and what not I still managed to sell around 300$ worth of stuff that's not to bad for a season at the TRF
Title: Re: 14TH Tennessee Classic
Post by: _Jon_ on March 30, 2011, 07:24:46 pm
I know what ya mean GregB.  I have made several knives and a lot of folks ask what they sell for.  I tell em I don't sell because no one would be willing to pay the price I'd want in return.  I have found it easy to trade however for something others make.  As an example I traded for a new knife sheath for a set of arrows to a really good friend.  He got a dozen arrows for a knife sheath that fit a knife I made.   Both he and I seem really happy with the trade.  I think I'll bring a few knives to the Classic this year along with a few bows to see what kind of trade I can get.  :-)

See ya this weekend Gregb.  I'll be the guy building the new seats in the knapping pit area.  If the seats turn out like I hope they do I'm gonna ask Pappy if he'd like me to redo the fire pit area by the Knapping Pit area and build bench's around the fire pit.  That fire pit is his pride and joy and I'd sure like to see it real perdy'd up for him and those who come to visit.

Hey Pappy, you need a cook? The wife and I will be in on Wed like last year. For anyone that doesn't know, last I talked to Dana a week or so agohe said he and the wife aren't coming, same with JesseS from Wisconsin, I guess I'll be representing the YOOPERS and the CHEESEHEADS. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again. Anyone want me to bring some fresh salsa?
Eddie, I'd chip in towards some fresh oysters(kinda hard to come by up North here)and believe me you'll never see me cookin one of them.
For me it's 25 days today, hope it goes by fast. The weather he is still 30-40 deg calling for snow/rain this weekend and it still drops down low in the evening, I'd like to be somewhere I can go without wearing a jacket.

I NEED HELP!!!!!  I am set to go ;D ;D But my wife is hesitant to let "her baby boy" go.. How do I convince her to let him go?

Also I will be taking my 94 Camry instead of the mini van small utility trailer, so I wont be able to bring cooking wood.  The good thing is that the Camry is cheaper on gas...  I just love that car.  I bought it for 2K, has 224,000 miles and drives like a dream....

It is the best kind of car to have which is a paid for car ;D ;D ;D

Anyway, that is my dilemma.. Help if you can O:)

Tell her I said to let him go. ;D
Just tell her he will have the time of his life and meet a lot of new friends.  It is the perfect place to bring a young man or lady.
As far as wood, Pappy haas plenty of wood, not apple, or peacan, but oak and som hickory normally.

I second what Bear said this is the kind of place where a kid can have a ball. You don't have to worry about them everyone in camp will help keep an eye on him. Ron

Bring the wife as well. :D

Tell her that we all just turn our kids loose and let them go feral for a few days.  It is good for them. ;D
They gather up in packs and just run wherever they please. Rain or Shine.

When we first started going to the Classic I had the same such worries concerning my son who was about 10 at the time.  He is now 17.  I thought I had to know where he was at all times.  I was wrong.  After a while he had made friends with a bunch of other kids and they were doing their on thing.  Nothing has ever happened. NEVER.  The kids do not get out of eye shot of groups of adults very often.  And, they stay in their packs.

Being a couple of extra pairs of shoes and socks.  They tend to find themselves in the creek fairly often.

Aight, yeah I know that mall. Used to go down there occasionally when I lived in Clyde. I think now that Jonathan isn't going to be able to go, I may leave after the wife and kids go to bed Wed. night. Probably leave around 11 or 12, that'd put me coming through that area around 1 or 2am. Shooting to be there right after sun-up. Only stopping for gas, and might grab a biscuit in Nashville before I get there. I'm wierd like that. I'm ready to go to bed (never make it by then) at 10:00, but if I have to drive any distance, Id rather drive at night than the day. I get sleeeepy driving during the day.

Yep, wife is from eastern NM. We left here in NC at 2:00pm after finishing up all of our visits here, on Christmas day 09, to make a surprise visit to her parents. Wife started driving and drove until 2:00am and pulled over somewhere in Louisianna and we switched off and I drove from 2am til 1pm the next day when we arrived, stopping only for gas. Roughest part was right at twightlight/graylight before day break, a few hours west of Dallas. Once it got daylight I was ok again.

