Yeah, them Floridaniens sure can't take a little weather. ::) You guys have had another eventful winter again this year haven't you James? We have and we don't get half of what you guys get there in Boone.

Thumbring shooting. COOOOL!
-
after shooting and looking at the bow this weekend, the pics don't come close to doing the bow justice. i told eddie he should have a wall case made for the bow to show it off. everywhere we looked this weekend, james had cores and horn bows in various stages of assembly. you guys are in for many treats to come!
-

HE IS EVEN WEARING SHOES NOT FLIP FLOPS :o :o :o

Got home at 3 am this morning. I wanted to shoot it some more but it's raining. aero, it does take a BIG target at first shooting with a thumb ring. It really takes getting used to aiming all over again. I've got a lot of work to do. But, I was putting 5 arows in the target after a while.
Pat, I can handle 45 dgs after working in Alberta in -40. I almost got the flip-flops out. ;D TJ, I had to drop Cade off and it was about a 14 hour straight thru drive, maybe next time.
Thanks, Rebecca and James for a good, short weekend. I think I'll go polish up the thumb ring.
-
Where"s my bow James.I am on the way.Just kidding. That is one nice bow.
-
Great bow Eddie!!
If yer wondering,... I haven't worked up that bamboo-backed Ipe stave yet because my friend with his bandsaw, MOVED! haha
So I'm at a standstill with it...I'll post pics when I tackle it though!! ;) ;D ;D
-
Jason, all you need is a sharp, hatchet. Draw out your shape with a marker or pencil and then chop away down the edge. Then, clean it up with a Rasp and file, and go to scraping. I made my first Osage with a hatchet, pocket knife and small wood cleaver.
-
Just picked up a nice antique hewing head from an ax,.... gotta get a handle,... clean it up then go to town! :)
-
I love the bow. No snow ha? LOL. Jawge
-
Great looking bow, all I can say is SWEET. :)
Pappy
-
George,
There was still a little on the ground and more was coming Saturday. My Grandson got to play in it for the first time. He had never seen snow or been to the mountains.
-
Cool pictures. Can't wait to see what it looks like in person!
-
Great looking bow you lucky dog you. Two questions: what is the draw weight? and correct me if I'm wrong, the thumb ring is necessary because of the string angle? Man, with that little bow you will be able to hide in a lettuce patch.
-
Grunt, the thumb ring is a simple but ancient release aid. When using one you place the arrow on the right side of the bow for right handed shooting. When shooting regular style with 3 fingers the fingers open to the left. With the thumb(ring) it opens to the right so the arrow is shot from the right side. I don't think it has to do with string angle but with shorter bows finger pinch can be a problem and with a thumb ring it is not.
-
Eddie, that is a great experience for him. Jawge
-
Grunt;
With this bow and the way it is tillered, it is best to shoot with the thumb ring. If not, I have to turn it over and shoot with two fingers under the arrow. When James first called and said it was finished the bow was 58# @ 28". When I was shooting it it was sleeting a little and cold. The bow was then 52# @ 28". Down here in Florida yesterday with the temperature around 72, it was 55# @ 28". With the thumb ring I'm pulling it back close to 31" or 32". I'll take pictures of the thumb ring and finger placement when I get home.
George, his mother thought it would be an adventure and wonderfull experiance for him and it was. He wanted to stay with James.
-
Thanks for the reply. Looking forward to the picts.
-
Grunt, I'll have to do it tomorrow, it started raining a frog choker when I got home.
-
Here are some pictures of the thunb ring. Like Pat said, if you are right handed you put the arrow on the right side of the bow. Being left eye dominate , this actually se3ems to improve my shooting.
-
I was looking forward to those pictures too. I've wondered how the thumb ring worked (though I guess not hard enough to go research it). That's really slick. Thanks.
George
-
Eddie: Could you post a picture with an arrow, showing it's placement with the thumb ring.... Please
-
george, youd be surprised how few pictures there are of thumb rings in use. ive spent a few nights as i was trying to build one and use one properly, looking for pictures. most are old and out of focus. these pictures however, are excellent. i do second the motion for arrow on string picture
-
Eddie- how come you shoot right handed if you are left eye dominant? My parents recently gave me my childhood compound and it was a righty. ??? I do almost everything lefty (including shooting) except write and I'm thinking that must have been pushed on me when I was younger...
-
Jeff, I'm right handed and learned to compensate for being left eye dominate. I'll get a picture with the arrow placement tomorrow. You can see it in the picture James put up.
-
Looks good Eddie.
What I don't understand is why you're all bundled up like that when there's isn't even any snow on the ground :)
-
LOL, Marc. The snow was on the other side of the creek. Really, it wasn't that cold, except while I was shooting it and James trying to take pictures, it was sleeting. Standing there at full draw while James tried to focus the camera, with a thumb ring that didn't fit right, my thumb was going numb. We kept trying to get the arrow in the picture on the release, except Jame's reflexes have gotten slower the older he's gets.
-
That is one fine looking bow. Have fun!!!!
-
Great pics, cheers
Del
-
Here's some pictures of the arrow placement. No snow under the orange tree, Marc. ;D
-
Dam that's a fine lookin' bow.
-
It's the Serpentine Horse bow, made by James Parker.
-
id like to say thank you very much for posting those pics. may i save them for my referrence?
-
Help yourself. And if you need some kind of better picture, let me know.
-
Thanks Eddie I see now. Ever try a thumb ring with a longbow? I didn't know if the string angle would have anything to with the way it works?
-
Bill, never tried.
-
You can shoot a longbow with a thumb ring no problem-as long as the bow does not have a shelf. Many people say you can shoot the thumb ring with a left handed bow with a shelf but I can tell you it does not work well nor is it even good to practice that way. The hand position in relation to the arrow is such an important part of the shot and the shelf does not allow for proper hand placement.
Ed have you noticed a big increase in performance in the composite bow compared to a glass bow? I was also wondering if you had to "balance" the limbs after each stringing?
-
Eddie, that bow fits you like a glove! 8)
-
Eddie that is a cool bow. I would imagine it would work well in a turkey blind. Talk about ambush bow! The bend in that thing is rediculase.
Forgive my ignorance but what relation to James are you? He is obviuosly a very talented bowyer. Danny
-
Wow Eddie,.. this really is a beautiful bow! I kept looking at your "endless thumb ring" photos! hahaha :D
-
JBL, yes you have to balance the limbs, line the tips up. That's why I had to drive up and get it so James could show me how to do it without blowing the bow up. It is starting to develope a memory now. I've been shooting it everyday and leaving it strung. As far as performance it is equal or better than some of my Glass bows.
sidewinder, if we are related, it is pretty distant. The better looking Branch moved to Florida from N.C. in the early 1800's. But then again my Grandson was calling him Uncle James. ::) ;)
-
Thank you for the string-to-nock-to-hand photos. You are right, even on an informative site like Korean Archery they are tiny. I've been looking on the web and most miss that detail or are so small you can't make out the positioning. Oh, and that serpentine bow is gorgeous....
Very useful, thank you.

