Well i thought it impossible but here it is! I bent the limbs a year ago and finally decided it was time to splice them together and force them to become a bow. :) 66" NtN, 45 lbs @ 28" 1 7/8ths inches wide tapering to 3/8th tips... Tip overlays are some scrap ipe pieces I found in a dusty corner of my shop. 5 coats of Tru Oil make up the finish. B-50 dacron for the handle wrap. It kept around 2 inches of the original 5 inches of tips in front of handle. (reflex?) This bow shoots pretty fast to me but I still can't get used to the little "tic" sound of my string leaving the limbs as I draw it. :-\ I also still need to silence my arrow pass with some felt or leather but I will get around to that in a few days. So whaddaya think of my first Recurve?? I always thought it couldn't be done wit Oak board and that is the reason I let this one sit for so long before attempting it but now I am contemplating my next red oak project. Say what you want to about red oak board bows, but I am here to tell ya... It makes a dang fine weapon! I love to work with it and don't consider it to just be a beginner wood. It's Good stuff. :) Thanks for looking! :)

Cool bow. Thats the first time I've seen an oak recurve.
-
I really like it. Very very cool. I'm getting ready to start my first recurve. I'm glad to see yours turned out so well AND with red oak! Sweet. Good work man!
-
Cool bow you mad there!
-
First red oak recurve I've seen. Excellent job! ;D
-
Very nice work Josh, beautiful finish work,Pictures are a little dark but not to dark for me to not be able to see that it is a very fine bow. :)

The full-draw pic looks really good! I'm impressed with what some of you guys are doing with RedOak.
-
Nice bow Josh! I've had trouble trying to recurve board bows like that in the past and kinda gave up on it. I think I've figured out a way to do it right now. Working on a technique for my bow trade, we'll see. Great job!
-
It's always amazing when you see a recurved red oak board bow. Always seems like it would be impossible to bend wood like that without breaking, very very nice job on those recurves, amazing.
-
Nice recurve Josh! Your tiller looks spot-on. How did you induce the curves? Dry heat, steam?
-
Looks great! I'm working on my first recurved red oak board bow in between other projects right now, so it is very comforting to see someone else's success!
-
thanks guys! I steamed the curves in using a big pot and aluminum foil. I took some better pics today maybe you can actually see the bow in these, LOL.

Thanks Pappy! :)
Thanks Bevan!
-
excellent bow Josh. Great profile, great looking curves and the tiller is perfect. I've never worked oak but it looks great to work with. Congratulations
-
you should think about entering your bow in the BOM contest
-
Thanks Keenan. It doesn't even compare to some of your Yew beauties you produce...
Thanks wvarcher! ...I'll think about it. ;)
-
Oh just realized these full draws are a few inches short... Must've been an auto-timer miscalculation on my part... ;D
-
Beautiful Josh. I have had only two experiences with Red oak. One blew up ( too dry? ) and the other was a lower weight womens bow that was ok. It just goes to show ya that in the hands of a patient and skilled bowyer it will make a meat maker. Danny
-
Looks alot better in the daylight Josh! She is a sweet heart. :-*
-
Thanks Sidewinder! I don't know about "skilled bowyer" I mess up more than I make here lately it seems, LOL>
Thanks Tim! I didn't realize my pics were so dark until I already had them posted... Took some outside ones this morning before work... :)
-
Turned out real nice Josh ,like those curves and tillers real well done looks like a smooth shooter-Hammertime
-
I love the curves on this bow. Jim
-
damn nice recurve man . i need to come up there for some lessons. beautiful work !!
-
Thanks Hammertime! It shoots pretty smooth and has a very smooth draw. Seems to stay the same weight from about 15" to 28". ;)
Thank you Jim!
Thanks Ken. Don't sell yourself short on your own work brother, you make great bows and I could learn a thing or two from you as well. :)

I realize this is an OLD post, but I have to ask, ...with all the furvor over the upcoming Red Oak board bow trade, I'm posessed of a few questions:
- First, I'm wondering if this bow still survives?
- Have you any update on it's performance?
- Have you hunted with it?
- Any changes you'd make in how you built it if you were doing it again?
- Care to share any special tips and tricks for working with Red Oak?
-
still shoots exactly like it did when I made it. :) Still one of my favorite bows to target shoot with. I have shot a few 3D courses with it last summer and it still shoots great. I do all my hunting with a osage bow I backed with copperheads a few years ago but I would definitely hunt with this one if it were a darker color. I made this one strictly as a target bow but I don't doubt it could take game if I wanted it to.
-
I dont recall seeing this one the first time around....
Good work.
Especially if it is still shooting pointy lil sticks.
-
it is an excellent bow! i really do think its a great example of what red oak is capable of. i plan on trying to replicate it, maybe ill get it right, maybe i wont, ill keep trying till i do.
-
This bow is really inspiring me as a model for the Red Oak Board Bow Trade. I'm thinking of boiling instead of steaming. Any advantage to steam over boiling?
-
I cant wait to see what people make in the board bow trade.
-
Missed it too - what a beauty!
-
Great looking curves very nice. 8)