Try NC to NM, gas breaks only........with a 6y/o, 2 4y/o's and a 6 month old :D.

It aint all the way to Cali or the Pacific Northwest, but 1500miles, gas breaks only is the furtherest Ive traveled on land.

Ron it helps when you leave when it's nap time....they're asleep....they wake up and when they do, they have a few new odds and ends that they got for Christmas, atleast the car friendly ones to keep them busy, plus the wife packed each kid a bag full of coloring books and such, then it's night time before long and they fall asleep again and stay asleep for the bulk of the drive (through the night), then wake up the next day and have their new goodies to keep them occupied again. The baby was 6months old, she was good. We'd hop back in the seat beside her and feed her and change her at the gas stops. Luckily the 'bad' diapers were close to gas stops.

Anyway, back to the classic.......Bear....I sure do wish I had the time frame you did on your count down. ;D

Hey you guys, sorry Cody and I will not be going to the Tennessee Classic the year. Cody is going to be 16 years old, pretty big time in a young mans life. Things he would like to do, not that bowing is not fun!! He has been doing JUI JITSU twice a week, he is doing ROTC in school and loves every minute. Time not important, life very.

I will miss everything and everyone, I have been at the Tennessee Classic for over 4 years now.  :'( :'( :'(

Venisonburger, even after you sent me the book and disk my flintnapping skills needs a miracle for me to pursue even the minimum ability, I'm a failure.. I've been shooting a lot of flintlock rifle and pistole. Wouldn't you think that at least I could dress my flints that I use in the guns. and on top of that we start fires with flint and steel,   those flints need tuned up every once in awhile also. I still love to watch you folks having fun.  Chuck

Wildman, I can handle the boat building class, I built a 21 ft wood frame canvas covered kayak some years back, funny thing was I traded it to a guy for primitive archery supplies, and that kinda started my interest in making a bow of my own.
Bear, I know what you mean! I have $300 in tires, another couple hundred in repairs on the car, and like Mike said the gas, who knows what that'll be this year, with another week they could jack it up another fifty cents!!!!, but I'll tell you what, it'll be the best money ever spent to come down and spend time with the gang at the classic.
Cha-ching, I think the wife and I were your neighbors last year and Brother Dan and Bubba were on the other side, but it sounds like we're moving to a different neighborhood this year, Jon is setting us up on the opposite side down further, hopefully we're welcome to stop by the old neighborhood and visit?
Ronnie, did you get my hint awhile back about getting some onions from ya this year? If ya can't swing it no problem.
My son turns 18 today! he made it to adulthood, we thank God for that. hard to believe since I still remember bouncing him on my lap.

Wow Feel the Love!!!
I here yall on Gas 8.1 Bigblock 37.5 gallon tanks at least 3 tanks for my short round trip w/ trailer in tow.  Can get to Pappy"s and back w/o Trailer on a tank and a half.  But really not complaining.  Can't think of much I'd miss it for.
1 more full day and about 4 hours Friday.
Hey Work I'm on vacation.

VB, your probably making a good move thanks to Jon, it did get a little crowded there but crowding is good because you don't need to walk so far to chat.  ($960 in tires and $65 in front end aliment CHA-CHING) The tire dealer said that I now can pull my 24ft camper at speeds exceeding  120 mph., so I told him LET'S DO IT.  Chuck

You guys are cracking me up,   As far as cost I have you all whooped. $208 in camper title & tags,  $235 in wheel bearings and deep cycle battery, $240 in food to stack the camper for a month, and I estimate about $1300 in fuel driving myself and all the supplies there. Then there is the other $1007 for Lulyn and Wade to fly down for the weekend.
Somehow I don't think I will be able to do this every year. But we decided this was our major vacation for this year and we were so impressed with Pappy,Greg, Jon ,Big A and all the others that came to Twin oaks to meet us back in October, that we feel it really is our extended family. I am almost done with projects and packing, Wades B-d is today and so I'm not sure if I'll have everything done to hit the road tomarrow or Friday.

