Title: Six finished bows for under 75.00$
Post by: IndianGuy on April 05, 2011, 07:52:58 pm: Well I had some down time while I'm waiting for some sinew backed bows to dry and decided to go to the lumber yard and buy some sugar maple, I also bought some wood glue and some fiberglass board tape along with one can of sealer and once can of black spray paint. Total cost was 72.00 and some change. This is the result pictured.
6 finished bows of different designs ranging from 60" to 72" and weighing from 35# to 65#'s three are backed and 3 are not. I usually do not make this type of bow but get a wild hair occasionally.

Post by: IndianGuy on April 05, 2011, 08:05:16 pm: Boards are a far cry from a good osage satve but they are cheep and make a really nice shooting bow for the money. I sorted through about 100 boards to find 6. :D

Post by: NTProf on April 05, 2011, 08:10:41 pm: I prefer boards, even over a stave (osage or not). Especially boards of tropical woods will perform with (and last as long as) anything. Incredible, 6 bows for only $70. Can't beat that. If you were to buy 6 bows from a custom bowyer, I doubt that $70 would get you very far!

You could have done it a bit cheaper without the FG tape by using brown grocery bag paper for backing but what is $1.95 when divided by 6 bows! :D Well done!

Post by: Dvshunter on April 06, 2011, 03:22:38 am: Thats a bunch of fun there for not much jack. I did something similiar with some nefews of minemexcept we had hours and went with pvc pipe and paint. They still liked em, but those are much cooler. Thanks for the idea.

And I'm not claiming there is anything wrong with that, necessarily, but just pointing out how 'cost effective' your project was. ::)
