Does it make a difference in a feather cutting your hand when you cut the feathers final shape with scissors or burn it to final shape? Hope this makes sense thanks

Don't you like staining the arrow shafts with blood?? ;D
I trim the leading edge of the quill realy thin with a sharp knife and then glue the tips and sometimes wrap them down. Sometimes you need to turn the nock a bit so the fletching clears your hand better. I have less trouble with 4 fletch. Yesterday I stained a shaft pretty good though ::) ;D looked close at it and the start of the feather had some fletching glue soaked and dried into it.......nicked me pretty good. I have been using cut feathers not burned, I wouldn't think there'd be much difference there.

Josh, I wrap the forward end of all my fletching. This helps a lot. I also started using floppy rests on my bows and this alone would do the trick.
-
K thanks for the tips ill give them a try
-
I like to thin the quill down a bit and then bevel the sharp corner on the top side. I also bind the fletches, or at least get the front.

Like the others said. After I burn the feather to shape I then shave the leading edge of the quill as fine as possible and wrap with sinew then glue down. With this I can shoot off my finger with no bleeding.

C/Mon Pat...you aint no Fun...remember two Years ago at the Classic...I looked like I had been shot by the time the course was over...left hand will never be the same again...but I had some Purdy Dern Fletchin's.......... >:D..... :P
-
Mike, my skin has gotten so thin in the last few years it doesn't take much to break it. Since I first started using a floppy rest it hasn't happened. Still almost feels like shooting off my hand. ;D
-
I think I'm gonna have to try one of those floppy rests.
Darcy :)

I wear a leather glove with all the fingers cut off except the index and thumb.
-
I trim the leading edge like others and also roll it down with something round and hard like a screwdriver, then usually rap and glue but not always, the first thing I do is feel of the leading edge if someone gives me an arrow of theirs to shoot,if I feel any burs I don't shoot it. ;) ;D
been there done that and don't like it. :o

Pat, I hate to be so ignorant but just what is a floppy rest? I am so old a lot of my stuff is floppy but aint know about this.
Thanks.

Not the best looking floppy rest but its just a piece of leather that the arrow rests on
-
Thank you Elktracker. I will have one in about two hours.

No problem I have also used thicker leather for kids bow, I rip it down a little thinner where it attaches to the grip so it conforms to the shape of the wood look at the far right grip (sattle leather) floppy rest
-
Here is a "how to" for the Ferret's Floppy Rest.
-
thanks ill have to give that a try
-
Sorry for the double p ;Dost but it is good enough to post twice!
-
Thanks for the drawing. I made one earlier and wrapped it to the bow but it did not function cleanly. The folded shelf should do the trick.

I had the same problem shooting off the knuckle and I switched fletching. I shoot right handed, but prefer left wing feathers. When my arrows would go across my hand, it seemed like they were already trying to spin to the right, kind of trapped between my hand and the riser. I switched to left wing feathers and now they spin away from the riser and I haven't been cut since.
-
Thanks for all the info guys
madcrow I will try that now that you mention it the ones that cut me are right wing, I have some lefts ill try.

everything these guys said is true. only thing i can add is unless the quill is left thick there is no reason it should hit your hand. if it does it usually means you are plucking the string or your nocking point on the string is too low. a good clean loose and a slightly higher nock should fix the problem. peace
-
Plucking the string? I play guitar and mandolin so I know what plucking a string is but could you explain that to me please ;D I just let the string slide off my fingers as I pull through full draw?
-
plucking just means it isnt a clean loose. doesnt have to be from the string coming off your fingers. it could be because the hand isnt going straight back. this happens a lot if people use the bicep muscle to pull rather than the back muscles. peace

I used to have the same problem till I started stripping the feathers, this solved the problem and now I wrap the fletches in silk as well, looks a lot prettier too.