Can't wait to meet Ya'll ,,,,,,,,as far as the priceless driving scenarios not sure any are brave enough to ride  4800 miles with me ::)

I have the important stuff ready(bows, arrows, sleeping bags) the rest I have to put together this weekend, I also have to pick up tomatoes, jalapeno and habenero peppers for the salsa and I'll whip that together on sunday after I get back from the inlaws Easter dinner, then monday we pack the car, tuesday I daydream through the day at work and at 4:30pm I'm Tennessee bound, We'll drive into the night and probably stop for a snooze when I can't keep my eyes open anymore, I envy people that can drive for hours on end without getting sleepy, I guess I'm like my son when he was little, if we wanted to get him to sleep we'd take him for a ride in the car and he'd go out like a light.

Ya'll have fun and don't poke your eyes out with those pointy sticks.  I'll see some of you in Hickory here in a few weeks.  There won't be any big tubes shot into the sky next year, so I'm making preliminary plans to be at the classic a year from now.

5 more minutes of work....going home, getting the oil changed in the truck, packing up, and heading out around 0330. Picking Pat up at 0600 and then TN bound. Shouldnt need that much time to get to where Im meeting Pat, but weather forcast says it's supposed to be rocking and rolling around that time, so will leave a little early.

Will not make it to the Classic.

Pray for my neighbors.  Several did not make it.

Hi,

Just went through a section of Georgia near Warm Springs...home after home demolished trees snapped off at strange heights...sometimes just two feet off the ground...sometimes up near the top...just thrown...power lines down everywhere, power companies out trying to put it back together, police looking for the missing...

Sure is nice to be alive and well in this world.  Would love to be there and hope everyone has a great time!

Back at work today.
Power came on at the house yesterday around 6:00 PM.
Phone lines are all down. Dont know when they will be working.
Lots of people still with out power.  My company sent two electric crews to help.

Where we live, in Lawrence County Alabama, there were more than one thousend homes destroyed.
The last account I heard was that 15 people in Lawrence County were killed. Some I knew very well.
I have seen tornado damage before...  But nothing like this.

Been running my chainsaw for the last two days.  Thousands and thousands of people helping out.
The clean up has just started.

David

Just a note to say we did make it home safely and are glad to be here. The classic was sunny for the most part and a great time to relax with familiar faces and new acquaintances, plenty to eat, buy, see, and do. I don't know where else you can see a 13year old banjo player and a 5 year old girl throwing a "hawk" at a target in the same place!
My gratitude to John Price for setting up our accommodations with Bear, and to Bear for allowing us to stay with him.
My only two regrets are, not being able to spend more time with a favorite friend, and not being able to say goodbye to everyone I wanted to due to the rain on Sunday morning when we pulled out.
For those of you that didn't make it, we wish you could have, for those who were affected by the dangerous weather we pray for you, and for those of you that made the Classic possible we thank you.
Until next year good health to everyone and we'll keep in touch thanks to PA

I think I put on 10lbs with some of the meals we took part in, Wed we enjoyed Crackers low country boil, shrimp, fish, corn, sausage and onions in a spicy peppery juice, wow, hard to find this kind of eats at a restaurant.
Thurs night was fried foods night, Ronnie did deep fried turkeys that El D injected with a marinade, there were chicken wings, deep fried squirrel, frog legs, bass, gar fish, fried cabbage, bbq bologna, fried corn on the cob, salsa and chips, hope I didn't forget anything.
Saturday there was the potluck supper and there was such an assortment of foods that I wouldn't know where to start, but following tradition Pappy and the crew did the bbq vension shoulders, I saw smoked sausage, potatoes, carrots and onions, pasta salads, lettuce salads, more salsa, corn, cornbread, mac and cheese, and things I didn't see cause I was way back in the line and I missed them before they ran out, but I'm not complaining cause I ate my fill, there were tons of desserts too, cakes, pies, ect. You'll see by the picture of the line that alot of people ate that night.
One thing that's for sure is we'll never starve at the classic