Man that bow is incredible! :o :o Is that one of those Tiffany rings that I've heard about? :D :D :D
-

That's odd because I made a leather grip for my Samick SKB 50 and incorporated a small shelf into my handle wrap. My arrow cast and accuracy out to 30 yards so far, has not been affected at all. Maybe I'm unconscoulsy concentrating more on a clean relese with my thumbring and thereby not having my accruacy and cast affected by having a shelf?
-
Keenan-the small shelf on the SKB 50, or other Korean bows is so small it is likie shooting off the hand anyway. What I should have said in my post is the pistol grip/shelf combo does not allow for the right hand placement and follow through.
Ed thanks for the info on the alignment. I am selling off some of my "Western" archery equipment so I can get a composite and like many including yourself I worry about balance and alignmenet so a BIG investment doesn't become a wreck. Once the bow develops memory will it still need to be balanced at every bracing?
-
James said it shouldn't unless there are large swings in humidity, or heat. Also If it is left unstrung for a long period of time it will start to curl back up. Then it will take a great deal of time to "train" or get it to unfold so you can string it.
-
:o ;D ::)
that is freekin awesome.. i want one of those..!!! who's selling them? >:D

Go to Classifieds and click on Huntworthy Productions.
-
Mullet,
In your thumbring pics that dont look like the same bow as the first one. The second one looks like glass....but couldn't find a description of the first one. What did James make that one from? Looks real nice ...any chance of gettin some close up shots of it please? It is obvious that he got the right wood, horn and sinew combo for it, by it's full draw profile, which is gorgeous.
rich
-
Rich, I used the Glass bow because it had a small grip and the thumb ring placement would show up better. I'll move it if anyone is offended by it. It was, honestly just for the visual.
James said he took pictures building the bow and would send them to me. I'll post them if there is an interest in it. There are a lot of pictures he posted on the "Composite" thread he had going of the same bow.
Scott, tell me what you want to see and I'll take pictures. The bow has a bamboo core, and Popular Siyas to cut down on weight. Sinew back and horn belly. The bamboo James showed me was the hardest Boo I hve ever seen.
-
Nice killer bow and sweet profile. I've wondered about those thumb rings myself, thanks for giving a lowdown on those.
-
just finished my thumbring. it came off the 8 ball beside eddies. now i just need to practice with it. i can honestly say, shooting with a thumbring is not easy.
-
Nice job Chris.
-
i still have a little more polishing to do on it.
-
Don't you feel pain? Your thumb draws vertical to the string. Later i will show my moose horn thumbring here.
