This bow was made for a trade with a hunter friend of mine. She harvested some caribou sinew from a hunt near the hydro dams in the centre/nothern part of Quebec. She wants a smooth bow for her father as payment. Back in the fall she brought me 8 moose legs to trade for another bow. I took them apart for the skin, sinew and marrow in the kitchen, my roomates are very tolerant people.
This is a red oak board, not too great grain with ok density, backed with unbleached linen cloth. It is 66" long, 30lbs at 28" of draw and 1¼" at its widest. The board had just under a quarter inch of deflex, the best looking grain being on that side. Ended up with a total of 1 inch of set for about 1¼" of string follow just after unbracing. The backing strip cuts off about 7 inches from the tips which are overlayed with pau ferro wood. Handle is moulded leather (what a pain) with a built up arrow rest and copper strike plate. Finish is store bought lard, wood strongly burnished.

That is an excellent bow. tiller is text book. you have a knack for that red oak. good job
-
Very nice entry for Feb. BOM contest! 8)
Those tips are TINY!!! bet it shoots fast and with no handshock!
-
Tips would have been thinner if the backing was long enough. Probably thin enough not to get hand shock from flinging store bought carbon or fibreglass arrows.
-
Excellent bow, with perfect tiller! I didn't know Conan O'Brian was making bows though ;)
-
Man,i like that bow!

I charmed the linen off my mother who had bought it back in her hippy-ish days 30 odd years ago. Its grey, fairly thin and not too pretty when I glue it to wood (not the linen's fault). I've heard of guys getting linen canvas at art supply stores (most canvases are cotton these days though). I've tried specialty fabric stores and didn't find anything 100% linen.

i bet any type will help to keep it from blowing up, i might try dyeing the linen first, i made some dye out of osage chips, maybe that will work

hey, i understand about being scrawny! lol.
if your trying to get linen, definitely make sure it says linen. other wise it will be cotton. course you could use that as a backing as well. since its just to keep it from raising splinters, not draw weight, it would be cheaper to use cotton canvas instead of linen, though, not as traditonal.. i think
i have heavy canvas, dont remember the weight, that i used as a backing. works pretty good.

now that i think about it i might have some canvas that would work, or i could back with hemp by pulling the hemp twine i have apart, i tried it before and it seemed to work
