Been a spell since I have posted a bow, so figured I’d show ya this one. A friend approached me at Mojam last year and handed me a stave and says, ” Here ya go Timo, see what you can make outa this one”! I said “ well … uh…gee..uh …Thanks?” ( I was mumbling under my breath all the way to the truck.
I throwed that stave up on top of all the other unfinished projects and promptly forgot about it. It wasn’t until the blizzard hit us and socked us in for a good spell, that I ever thought about building any bows this year, but as the calling is, I started whittling wood. One afternoon, while I was watching some skins dry, I happened to see this old ugly wood tip sticking out, I grabbed it down and said, “ what the heck”.
Well two days later I had it pretty well whipped.
58” pin nocks/horn overs-52# @ 26”. 5 knot holes go plum through, and there were 4 worm holes all the way through also. I packed them with saw dust and shot them full of super glue. Figured it would be a bit rough in the hand but seems well mannered, and shoots a good arrow. I normally don’t like a real shiny finish but it just seemed to fit this bow, so I left it.
I dubbed this one, ”Trojan horse”

Beautiful :) :) Thanks for sharing! Joe

Wow! Thanks all for the nice words. O:) I guess I forgot to mention that the wood was Osage. I guess I take that for granted. :-\ I sometimes forget that others on here are not as lucky as some of us in the fact that we have great bow woods just outside our back door. Albeit full of knots.
This piece, (although with many challenges) was fairly simple to build. I feel compelled at times to post up such stuff maybe for the inspiration to some of the novice builders who frequent these pages. Kinda a "Don't be afraid to grab a knotty twisted up piece and give it a go" Just because it looks daunting. Even the worst looking piece, has a bow in it ...somewhere?
;)
Thanks again.

Great work on that bow Timo!

Beautifully done Timo....I love the character and the finish work is top notch!!!!

And thank you for that!! It's very inspiring and motivational to see what can be accomplished.
Stunning bow - perfect tiller - looks like it could strain spaghetti too, if you get caught without a collander ;)
Thanks for sharing Tim.
-
Very nice!

After seeing the pictures, my neighbor at MoJam showed me that stave as he was taking it to you, we had a good laugh. I figured you would get a bow out of it, but it is way better than I had envisioned. Incredible!! I would like to see his face, when he sees it.
Beautiful job!!

Fantastic work!

Mornin' Tim,
Looks like you made good use of your snow days there... :)
Good looking bow with a lot of character. Those funky staves are a challenge but the results ( when positive ;) ) are very satisfying. Nice job.
-
that there tim is exactly the type of bow i love. just enough bend in the handle to feel it give and full working limbs. excellent work
-

Thanks Tim, no sooner said than done. Great buildalond and tututorial, been wanting to learn how to do that for a long time. My first self bow, before I ever built one has this wrap aand I still just love it, perfect locator grip with a finger in each groove.. Thanks again. Kenneth

Hey Timo
with the blizzard and the wood stove burning it must have taken true compassion to resist a couple passes on the band saw and tossing that stave into the flames. Instead you have inspired another wood butcher back into my shop to make shavings. Love the full arc tiller of this bow! It seems incongruous with the first photo of the back with all the knots and swirling grain. Well done sir!
-
:o Wow that is awesome man.
-
Outstanding bow Timo! hardly any set, gorgeous to look at and wonderful tiller. You should get snowed in more often! ;)
-
very nice!!! love the handle as well.
-
That is a goodun Timo! I need to get some of that knotty, twisted, snakey osage out and give her a go..
